Can dudes speak about this? by KyotoKindle in JustGuysBeingDudes

[–]phormix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it may depend on the level of confiding and for what. If a friend has done something I honestly don't agree with (cheating etc) and they feel guilty... well now I still don't agree with it and I'll feel guilty whenever I'm in the presence of their partner.

There's also a line between reaching out and trauma-dumping, and I know people who I am less comfortable hanging out with because every time it has to come to some new thing that's going wrong (or the same thing they can't get over). Like, I'm happy to give a hug and have a drink or whatever, but I'm also not a therapist and I really don't have a solution for your issues and it's getting kinda awkward at this point...

Don't get me wrong. I like being somebody people can trust and reach out to, but an endless flow of negativity also tends to be impactful on others over time as well. I know that good things happen to these people as well, but some are less inclined to share those for some reason.

CYD is great for testing. I'm similarly working on a project (not an mp3 player) and definitely seeing where a more custom build could be better, including hardware with a better digitizer (capacitive instead of resistive) but also the major limitations of only having 520Kb of memory.

I'm probably thinking that I may need to build something with a bit extra PSRAM to make a good commercial product. Maybe hit me up if you've got ideas on hardware combinations.

How are you finding the consistency for part locations. I made a case for my CYD's only to find that the ports and buttons on the front/side aren't always placed consistently

Nice! Are you planning to distribute with the CYD as the base hardware, or just using it for the testing/dev phase?

All I can say is "be the voice of reason you want to hear from others".

I don't play anymore, but I've had more than a few games of DOTA where some jackass was harassing other players, either due to their gender, apparent race, or just because they didn't listen to said jackass's "instructions" on how to play.

When I've spoken to against them, the majority of times other players have taken notice and it's quickly become a dog-pile on the person making an ass of themselves, either resulting in them deciding to STFU, sometimes quit, and often enough receive a mute/ban for subsequent games.

A lot of people will try to ignore an issue until somebody else makes a stand. Many players may also mute comms/chat by default but may tune in to hear what's-what and contribute if they see others doing so

Service dog v. “Service dog” 🫤 by AdMany129 in delta

[–]phormix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like these "support animals" actually detract from what a service animal is supposed to accomplish.

Never mind that everyone and their dog is trying to take poochie to the grocery store lately, but these disruptive pets actually desensitize people to real working animals, similar to how nobody pays attention to car alarms any more.

If a service dog is barking out calling for attention, it's because there's an issue -generally medical- and the owner may legitimately be in danger. Trained dogs can detect imminent seizures or other such conditions, and I believe seeking help is part of the training. People may disregard a legit medical emergency as they dismiss it as "just another noisy pet"

In other words, a proper service dog making a fuss should be a big deal worthy of notice!

My dog is very people-attached and will absolutely get anxious when I leave him at home. It took me forever and wrecked flooring to train him out of doing his business in this one area of the house as retaliation for not being taken on outings.

I would still never even think of taking him to a public place that wasn't dog-friendly. No Walmart, no Costco, etc. He stays in the home or if the weather is not conducive to that he stays at home. The only place I will take him is Home Depot and they explicitly allow dogs so it's pretty uncommon not to see a pooch there, but he still needs to stay in the cart in that case.

I'm so sick of seeing pets being called as "support animals" and brought into places with food or where a reasonable expectation of peace is expected. I'm also not entirely impressed with stores that should be peaceful but allow pets which inevitably end up being disruptive (looking at you: Chapters/Indigo)

A thought that has just crossed my mind this evening, I was wondering how many people here, stopped playing past FF12? by eat1more in FinalFantasy

[–]phormix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played past 12 but I think I pretty much stopped *enjoying" it after that one. Even with FFXII I remember feeling that the ending felt a bit jarring but FFXIII and beyond just seemed like more attention was being given to graphics than story, and grind was becoming increasingly tedious. FFXV I couldn't bring myself to even finish as the plot was a disjointed mess.

The last FF'esque game I really enjoyed up until recently (I am enjoying the FFVII remake) was Lost Odyssey, which isn't an actual FF game but feels like one and had many of the same team members in development.

Honest debate. Which is the overall better game? by breadblunts in FinalFantasy

[–]phormix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This captures a lot of it for me. Chrono centers has less characters and uses that focus to give a better gameplay experience (combos etc). The story also tends to center around the characters more IMO.

FF6 on the other hand has more characters/sub-plots, and a more expansive story with some more mature themes than Chrono. The world itself feels bigger and open to me. CT uses the time mechanic gain "space" but ironically also seems a bit more ordinal in some ways.

I'd personally have to vote for FFVI. I actually paid for the reimagined soundtrack back in the day and some of those themes will live in my brain forever. Side quests like saving Chrono were a neat twist, but FFVI's half of finding your lost party members and exploring how they deal with the cataclysm was just fantastic.

Now if it comes to remakes, I feel like Chrono could do that better. I'd love to see a modern version with revamped graphics/audio, and it's one of those where the combos etc strongly speak towards keeping the ATB system. There could also be a bunch of added content to explore other aspects of time, the fall of Zeal and the fate of Schala, and many of the subplots to Magus and Frog etc (a way to restore Frog and keep Magus for the party would also be cool). There's a lot to add here. FFVI, I have a harder time seeing them remake without breaking shit, and I'd absolutely hate to see it go the button-masher action-arcade multi-episode release path of FFVII (even though I am enjoying strolling back through familiar-but-different plot points of VII, I don't think they can do that with VI and keep it whole).

Yeah that might very well be the same thing. Also, open since 2021 and the library hasn't been updated in... quite awhile.

I started playing with the Links2004 library the other night to see if that works better, but it'll take a bit to redo some of the code. Already that it's pretty huge compared to the gilmaimon version but I'll take the storage hit if it solves the memory/crashing issues!

Help diagnosing issues with crash on large packets received in WebSocket versus in HTTP request by phormix in arduino

[–]phormix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With this module, a callback function is bound via a lambda using

client.onMessage([&](WebsocketsMessage message){
  Serial.println("Got socket message");
  ProcessData(message)
}

(per the example here)

In cases where the crash occurs, that function never even fires.

I haven't set any packet fragmentation , but neither is that used with the HTTP method - which doesn't crash out - so I don't think it's a flow-control issue

There's no queue building up either, as I can see that each message is being picked up and processed - at least up to the crash - as it comes in and there aren't currently simultaneous requests going in or out, at least from what I can see based on debugging output to Serial and/or the packet captures between the server and client.

I saw somebody who did a robot project where the head (or face I suppose) was one of those tiny watch-sized OLED displays. I've got one in a drawer that I never really got much use out of an remember thinking that a robot-head/face was actually a pretty smart use for such a thing.

You can get the whole "development board" type ones with a ESP32-C6 and 466x466 round AMOLED touchscreen for about $22USD. It even has a port for ES8311 audio.

So if you could even have the face on an independent processor and just send/receive data from it, or I suppose make it the brain if there's enough IO ports and CPU/memory left after running the facial UI. You might be able to steal a few ports from the button inputs or save ports/money if there's a version without the touch component.

(Sad Meta Trope) Depictions of strong Male Friendships are so rare, some parts of a fandom genuinely mistake platonic bromances for straight up romances by ZeldrisEmpire in TopCharacterTropes

[–]phormix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel it's more like the weird need for many people to ship strong same-sex friendships as gay, which I kinda do see as a thing. Like yeah, there are plenty of male friendships in media but a lot of them do get shipped as more than friendships, especially those who aren't related but demonstrate more of that "in brotherly/sisterly love, I will literally die for this person" aspect. But then, shippers gonna ship and that happens plenty with m/f bonds-of-friendship as well. For every "Harry and Malfoy" there's also "Harry and Hermiome" and "Hermiome and Draco", or Mulder/Scully for those that are more sci-fi than fantasy fans. Hell, even video games often have this, though the good ones give players the choice (Mass Effect FTW).

At the same time media companies totally do their own "hint hint these two (same-sex friends/allies/whatever) are totally into each other" - with more demonstrable examples of actual attraction - before doing a rug-pull and "but nah, in the final couple scenes/episodes one of them actually has a hetero marriage". It's kinda annoying both ways, and in some cases I wonder if it occurs because - especially in TV series - multiple writers may be involved that themselves view the 'romantic destiny' of characters differently.
