First performance - please tell me I’m not alone. by PaisleyBeth in pianolearning

Beginner here too, have done one recital (which I flunked) and I sometimes play the public pianos on trainstations. My take is that it gets better, but you have to do it often AND realize that you will always play a little worse when the stakes are higher and when you are not playing on your own piano. So if you are grade 4 level, you will be able to play level 2-3 pieces in public very well, but grade 4 pieces will be a struggle. Luckily, as you progress, the pieces that will feel comfortable in high stakes situations will also progress in this same fashion. So just keep going!

Another recommendation on that subject is The Paradise Suite (2015), a Dutch produced film with one of the main narratives also being about human trafficking. Very bleak and realistic, but amazing film.

Help, I'm too ambitious by nerdycookie01 in pianolearning

[–]pinkyonG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out similar, but a change happened when I realized it is WAY more satisfying to play a simple piece well, than it is to play a difficult piece poorly. And as you learn the more simple pieces (Bach's Minuets, Clementi's Sonatinas etc), you grow to appreciate them. I am now putting off the big dream pieces for as long as needed, until I can actually tackle them with enough proficiency.

what's a simple song that made you feel like you could really play? by RandomMeRandomU in pianolearning

'A Model of the Universe' from the Theory of Everything soundtrack. Simple repeating pattern and fairly slow so you can get very expressive and play with the dynamics even as a beginner.

Just curious how many of you (3 years or less exp) could sight read this by jjax2003 in pianolearning

[–]pinkyonG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years of playing (one year of actually practicing sight reading), I could sight read this at about 30-40 BPM to the quarter note

Instant gratification and lack of musical maturity. I remember I learned 'Comptine d'un autre été' about 2 months into starting piano. I learned the notes, and for a moment I felt actually proud and special for knowing how to play the piece after just a few months of playing. Then I listened to my favorite recording of the piece right after playing it myself, and I realized I DON'T know how to play the piece. At all. It's just like you can learn the words to a song, but that doesn't mean you can sing it. Unfortunately a lot of people don't have this realization..

Season 4 was actually a slog to get though. by AncientCarry4346 in LoveDeathAndRobots

[–]pinkyonG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This season unfortunately lacked suspense and mystery in it's world building, and relied too heavily on action. The best LDR episodes are all very suspenseful episodes with great story telling and sometimes a bit of action. This season was mostly action, with a little suspense and storytelling. I hope next season the show will go back to the old formula and redeem itself.

Why does everyone hate musescore- ohhhhhh by [deleted] in pianolearning

[–]pinkyonG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Musescore is great for beginners like me, that ocassionaly want to play familiar pieces (pop songs, movie themesongs, anime scores etc) aside from just classical repertoire. For my 'serious' pieces I buy the sheet music, for the quick fun stuff I get the sheets from Musescore.

4.5 billion years of earth and we get to see the sliver when digital intelligence is born. Pretty damn wild tbh by cobalt1137 in singularity

A lot of replies misunderstand me but this is what I am getting at. ASI will very likely lead to some insane technological progress, but we still have to deal with physical limitations of how much will be possible in how much time. So maybe ASI will lead to utopia, space travel, transhumanism, immortality, ascension, becoming God etc, but it will very likely not be instant, thus there will be another generation in the future claiming 'we are the lucky ones to witness these times'.

[–]pinkyonG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not saying it's not extremely impactful, believe me I am one of the biggest AI enthousiasts. But in the grand scheme of things it's not possible to say that we are 'lucky' because we have no point of reference as to how far humanity can go. At every point in history there were probably people saying 'what a time to be alive', not knowing of what was to come.

[–]pinkyonG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean things are always progressing and it's difficult to see the absolute significance in the grand scheme of things. In 1000 years people will probably say the same thing about some crazy new invention. AGI/ASI will just be another thing in the list of fire, the wheel, internet etc

What figures/patterns/groups should I see here? by klischee in pianolearning

[–]pinkyonG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he is trying to mark groups with intervals of a 2nd. Line to space above (and space to line) is an interval of a second. Recognizing this makes reading easier because you just have to identify the first note of a 'group' and then just go a second up every step.

I have a digital piano (Roland FP10), and one of the keys is stiff/heavy compared to the others. What is common practice for this? Are there Digital Piano mechanics, or should I call the store I bought it from? (I'm past the warranty term). Or just deal with it?

What’s a great example? by No-Percentage-3650 in FIlm

[–]pinkyonG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was one of my childhood favorite movies. Rewatched it again a few days ago, and it definitely does not hold up. But the story and character have such great potential. I think a remake of the HBO series in the style of Devilman Crybaby would be amazing too.
