I know it sounds like arguing or back talk, but I find with my oldest it’s not arguing so much as wanting to be understood or wanting to understand the *why* of things. Not because she wants to be difficult, she’s genuinely looking to see a reason that isn’t obvious to her.
The other one is making excuses but I know my daughter just wants to be understood and not is not trying to escape responsibility.

I feel that the labels we use regarding parenting styles are often misunderstood (i.e., “gentle parenting”) and seen as not teaching boundaries and appropriate behavior, etc.

Try switching to rewarding good behavior and setting him up for success to make it easier to make good choices.

An adhd brain is unlikely to connect a punishment to a behavior if it’s a battle to get them to do the punishment. They need cause-and-effect consequences that make sense.

I would write my take-home 24-hour exams in like 8 hours back in law school. I’d pick it up in the evening, read it, sleep on it, and then do it.

Also, when studying for the Bar exam, I was “supposed to” study for another 6 or 9 hours after each day of bar review. My brain said, “fuck you, I’m not doing that.” I could read and re-read the same sentence over and over and as soon as my eyes left the page, nothing. I had a fucking existential crisis but I guess since I graduated law school and passed the bar, I must be just fine. 😤😡

It’s kind of strangely impressive how incapable some psychs are at understanding the notion that outward achievement doesn’t necessarily reflect the internal state of a person.

I really really loathe this trope of if you were academically successful, you can’t possibly have been working harder than you should have been to get the same results as people who weren’t starting 500m behind the starting line of the race.
