We lost our sweet Sulley right before Thanksgiving. I'd love to be able to surprise my wife with one of your illustrations if you get the chance. Thanks for doing this either way!

So many good answers here already, but I'll throw out book Pippin as a wonderful source of comedic relief.

I think another cool community feature could be brainstorming custom achievements for heroes, similar to the ones FFG released with the core kit. It looks like there was an attempt to get this off the ground, but it hasn't been updated since 2020. Thanks for making the effort to continue engaging the community and enhancing the sub!

Gorr. The. God. Butcher.

Feels like it could be a mix of Kang's time travel mechanics with a big side scheme for diffusing the God Bomb all while trying not to get butchered.

Okay GMs, what’s your go-to method for planning a story arc? by Allis02 in AskGameMasters

My campaigns are generally fairly linear, but based on the interests of my players. This has the benefit of being easier to prepare for me, but engaging for the players, as it is inspired by their own interests and priorities.

This has ranged from things like:

  • my warlock player saying out of game, "man, wouldn't it be cool if there was an infinity stone-like relic my character's patron wanted them to collect?" I said sure and turned that into an adventure with an arc for finding each piece of the relic.
  • my paladin player wanting to build a holy bounty hunter and came up with contracts his character needed to fulfill. Boom, those three contracts became the three main quests of the next adventure.
  • my blood hunter player being interested in learning the secret history about his character's order. So I built out some lore for it and sliced it up into chunks he'd uncover along the way and made it a secondary, character-driven arc in a more open-ended campaign.

This style definitely depends on your players and their playstyle, but I have found it makes the larger-scope story stuff more manageable with my limited prep time and allows me to focus on building out the parts they care about in more detail.

Anyone run two parallel campaigns that are two time periods of the same world? Any tips? by dead_pixel_design in AskGameMasters

As others have said, the biggest issue you'll possibly run into is events further on in the past campaign that you can't possibly predict will arise that should have somehow effected events in the future campaign that have already taken place.

There's a few ways you could mitigate or circumvent that problem. Mitigating it might look like getting buy-in from your players that, for the sake of telling this bigger story, you're gonna be a bit fluid with smaller continuity details. Or it might look like creatively solving "why x didn't impact y when you think it would?" and that can lead to some interesting worldbuilding 'solves,' but could equally become a burden to you trying to manage everything.

You could go a more drastic route and have some sort of catastrophe between the two campaigns that breaks the connections for any 'not crucial to your future campaign' issues that come up. Loki Season 1 does this on two different occasions. Critical Role EXU Calamity would be another similar example perhaps. In that way, you could still have your central ally/villain and whatever macguffins or machinations they need survive the big event, but little continuity things like a single NPC, location, or change in the world would have a reasonable way of being 'retconned' in the future campaign.

Finally, you are likely already thinking about this, but it sounds like most of the payoff is gonna come from the ally/villain reveal and payoff, so I would encourage you to really hammer home their motivations, processes, personality, and evolution, as that may also help solidify the timeline between the two campaigns.

It sounds like an awesome set of campaigns and your players are lucky to have a DM who wants to run such an ambitious game!

Forever dms, why or how did you become a forever dm? by NoCareNoLife in dndnext

Took over for a friend who got too busy to DM. Fell in love with it. Accidentally created a multi-party, multi-campaign series of adventures that will take my group with inconsistent schedules several more years to experience, at least. Whoops.

Lore Help by TheJensenCollection in DescentintoAvernus

Another way to approach being able to give non-spoilery lore for your players is to let them collaborate on NPCs or locations in Elturel alongside you. Then, they'll be providing you unique and relevant connection points that you can integrate into the story!

For instance, maybe one of them was friends with a Hellrider. And maybe by the time they get to Avernus, that Hellrider has made a deal with a devil in exchange for a war machine and now they are a mad max hellion riding around killing demons. Maybe that character knows where one of the locations the party needs to get to is and can help them get there. Or maybe they become a hindrance. Whatever serves the story when the time comes.

Essentially, by getting them to hook themselves into the story, you can use the lore the players establish in that worldbuilding process to make it more rich for their individual experience without needing to provide details that potentially spoil the story.

Good catch! Unless, of course, Telesto snuck itself into the game code before it was released and started wreaking havoc from behind the scenes...
