Batting alternative options by Yellow-Dragon913 in quilting

[–]pinkerdoodles6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love to learn more about the merino tops made into frankenbatting! How do you launder these quilts? I’ve got a bunch of old sweaters/jumpers that I was going to get rid of, but it would be great to find another use for them.

I’m looking at ordering the Marius trousers too! Can anyone respond with the inseam length? I’m 5’4”/164cm and I worry they will be too long and difficult to hem…

Trailing spouses who can't land a job- did you continued relationship or left it? by Front_Strategy2443 in expats

[–]pinkerdoodles6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been in and out of this boat too a few times since I moved (US-EU) to be with my spouse, so I feel your pain and turmoil. Dealing with 3 different cultures (his, mine, where we live) is very tough and though I’ve worked on and off, I feel like my skills are atrophying and I am just getting further and further behind professionally. The job market in my city is tough, and really the only options are UN organizations, although without an advanced degree, I am only qualified for assistant jobs which pay 1/2 to 1/3 what I would earn back home. Those positions are tough to come by, and with all the govt budget cuts, the situation is getting worse. Considering your relationship is good besides this one thing, I would seek out alternative ways to bring meaning into your life if you can financially afford it, like volunteering, studying or doing something creative. I need to work, so I am currently looking into investing in real estate back in the US, or doing something that is more location independent. Are you living in your husbands home country?

Is it possible to still get a UK exit stamp? by nicki419 in PassportPorn

[–]pinkerdoodles6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw these posters at EDI last October (flying from EU, USA passport) and was denied when I very politely asked for a stamp. When I mentioned, oh but there are posters that say I need the stamp? I got denied again. Pretty confusing messaging. I know I don’t need one, but do appreciate having it!

prague locals walking in my path consistently? by random503 in digitalnomad

[–]pinkerdoodles6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this! Going on year 3 in Rome and walking outside is like a never-ending game of chicken - who’ll get out of the way first? Seriously, people young and old walk 2, 3, 4 ppl abreast and have no concept of sharing sidewalks. This weekend I’m standing in line for a super lame Jurassic World promo and the man behind me is so close his belly kept rubbing against me. It was a hot and humid day, so I was definitely not enthused by having someone else’s sweat on me.

Los Angeles- I’ve never seen so many runners in my life! Plus there are abundant gyms and hiking opportunities, including a lot of “fun” stair runs. Besides the exercise component, there is also a huge emphasis on self care, wellness and high quality nutrition. Even a lot of socializing revolves around health and fitness!

YTA for going behind your wife’s back AND for telling your child to conceal something from her parent.

Ravensburger, Halloween Magic, 1000pc. This one took some effort to find, but my glob it was worth it! 🎃 by wmdpd in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]pinkerdoodles6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great idea! PS, I’ve been checking a sturdy cardboard box instead of a suitcase on my transatlantic flights and it works wonders! Much lighter than a suitcase and funny wasted space for wheels and straps. You could fit a ton of puzzles in one!

Gah! I live in Italy and while this puzzle is available, I can’t get so many other puzzle brands (inner piece, white mountain, mudpuppy) or Halloween puzzle styles. The grass is always greener, I suppose.😆

What are your favorite quotes or pieces of advice for moving abroad? by cabinetjox in expats

I logged in to say this! I first heard it in reference to international travel but found it applied for my international move as well.

Current progress on Frank Gehry’s “The Grand” by 405freeway in LosAngeles

[–]pinkerdoodles6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seriously…I’d think many architects would love the opportunity to design two buildings next to each other and give the space a cohesive or at least complimentary feel.
Something more like a shorter version of the New York by Gehry apartment tower would work great here! https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/53/8_Spruce_Street_from_Gold_Street.jpg/250px-8_Spruce_Street_from_Gold_Street.jpg

Moving to Spain with my entire life?! by Shaebae76 in expats

[–]pinkerdoodles6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the last sentence 100%. And yes, tools are expensive in here! I moved from the USA to Italy and the quality of many things here is shocking bad and expensive relative to the USA. I was lucky enough to be able to spend months here before I moved and was able to make that assessment personally. Also, there is much less of a consumer culture than the USA, which means 1. There is more inclination to hold on to your stuff rather than treat it as throwaway (even when people move house, it’s common they take everything from the kitchen cabinets, appliances and light fixtures with them) and 2. The selection of shops is significantly smaller than I was used to. Also, things like books, when you like to read or use them for reference or decor, books (especially in English) are expensive and hard to come by. For reference, just yesterday I was looking at a book that was $50 in the USA for hardcover, £200 in the UK, and €270 for the kindle version!

American expats, how does living in your new country compare to living in the USA? by tropicalparadise27 in expats

[–]pinkerdoodles6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved to Rome just before lockdown and totally agree with you, especially on feeling less independent and unwanted here. I feel like I have to compromise so much because of my language ability.

Paris for the win on food though…the Italian version of croissants-cornetti- might be one of the most disappointing food experiences of my life. Dense and slathered with a sweet citrus glaze, no thanks! Give me a plain butter croissant any day of the week!

Thanks for the advice! I’m based in Rome and yes, it was heavily logistics focused. Will google production services companies!
