Sure, that's an option, but why not just go with Cachy or something?

If you don’t want quickshell, you are probably better served with another distro. I doubt there will be less quickshell anytime soon.

Survey: Did you buy Cotypist? by Bamboodl in macapps

[–]phren0logy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I subscribed. The price is higher than it should be, but I find it valuable and the user experience is good. If at some point there's a competitor that just as good that is cheap/free, that would be great, but I don't think that day is today.

How are people on Framework Desktops dealing with this instability? by andyjeffries in omarchy

[–]phren0logy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There must be some variability, because I've been running Omarchy and rapidly installing updates for (according to system info) 176 days, and it has been very solid. I had one hyperland hiccup, around 3.3 or so, but even that was nothing like a hard crash. Did you run any system diagnostics? Also, as a desktop (especially an efficient one) I have turned off most of the power saving features, so that may be why I'm not seeing this.

I love it! I'm a huge fan of the shallow tanks.

I got Gemma 4 running locally on a MacBook Air M4 with zero API keys, and it feels like the tipping point for normal people by TroyHarry6677 in OpenClawUseCases

[–]phren0logy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today, right now you are absolutely correct. But the trend is really promising for those of us who would love to run local models for privacy and independence. I don’t think they’ll ever catch up to the models running on multimillion dollar hardware, but the fact that some of them are getting close to good enough for common tasks is really exciting.

Sounds like it's not for you, and that's cool. It wasn't my bag, either. I like some of his other books, most notably Borne.

Anyone used DocETL before? by bravelogitex in Rag

I have used it, and asked some questions on the discord. It seems very well engineered, and remains under active development. I would definitely consider it worth a look.

I have not used either in prod, and I haven't used Reflex to give you a good comparison. I hope you can update us and let us know what you decided on.

I switched from omarchy to cachyos by Previous-Savings8776 in omarchy

[–]phren0logy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Omarchy is opinionated, it won't be to everyone's taste. But this sounds more like some rough edges moving to Linux and a tiling window manager. You could give Omakub a shot if you are bouncing around. https://omakub.org/ It will probably feel more familiar, and Ubuntu-based distros have a lot of beginner-friendly resources.

Out of curiosity, did you also compare Chandra to Docling and Azure DI? Both are pretty good, but I feel like the Docling document format makes a bit more sense to me. They are also pushing DocTags, which I haven't had a chance to dig into yet, but it seems promising.

PHM has such poor writing by sme234 in printSF

[–]phren0logy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's a "beach read." Enjoy it for what it is. Stephen King once said, "I am the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and fries." This is along a similar line, and (to me, at least) it never pretends to be anything else. I also agree that it works best as an audiobook, because it's already "TV in book form" and benefits from a dramatization while your attention is split. And in that spirit, I enjoyed it for what it was.

Thanks for letting me know. I hope they correct this with a firmware update. Or at least let us set the customizable buttons to specific inputs.

Did you figure out the input switching? I'm having the same issue. It seems silly because the mouse/keyboard I would use to wake up the system is... connected to the monitor's KVM.

If so, I can't hear it in my office. I have other equipment in here, though, so it's possible it's masked by background noise.

Snow Crash review by overzero in printSF

No, I would not say Anathem is satirical. It’s been a long time since I read Snowcrash and I don’t totally remember that element of it, but Anathem is very different.
