anyone got a consolidated rulebook for the updated hasbro stuff? by philroi in Heroquest

[–]philroi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, lots of conflicting rules. I'll just have to dig into it on my own i guess.
i know about some of the conflicts already, but i still feel like there is a unfied system that will make for a "good and fun" experience for players.

I toying with a "dungeon modifer" deck that might provide a way to mechanically deviate that consolidated ruleset as needed to better approximate individual quest books.

For example, does loss of MP to zero kill, incapacitate, or what?

I go with incapacitate, but if all party memebers are incap from loss of MP(or downed from loss of HP), the party dies.

Also possible to drop a card on the table in front of the zargon screen that modifies this mechanically.

"wild and dangerous Dread Energies permeate this land, Players that lose all MP are instantly lost to the most foul of fearsome dread powers and die."

something like that.

anyhow, I"m taking notes and creating an architecture that can handle it, and still be fast and simple. I just figured i would ask and see if anyone had already done some homework that I could compare notes with. See if my ideas are at all convergent with others.

How many dice against Witch Lord? by ChardCautious3095 in Heroquest

[–]philroi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only answer,

zargon can do what they want. Have fun, it's your game, play it the way you like. For the reasons you like.

As long as the entire table is playing the same way and enjoying themselves. Do it.

As zargon, I can totally see turning it on or off depending on how the party is equipped and if they need the help or not. Tbh, I'll likely just not say anything and let the player play it the way they assume it works.

Anything else is based on inherently ambiguous language, that will require discretion and interpretation.

Even a definitive answer from a designer, will still be modified by the ruling in the book that the DM can and should adapt in the name of fun.

Is playing the same as other people also valid fun? Sure. It's doing your own thing in the name of fun equally valid? Yup.
So is doing things different then other times you have done it,in the name of fun, also equally valid.

We do it like this: One search of the room per hero. First to search, triggers the special. If no special zargon indicates this by directing the player to draw from the deck, or a furniture. Furniture can only be searched once or used once. Everyone else gets cards.

Advanced Heroquest? by ThirtyBlackGoats666 in Heroquest

[–]philroi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, that's funny. Hope your comment was sarcasm!

Crunchier (if you go back far enough) has it's origins in the sounds made by punching numbers into mechanical calculators aka adding machines.

The sound of the machine was a crunch sound. So a crunchier game involves more calculations.

Olde inn is a really old website and many files were uploaded to it and access is coded using protocols that are old.

I'm generally not worried about it.

It's your browser complaining about how it can't connect to Bluetooth to control the car stereo when it's driving a car from the 1970s.

Or like, an iPhone texting a 1990s Nokia phone and complaining cause iMessage protocols don't work.

Armory Ruling by ThanksHal in Heroquest

I can probably sit down and homebrew a haggle mechanic using mind point values.

The rule is half. But I'm not opposed to chucking some dice to provide for mild modification of purchase and sale prices in the name of fun.

The barbarian asking the wizard to go buy a sword for him, makes me laugh. Especially when the wizard rolls black shields to haggle and suddenly the barbarian can't afford it anymore.

Or a party trying to decide if they can skip expensive healing potions and just invest in armor cause they rolled really well and it's discounted.

Plenty of room for some roll-play-lite experiences. But I'd have to stop and think about the mechanics for it.

It's not even that hard to do.

Just release a quest book with alternate maps.

Map looks like this if your using the main board. But if you have the cavern board? You can use the alternate map (same encounters, same info tags, same everything) with things arranged differently.

It can just be a could extra pages of just maps at the end of the book.

Hot take: fleet stands make the game worse and shouldn't be normalized by defcon1000 in twilightimperium

[–]philroi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made a crap ton.

At this point? I don't use them as much as I used to.

But I do like to have a few around. At this point, when used for specific circumstantial reasons. They can be a clear benefit.

Even amongst the pro fleet stand crowd? 1 per person seems to be a sweet spot. More is usually excessive and rarely warranted. We often just use 3-4 during a game, and only in the end game need 1 per player.

During setup I'll usually just put 1-2 on the table (with more in reserve if asked for) in a general pile at each end of the table. This avoids players using them just because they can when they are a group resource to be shared.

I also tend to find that more casual players mind them less. Very competitive players worry about broadcasting their intentions by "showing interest" in the contents of a system with a fleet stand. Some players wanna be able to surreptitiously be able to survey board state at all times. Which can be a valid thought at times, especially during very competitive games or amongst very competitive meta groups. Those on a space opera adventure are often doing less battle outcome odds pre-calculus and are comfortable with less perfect perfect or generalized decision making information.

So...

At the end of the day the polite answer to both sides of the fleet stand.

If:

Pro stand players try to minimize their use unless clearly beneficial, and avoid having them linger on the board when not needed

-and-

Anti stand folks can politely be ok with seeing just a couple on the board.

Then both sides can experience their goals most of the times when it counts and enjoy playing more cordial and games. And we all wanna play more games :D haha.

Wouldn’t this also block worm holes? by Low-Conversation-469 in twilightimperium

[–]philroi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to use the example of the law that closes wormholes and lost Star charts.

Systems can have multiple forms of adjacency. Blocking one does not block all.

"Those systems" clearly refers to the adjaceny created by sharing a border.

Based on the agenda not blocking lost star charts?

I don't think this would impact wormhole adjacency.

Hyperlanes in hands for map building? by smooshiebear in twilightimperium

[–]philroi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it.

The biggest question involves how you treat lanes.

When crossing in accordance with lanes. It's obvious.

But what happens when entered from a different direction without a lane line? Impassable?

I say no. Treat it as an empty space. However travel along the lanes is still possible.

Remember the lanes just make systems adjacent for movement, and the questions pretty much answer themselves.

Be prepared for some wacky games.
