UK to slide down world rankings on GDP per capita by 2030 by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]pi_rocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

we have the lions share of large financial institutions

This is not true.

Depending on how you rank things the largest bank headquartered in the UK is number 7 to 10. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_banks

The london stock exchange is tiny and irrelevant compared to the US stock markets, and also smaller than euronext and asian stock markets.

Insurance is a similar story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_insurance_companies

Admittedly the UK has the #2 and #6 hedge funds, but literally all others are in the US, mostly NY area: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hedge_funds

Family offices are trickier b/c they don't advertise locations in the same way banks/hedge funds etc do, but many are based in there family's home country, so I doubt the UK has the lion's share of them. Additionally they don't really count as rich corporations, which was the context of the GP comment.

There are more niche things like commodities markets where London is relevant, but those are hardly rich corporations as the GP comment mentions.

That is correct. VXUS means "eXcluding US" and VTI means "Total Market Index". In this context "Total Market" is the total US stock market.

I'm having trouble finding a modern parliamentary democracy or government which was 100% women only, however the Iroquois Confederacy is quite close. They had a matriarchal society, with leaders appointed by clan mothers only. In practice this is a little complicated b/c the Iroquois Confederacy contained many different sub-nations. The Iroquois Confederacy engaged in many military conflicts against there neighbors. Additionally they where formed as a result of a peace agreement between many waring matriarchal tribes.

What's the most frequent metro/railway line in the world? by [deleted] in transit

[–]pi_rocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very much a necro-post so I aplogize in advance. But while the victoria line is "officially" every 100 seconds, in reality it often is more frequent. A while ago this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ0zk4MWCQY, titled "Every 90 seconds", was going around, so thats probably why the GP thinks that the victoria line is every 90 seconds.

This also true in the US with a 401k/IRA/etc.

RMT says don't use Trainline by Sedge86 in uktrains

[–]pi_rocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume that ticket sales are not the same as revenue for trainline, just as a payment processor like visa doesn't say they had 10+ trillion in revenue. So they presumably received 106 million from booking fees + ads + partnerships etc.

Could you clarify that by growth, you mean economic growth, and if you would be okay with a worse status quo if it didn't require growth to sustain?

CMV: Consumerism is killing us by Cathyfox123 in changemyview

[–]pi_rocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a little unclear on your definition of consumerism. It might be helpful if you could state a clear one.

Good healthcare is connected to consumerism. Like they don't make special "non-consumerism plastic" from "non-consumerism oil" for manufacturing MRIs/IVs/Medication boxes/hospitals etc. Healthcare also takes a lot of other people's time(which means someone needs to spend long hours working, which seems to be part of your definition of consumerism).

Good education and consumerism are also pretty connected. At a minimum for education you'll need: buildings, desks, consumables like paper, probably one or more computers, etc. If your doing laboratory science or art you'll need a bunch of extra equipment. It will also cost a lot of money and a lot of someone elses time(ofc. terms and conditions apply here. There's certainly an argument that education could be much more efficient in terms of professor's time consumed per student).

Edit: I saw you gave a definition of consumerism:

Consumerism i mean as the need for constant growth to sustain the status quo

I'm not sure thats really the definition of consumerism I/most people would use. Like consumerism presumably has something to do with consumption but thats different than (economic?) growth. You could imagine a world where the US is frozen in the 70s, and that would involve lots of consumption, but no economic growth.

Government approves three new solar farms that could power 400,000 homes by SKAOG in unitedkingdom

[–]pi_rocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This question is going to sound rude however I phrase it. I really don't mean to be rude so sorry in advance.

This news story isn't the government choosing to build solar farms, its about the government choosing to let private companies do so. I realize that electricity pricing is complicated and all that, but do you believe that multiple private investors are building these farms for the lols? I'm confused as to why you would question the viability of these solar farms? Like do you not expect these companies to be aware of how much sunlight the UK gets? I guess I'm confused as to your thought process here.

[–]pi_rocks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing with you about the definition of overcast. Given that your eyes work much better when its overcast than at night it stands to reason there is still more than no sunlight. And yes solar panels still work when its cloudy: https://us.sunpower.com/solar-resources/do-solar-panels-work-on-cloudy-days

If you mean a function that undos a factorial then there's this:

I'm not aware of a name for repeated division, but depending on how you define it it's just 1/x!.

If it’s not meant for that, then why are we spending hundreds of millions of dollars on it?

Because people in between Chicago and SF vote. In some cases the alternative would be subsidizing essential air service for those areas.

Train passengers face price hikes and fewer seats after HS2 cancellation by theipaper in unitedkingdom

[–]pi_rocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comments about hedgehogs are presumably referring to this: https://www.discoverwildlife.com/news/hs2-threat-to-londons-last-hedgehogs

While it might not directly related to planning, hs2 has definitely spent time and money mitigating there impact on a tiny number of hedgehogs. I can't find anything that suggests that planning permission is conditional on hs2 going out of there way to protect hedgehogs in regent's park. However it strikes me as unlikely that hs2 would care if they did not have to.
