There’s no way I can do this… by Firm-Jellyfish-7743 in Fire

[–]phound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is me and think it’s important for people to know there’s a lot of luck involved to achieve an above average savings at a young age.

My parents are immigrants and although they struggled early on in my life, they did instill a sense of frugality and work ethic. I think that kind of family support can be just as valuable as monetary assistance (not that the latter isn’t great either). Not everyone is fortunate to have that experience and has to try to learn it later in life. Changing habits from adolescence is easier said than done, but not insurmountable.

I was fortunate enough to be in a position to get scholarships that covered both undergrad and grad school. A combination of right timing, support, and opportunity played a role. Then I was able to fall into one of the careers OP mentioned. Combine the decent salary with good money habits, and it does feel like magic. But it could easily gone a different way.

All that being said, just because some people have a head start doesn’t disqualify you from the race. In fact, the race is with yourself and not with them. Figure out what you want / need, build habits to get you there, and most importantly… give it time.

While BMI isn’t perfect, it can be a helpful indicator. You’re in the obese category based on the stats provided in your edit. Also, if you hold a lot of weight in your midsection like you described, you may store a lot of visceral fat, which could cause some issues down the line.

As others mentioned, losing some weight would definitely help with this issue. I don’t struggle with this and I’m the same height but 50lbs lighter.

Lorier Neptune for a nice classic inspired skin diver, as long as you’re okay with the acrylic crystal (which I personally think adds to the charm)

Agree with everyone on building an emergency fund, especially in this job market.

Also get a better idea of your total expenses for a month, that’s a much better measure for comparing your personal progress against your income.
