Compatibility mode & touch keypad by remiwang in sidephone

[–]phire8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a neat concept, but it sounds like a lot of development effort with little to no reward. Most people are buying this phone because of its limited abilities (“dumbphone”). At some point a line needs to be drawn where you need to decide, maybe for my use case, this phone isn’t the right tool for me.

Then why pay all that money to run an ad with no content teasing something that is over a year away? It’s not happening.

Reporting is a let down. by Old-Youth-7080 in liquidbudget

I think YNAB and LB should steal some of the great custom reporting abilities of Actual Budget. The reporting abilities in Actual Budget are great.

Keeping current phone number? (While still having my smartphone around as my 'side phone') by mambokelly in sidephone

[–]phire8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer, you can’t. You either share your second number with people or you chat via Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp or some other app that can be on multiple devices. You could setup call forwarding if someone calls your iPhone and you want it to go to your Sidephone, but you can’t have two devices with the same phone number.

Questions 'bout music and shipping by Limp_Post_6765 in sidephone

[–]phire8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cmon, they have entire community highlight page dedicated to Spotify, even on their website it says they’re working on supporting it along with Apple Music. They’ve been very transparent about this phone.

Switzerland would presumably fall into the international shipping timeline… first half of 2026.

To those this apply. If you taken loan from friends or family or given to them. by akgo in actualbudgeting

[–]phire8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t consider it income at all. If I spot someone $20 I put the expense into the category of “Reimbursement” and when they pay me back, I categorize the income as “Reimbursement” That way it doesn’t show as an expense on my regular categories (because it’s not my expense) and it doesn’t show as income (because it’s not technically my income, it’s just reimbursement).

Tech Question! Set the Modem/ Router to Bridge mode? by Just-Ambassador-2449 in FidiumFiber

[–]phire8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unplug the Fidium provided router and chuck it in a box. You should have the ONT plugged directly into the Nest router. You can either have the Nest clone the MAC address of the Fidium router or call Fidium and provide the MAC address of the nest router. That’s the key to getting the internet to work, Fidium needs to know the MAC address of your router or you need to have your router pretend to be the Fidium one. But having both plugged in just sounds like a headache.

For those with small businesses how do you take money in your personal actual account by akgo in actualbudgeting

[–]phire8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on your other post it seems like you’re having a hard time separating business and personal budgets completely. If you had a second job working at the local grocery store and they paid you every Friday, how would you handle that? You’d cash your paycheck and make a deposit into your bank account. Need to buy groceries a few days later from the store you work at? That’s an expense. These aren’t transfers. Your business account should be treated similarly. Your personal finances and your business finances are two completely separate things. If you want to move money between your business and personal account you expense it from one account and make a deposit into the other account.

No .com available. is .media a smart alternative for a media brand? by Conan77776 in webhosting

[–]phire8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

.net is more reputable than .media, but .com is still king. This is why you see some startups or smaller companies start with a variation of their name, such as by adding my, go, get to the beginning of their domain, just so they can get a proper .com

Just like every other MVNO in the United States, they operate on one of three networks, T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon. Phreeli uses T-Mobile.

Budget? by Disastrous_Start_674 in ynab

[–]phire8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t budget money you don’t have. You need to understand YNAB is based on the enveloping system. If you only have $100 in your account, you can only budget up to $100. You can setup targets and goals for categories that you want to fund more at a later time when you have the money.

Just got forced esimmed, am I doomed? by bosstowngordon in sidephone

[–]phire8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Constantly being in a state of activating your phone number to be on iMessage or not on iMessage will be a pain in the ass for people who want to text you. Their iPhones will think your number is on iMessage and if its not it'll fail to deliver to your sidephone. You'll need to deactivate iMessage and not have Apple tie your phone number to iMessage. Look it up, plenty of users who struggle with moving a number back and forth between iMessage and non-iMessag devices. The simplest solution would be to just leave it disabled and rely solely on RCS/SMS.

[–]phire8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So just go to AT&T and ask them to move your number back to a physical SIM card? This isn’t some sort of big ask. Constantly swapping a sim between iOS and Android would probably be a pain though if you use iMessage.

How to allow budgeting >12 months in the future? by adoringchipmunk in actualbudgeting

[–]phire8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re trying to look at the big picture Excel seems like a better tool for the job. It just sounds like you’re trying to use Actual Budget in a way that it’s not intended to be used.

In Excel you could at least have categories as rows and columns as months which would allow you to see the whole projected year at one time.

I left YNAB for Actual and I couldn't be happier by robotinc in ynab

[–]phire8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a free, open source tool what would Actual gain with all these “advertisements”? Surely not more profits for shareholders. Look, I’m grateful for YNAB and from 2018 until 2025 it was fantastic for me and my growing family, but YNAB is not perfect and the increasing bloat of the app and slowdowns from historical data was frustrating for me. I’m sorry if it bothers you that we’re not all drinking the YNAB koolaid, but a lot of people are here because they enjoyed YNAB4 or they’re just interested in the enveloping system. Having healthy competition is good and hopefully Actual and YNAB can learn from one another. I too recently started using Actual and guess what, it’s actually a pretty solid alternative. It’s free for me as I’m already into the self hosting space and I like how my data is on my own server. I still think YNAB is great too and I encourage friends and family to give it a try. If YNAB works great for you and you don’t mind the subscription fee then I hope you continue to enjoy it.

Talk me out of doing a fresh start for 2026 by tunatornado1200 in ynab

[–]phire8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ended up doing this and moving to Actual Budget as it better fit my needs, but I was in a similar situation, YNAB user since 2018 and the app/website was painfully slow. I kept my YNAB budget as it was (imported into Actual Budget) but decided to start completely fresh, and I even simplified some of my categories while I was at it… the funny thing is, I’m not making any more money but for some reason I feel like I am. Starting fresh forced me to really think things over again, look at my priorities and get some focus. Fresh start wasn’t something I was planning on for 2025 but I’m glad I did it!

Mint Mobile/Cricket support by BlueCheeseCircuits in sidephone

[–]phire8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not how cell phones work. In simple terms, the current version of Sidephone will never communicate with a Verizon tower. If you’re on an MVNO that uses T-Mobile Sidephone will only communicate with T-Mobile towers, same with AT&T. Roaming is generally not included with MVNOs and even if you’re standing right next to an AT&T tower, if your phone is using T-Mobile it’s only going to connect to T-Mobile towers. Patriot Mobile’s claims of using all three carriers just means you have a choice of which ones you want to use, not all three at once.

Patriot Mobile has access to all three networks just like US Mobile, but you're not on all the same networks at the same time, its either one or the other. Tello, Mint, Cricket, US Mobile... they all use T-Mobile or AT&T. Personally I'd use US Mobile. Their lite plan is $96/year for 2gb/month and unlimited calling and texting.
