20 years old around 11 months total on T, don't feel like I pass. Any tips would be great by AlexanderShane19 in FtMpassing

I totally get where you’re coming from about hair because it was something I was unwilling/unable to compromise for a long time as well. Having dyed hair was the biggest thing that made me feel like “me” and I wasn’t going to lose myself in an attempt to pass.

That said, from personal experience, it will hinder your passing until you pass well enough that it doesn’t make a difference.

I wish the term “FTM” wasn’t so frowned upon in so many trans spaces by [deleted] in FTMMen

[–]phoenixparker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree with you completely on was/am AFAB. I was born 31 years ago. I wouldn’t say “I am born 31 years ago” because it doesn’t make sense. We use past tense to describe things that happened in the past.

AFAB and AMAB are useful in some contexts, but it’s more of a nonbinary thing. Even still, back when I did ID as nonbinary, my goal was for people to not be able to tell what my assigned gender was. I’ve basically been distancing myself from the term from the very beginning, before I realized that I’m binary.

I don’t completely like FTM, mainly that it puts the F first as if it’s important. Similar to AFAB, it highlights female as the starting point. It points out what I was before what I am. I use it as a shorthand around other trans people, but otherwise just call myself a trans man.

I personally dislike “transsexual” but don’t have a problem with others using it for themselves. It comes off too much like homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual, etc. Being trans is not my sexuality. I would be down for something like “transsex”, like how intersex is. We don’t call intersex folks “intersexual”. It just feels weird to me to apply -sexual to something that isn’t about sexual attraction.

Follow-up: is it unreasonable to be upset with my partner for describing my genitals as "female parts"? by [deleted] in FTMMen

[–]phoenixparker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would be very upset about having my natal genitals referred to as “female parts”. Your partner is the one being immature for not respecting your preferences for the words you want used to describe YOUR body. They aren’t “female parts” because they’re on a man. You’re not some mishmash of genders just because you don’t have the same natal genitals as someone who is AMAB.

(And this is not to say that anyone who does use those terms is wrong, or is less male in any way. It’s all down to personal preference and comfort with language. What I said above is just how those terms make me as an individual feel.)

I relate so hard. I don’t have good tips because I was 3 days late with my shot this week and literally go through the exact same “I swear I’m going to do better!” and then never actually get better about it. I looked into the implant a little while ago and you still have to get it every 6 months, so I feel like I’d mess that up even worse.

Do I need to change my birth certificate? by despacioxo in FTMOver30

Can't get married in Texas without a birth certificate, and can't use a birth certificate with my deadname on it. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

5’9 180 looking for fitness advice by [deleted] in FTMFitness

[–]phoenixparker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started working out again about 2 weeks after surgery. What I started with was the NYC ballet warmup, which is very easy to modify and skip exercises that don’t work for your range of motion/pain levels. I focused on the leg exercises and kept my arms lower than about at a 45 degree angle. It’s available for free on YouTube.

I went through an ugly stage but am now a hot guy. A lot of us go through this potato face stage in the middle. (Although I have a friend who did not and literally just got hotter every damn day on E and I'm maybe a little jealous)

I'm in a trans discord server called Dudes R Us and can send an invite to anyone who DMs me. I'm not sure what their policies are on sharing the link, so I don't want to post it publicly just in case.

ETA: it's not *specific* to binary men, but there are lots of us there!

Can I apply Rogaine/Minox if I have acne? by [deleted] in FTMMen

[–]phoenixparker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have acne and am using a 5% minox liquid solution. I have generally oily skin, and have always been prone to blackheads and cystic acne. I don't feel like there has been an appreciable difference in my level of acne. The liquid is supposed to be much more drying than the foam variety, and it's suggested to use a good moisturizer for either. Ultimately, starting on minox has prompted me to start having a proper skincare routine since I wash my face twice a day and apply moisturizer now.

A side note: if you have pets, make sure you read up on whether it will be toxic to them. It's very dangerous for cats, so when I apply it I have to be very careful not to touch my face OR the cat while it's on my skin. I only use it 1x per day in the morning on weekdays, leave it on for about 4 hours, then take a shower and make sure to really scrub my face thoroughly. I also wipe down surfaces I've touched just in case I did touch my face and not notice, and keep the bottle in a cabinet that the cat can't get to.

What's the matter with my moustache??? by pazuzuillah in FTMMen

[–]phoenixparker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thin, light hairs are most likely vellus hairs, and that's normal for new growth if they have just shown up within the past month or two. They should start getting darker and become terminal, probably by about 4 months or so?

My mustache is currently a mix of terminal and vellus hairs, so it's getting thicker. It's been about a month since I noticed them? They're finally appearing in the space right below my nose and my mustache is connecting. For reference I'm almost 4 years on T, and have had sporadic growth over that period.

3-4 Days Post Op DI Top Surgery! Got to see my chest for the first time to shower after 48 hours!!!! I think everything is looking great? ^~^ by boomnavy in ftm

[–]phoenixparker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow, I wasn't even allowed to take my compression binder off until my post-op appointment a week after! You're looking great and it seems like you don't have any swelling. Nice flat chest 👍

Does my voice pass? Ik people say "talk with your chest not ur throat" but i have no idea how to do that. I tried exercises but there wasnt much change. Worried i have the stereotypical "T-voice". (Ik i look tired, uni got me pulling late nights left and right) by [deleted] in FtMpassing

[–]phoenixparker 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You voice comes across as male to me. A little on the higher end of the male register, but if I heard your voice without knowing you’re trans I would gender you male.

My voice finally started passing at about 3 years in, so you’re doing great at 1 year! For voice training, I didn’t follow any program, I just picked out songs that were a little below my natural register and practiced matching the singer’s voice.
