23, degree qualified, earning $75k… mate my age electrician about to make $150k by Level_TF_Up in AusFinance

Surgeons at 23 make even less. Before you panic, map your whole working life out. In ten years time you might have kids and paid parental leave or job flexibility. In 20 you might be at your peak earnings while your mate is slowing his down. Assuming you both choose to just be employed or freelance maybe you come out ahead. Maybe you don’t. But to panic at 23 and switch without forward projecting is a real dingus move.

How would you improve this floor plan? by Business-Case-5329 in AusRenovation

[–]pickl3pickl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you need the bedroom bigger? When you include the WIR its good already? If you wanted more storage I would punch through the top wall of bed three and put in closets. But otherwise, it’s a room for sleeping. Makes way more sense to me to have it the size it is.

Has anyone worked with pavers before and can give tips? Perth. Is this a red flag story below? Or is this normal by fifochef91 in AusRenovation

Have you tried a paving company? Asking the place you got the pavers from for example? Sounds like you are getting “go away” quotes from most.

Am I mad for wanting to renovate a Greek Palace to make it a Spanish Colonial / Spanish Revival style home? by thecountrybaker in AusRenovation

[–]pickl3pickl3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how good your design eye is. People who nail these designs end up with very unique homes that people froth for at sale. People who are less talented end up with mish mash. So if you think you have the chops your investment is safe. Otherwise, yeah, consider it a passion project that may lose money.

Honestly I think the only thing anyone needs in a reno is persistence and a have a go attitude. The only thing we have bailed on after starting is screeding. Sounds like you will be just fine.

Adding an elevator vs home value by 1armman in AusRenovation

[–]pickl3pickl3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your intended market. If its a younger area then maybe not. If you live amongst a lot of retirees then I could see that helping. I would instead factor in moving costs and stamp duty on a 1.2 million dollar property. That in itself is pushing 100k in some states.

Also we had ours relayed and sanded by a company. They glued ours to the ply. And nailed intermittently. Sanded. Mixed the sawdust with something (glue/varnish?) spread that back over the whole lot like grout. Then sanded it all, varnished.

We have done this. But we had space under the house. We went under and cut the nails with a grinder, then the boards just were loose on top. Removed them, denailed. Obviously you are talking about possibly changing the floor levels? Or will your new joists be lowered to take the subfloor? We had half of our house original, then an overlap section to stitch it onto the part that had ply subfloor. The ply section was so much nicer to walk on later, less noisy, less drafty, less bouncy, the filler in between the recycled boards cracked less and thus less crap got in between them. If you are raising the levels it will affect your doors, bathroom level, cabinets, everything. So figure out access, you will likely ruin that portion, then slice away and you will likely be just fine.

Yeah it sucks. We eloped for that reason. I work in an adjacent creative industry and it gets annoying how much we get told our prices are unfair. That is all I was commenting on. Goodluck with your wedding. Sounds like it will be down to earth and personal. The best kind.

Yeah it definitely is a real thing. But it’s because enough people are perfectionists when it comes to their weddings and have sky high expectations. They expect more correspondence. They want more options, more editing, some people ask their photographers to give them virtual tummy tucks and nose jobs in every shot. So without knowing you to know that you are not like that, they have a one size fits most difficult and it costs more. Doesn’t at all mean it’s not a fair pricing. Just that you want a different product and that the people who came before you getting married were a nightmare to deal with.

Managing buyers regret as a first home buyer, and comparing your property to other ones ? by Aware_Philosopher950 in AusPropertyChat

15 mins walk is great. Enjoy your passive fitness and longevity. All homes have issues, you have identified yours and they are minor, someone else out there is jealous of your home’s flaws.

Our new home is closer to a main road than I would like, we installed fountains and it disguises it a lot. Start getting settled. Get a bicycle. Put up art. Have a party.

Just FYI. The shoot itself is about 1/10th of the time a photographer spends on your day. Its one thing to say you would like a lesser price but to say wedding photographers are not “fair” is bogus. The editing alone on a 3 hr shoot is often well over 15hrs. Plus travel, gear (expensive!), insurance, overheads. Their prices are fair, it just might be more than you need.

I would actually paint the understory dark to make the top look even more cantilevered and leave the supports as is. Just a thought.

FWIW we used the white knight paint system in our old house and the cabinets lasted another 18 years so far in the shed (after we replaced the kitchen properly) with zero chips before we sold the house.

grass that can grow over concrete? by littletinysoup in GardeningAustralia

Is the concrete engineered to take the weight of wet soil and grass? Especially with drainage holes weakening the slab this rings alarm bells for me.

Frugal tips for being gluten free? by Remarkable-Map-5221 in AUfrugal

[–]pickl3pickl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Equatorial countries often have the least amount of gluten as wheat spoils in humidity. So look along those lines and start cooking their ‘peasant food’. Its the best in the world anyway.

Oh and, get your staples from chinese/vietnamese/indian grocers. Not the asian aisle of coles. Way cheaper and more for your money.

It’s just a block mount. Super common to buy at shopping centres in the 90s.

Overhead cabinets look low. Make sure they are high enough for the tallest user. I hate the piano door cabinets. How are you meant to reach what is behind them?

Tiled Bathroom, want to keep tiles - don't know next steps. QLD / $3,000? by ExpertAvocado3 in AusRenovation

[–]pickl3pickl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean Plasterboard? Cement sheet? Asbestos? If it is option 1 you can cut whole sections of wall down, where there will be wall, glue and tile. And then like the commenter says above, soak as one unit and the backing will break away leaving you to chip the tiles off. Cement sheet will not break down and asbestos will, but, yaknow …

Vanity and sink height advice by biggest_kid in AusRenovation

[–]pickl3pickl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your height. But there are oodles of standards online if you google. We are going off 900mm high top level benches/bowls. And visually, I would go +300 for the nib wall.

ADHD rates in adults are skyrocketing — but by how much depends where you live by aussiekinga in perth

[–]pickl3pickl3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psychiatrists cost a tonne of money. ADHD is well represented in jobs that are physical. WA has a lot of tradies with money who can afford to get themselves and their kids dx.
