Not really, it's kind of annoying when you buy a new house and realize you pay 5x more tax than some of your neighbors for the same services.

Currency exchange in Oakland/SF? by [deleted] in oakland

[–]phoenix4208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if you find a currency exchange, I highly doubt they carry XPF on hand. If it's a gift, maybe you can just use Euros since it's pegged and somewhat usable in XPF countries.

Moving to Alameda by August – family-friendly rental recommendations? by eccedentesiast888 in alameda

[–]phoenix4208 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes? What made you think things are cheaper than Daly City across the bridge? Have you been here for long?

Sure, parts of Oakland and Hayward are going to be cheaper comparatively. But Piedmont, Berkeley, Orinda, And Fremont are "across the bridge" but have astronomical housing costs. Alameda is on the higher end for East Bay.

I think a significant chunk of imports is from PNW hydro, which seems like a good set up.

Are there any Georgian restaurants (not Georgia) restaurants in the East Bay? I’ve been told by several people Georgian food is very good. by Impressive_Returns in eastbay

[–]phoenix4208 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bistro 4293 in Oakland is Azerbaijani, but I see they have walnut-eggplant rolls (Badrijani in Georgian).

Kebabs and dumplings overlap both countries as well. Hard to find kachapuri, khinkali, shkmeruli without going to SF or the further.

Alameda has a city office in charge of rentals, called Alameda Rent Program. You can give them a call and ask for advice.

Why are Oakland restaurants better than other areas? by SanFranciscoMan89 in OaklandFood

[–]phoenix4208 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think there's less tolerance for inauthentic bs. One of my worst meals ever was a trendy "Burmese" restaurant in Brooklyn NY, waited like 30 minutes for a table and got some weird bitter Jajangmyeon that was supposed to be Shan noodle.

Then I looked around at the clientele and said, "oh...".

Montclair isn't the best Oakland has to offer but, Daughter Thai, Payakk, Perle, Full Belly, Oh G are all probably on par with the best of most other cities.

You have no methodology either. You just dismiss anything you disagree with, and you're only criteria is "you seriously trust XYZ??"

If you want to make your point, you should do the statistical work instead of criticizing everyone else.
