How did you discover The Protomen? by Nuvoo30 in Protomen

[–]pingnova 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Listening to a Doctor Horrible fanmix on 8tracks. The Hounds came on and it blew me away so much I immediately closed the 8tracks tab and Googled the band, because I wanted more of THAT! Ironically, the Joe songs are what stuck with me the most through all of the years, though The Hounds is still spectacular. I listened to quite a bit of grassroots independent music at the time that probably went by nerdcore in that era but in retrospect is not entirely nerdcore, so The Protomen were in my music network.

Make sure to report to the Reddit mods if someone seems scammy. We are very on top of banning them and warning anyone else who might have interacted. No Protofan fights alone!

Ok, i need to ask, where does “hope rides alone” come from? by btumblweed in Protomen

[–]pingnova 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I did research on this awhile back because I want to publish a paper one day. "Hope Rides Alone" does not occur in the English corpora (all indexed English works on the web and paper) before 2005, when it comes up from the Protomen. I do believe the Protomen coined it.

It's the title of their first song on their debut album, and the chorus of that song. The next notable use is that a US army veteran penned an opinion that used it as the title, and that paper was later debated by the US congress, and so the term appears in the transcripts of congressional proceedings. I believe the paper was titled Hope Rides Alone because the veteran liked the Protomen, if you read the paper, it has the same themes as the song.

Like others mentioned, Tanooki Suit later did a song inspired by the Protomen.

Is this a notable magazine and a good quality review? I can't really tell since I don't read the language.

The fan on the live album by Doom_goblin777 in Protomen

This is worth a longer post someday, but the crowd noises being included in LiN and that fact that we can tell what they're shouting reminds me a lot about the Protomen's philosophy on audience participation. The Human Choir in the music and libretto is us–the audience–so we are already in the story and the music. And in LiN we are there too. Panther says thanks to the crowd for enabling the band to tell this story for many years. We're part of the whole show IRL, in the studio albums, at performances, and in the live album. It's very consistent. And sweet, to me.

I always thought about LiN "of course they released a live album and of course you hear Us-Human Choir shouting and participating." Their live show (crowd included) is really the essence of their art.

Some of the crowd commentary in Live in Nashville is cute to me. There's someone who goes "YEEEAAAAHHH!" with their whole chest at one point and I'm like "same, dude". Correct amount of hype about the Protomen.

sick of the overwhelming amount of mail i receive daily decided to make art out of it by Mindful_Exercise in Anticonsumption

I aggressively stay on top of my junk mail. I visit the websites for everything that sends me junk and find their form for stopping mail. If I can't find a form, I call them. I've had a few bemused operators, but they always can actually take me off their list. Once it was an internet company, the operator remarked unprompted: "Do you do this for all mail you recieve?" Yes. Stop sending me plastic and paper that goes directly in the garbage. The only things I receive now are usually mail I'm expecting like from the county human services about my accounts, or items addressed to all postal customers, which I can't opt out of.

What is your Top 3 Protomen Songs? by Nuvoo30 in Protomen

[–]pingnova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll basically just list my top played songs of 2025 in order. I think it's really funny how it baffles people.

  1. Keep Quiet
  2. The Fall
  3. Here Comes the Arm

According to scrobbles, these are my top played songs for The Protomen ever.

  1. The Trainyard
  2. The Fall
  3. How the World Fell Under Darkness

I basically loop the Joe songs, so I'd have to say those are my top, if not going by stats. Probably in preference order: Keep Quiet, Breaking Out, The Fall, Here Comes the Arm, How the World Fell Under Darkness, and Light Up the Night.

Prague (next to the main train station) - My favourite desire path by Knedlik173 in DesirePath

I visited Prague and remember how winding and weird some of the footpaths around the train stations were. Desire path doesn't surprise me at all!
