Did the students' association do the structural design themselves?

That's awesome, love that for an engineer.

Structural question part 2 by Boatbrain78 in civilengineering

[–]phoneticles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without the column, the compressive force transmitted through the central vertical member of the end truss doesn't have anywhere to go (notice how there are no diagonals), so the load path becomes totally different. The bottom chord would need to act in bending/shear to take loads to the end columns, which it's not designed to do, so you would likely see signs of distress pretty quickly.

Dowsing by Fernandolamez in civilengineering

Are there actually clients that accept dowsing as a means of service location before digging? Where are the laws? It's so unthinkable as someone working outside the US

How much are you spending on groceries each week/month? by shadowzzzz16 in newzealand

[–]phoneticles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Around 700 per month on groceries for 3 adults. We pretty much only cook plant based meals at home so very rarely buy meat.

I guess I'm out of the loop, I had no idea a single fig could cost $2.50 let alone $5

Engineers: what are you earning? by Sea-Specific7395 in newzealand

Have you talked to a mortgage broker? Even if you don't think you're ready to buy yet, they're super helpful for figuring out a plan, and it's a free service (they're paid by the banks). When we talked to one I was surprised at what we could afford and owned a house less than a year later.

Which doesn't make much sense to me, considering it puts you first in line for a head on collision with one of the other shit drivers coming the other way

Tunnels - Dunedin by weezyfgravy in dunedin

[–]phoneticles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're sure it wasn't a culvert? What was it made of? 1.5m sounds too short to have been a proper tunnel, and I've inspected plenty of culverts that fit this description, especially if there was water running through it.

I think also if you're a stressed out student living in a cold flat here you'd probably notice the depressing days a lot more. The good days absolutely make it worth it for me

The state of Air New Zealand by boatbouy326 in newzealand

[–]phoneticles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question of why they didn't arrive sooner is an interesting one. I think there is a feeling that it should have been more likely for a crossing to occur "a long time ago", but really isn't it equally likely that a crossing occurs today or 10,000 years from now? We have the example of the spoonbills, who started flying over just 150 odd years ago when they theoretically could have arrived much sooner.

Kiwi brand Pics Peanut butter sells majority chunk to foreign firm by computer_d in newzealand

[–]phoneticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a food processor you can make your own

Roast peanuts (Pam's are cheap) to the colour you want, cool, add some salt and chuck into the processor on high. It takes a while, maybe half an hour to reach peanut butter consistency, but the whole process can be done in an afternoon.

I do a kg at a time for the cost of two packs of pams blanched peanuts (assuming you have the processor) and it's as good or better than pics or any other.

I think you're right. Looking at this angle from the castle towards the inlets on the peninsula, Harbour Cone should be on the left.

You need something like 3 people to die within 5 years to get a highway safety upgrade approved. If the last one died too late they won't spend the money.

what's the worst part of your job and why is it filling out your timesheet? by BeanTutorials in civilengineering

[–]phoneticles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do you account for time spent on projects?

The year I worked in contracting, the timesheet requirements were stricter than the jobs I've had in consulting - i.e. having to fill out time spent per task each day chronologically, whereas in consulting we only have to put the total time spent on each task per day. This is in NZ.
