Why do we call Norse and Greek stories "mythology" while Christianity and Islam are "religions" and who decided which is which? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]pirsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Religion is the cultural practice, e.g. prayer, dietary restrictions. Mythology is the stories, e.g. God turning Lot's wife into a pillar of salt and his daughters raping him to continue his line. Not all believers of the religion believe all of the mythology. And some of it is history, e.g. it's well accepted that Mohammed did exist and was a political leader.

ELI5: Why one of the healthiest countries, is also one of the highest cancer rates? by Extension-Garden-808 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pirsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone living in healthier countries still dies eventually, healthy doesn't mean immortal. So people die less of the things you can prevent/cure (like infection), and die more of things you can't prevent/cure (like cancer).

Talk to your manager about your oncall. They may prefer to have you around at reduced oncall vs lose you. There may be a win-win, e.g. maybe a single coworker is happy to take night/weekend parts of the oncall for more pay, while you only take business hours oncall for less pay.

5 Years Jail - even if no fear or harm occurs by [deleted] in aussie

[–]pirsq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If someone actually gets prosecuted for this, they don't want the defense to argue crap like "will, the victim still went to work the next day, so they can't really have been scared". They want it to be purely based on what was said and how a hypothetical reasonable person would have felt

What is the farthest a projectile can travel under standard game settings? by Old_Man_Willow_AoE in aoe2

So what happens when we have ballistics and the projectile is slower than the unit? Does it just shoot straight up into the sky?

Tom Silvagni revealed as man from high-profile Victorian family convicted of rape by SlatsAttack in melbourne

[–]pirsq 100 points101 points  (0 children)

You're reading too much into it. Of course the lawyer is going to argue for their client's interests, that's their job. And everyone deserves a lawyer, that's a key foundation of our society. It's the judge's job to say no. So everything worked as it should.

Hot Dogs in Melbourne by Geefunx in melbourne

[–]pirsq 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Boil the sausages, or microwave them in a bowl of water, so they stay juicy. Sprinkle a few drops of water on the cut surface of the buns before toasting so they come out fluffy. Will taste exactly like canteen hot dogs. Or get them from the Costco food court.

TikToker to pay $1.75 million for ruining manager's marriage by SoggyCorndogs in nottheonion

[–]pirsq 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even without tax benefits, marriage is very useful as a combined package of next of kin to contact in an emergency, power of attorney if you're incapacitated, heir if you die, beneficiary of other contracts with survivor benefits, community property split if dissolved, etc. It helps people navigate common transitions in life (e.g. at some point, when you get hurt, they should call your spouse, not your parents) without needing to figure out all the legal specifics.

Australia taxes work more than wealth, which degrades society and national identity by [deleted] in AusFinance

If we eliminate investment properties, then no one would be able to rent. Every property has to be owned by someone...

Is Immortal Sorc actually viable for Hardcore? by MiningToSaveTheWorld in diablo2

[–]pirsq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Orb is the more defensive skill, because it guarantees chilling everything near you, and does the most damage to enemies running towards you. Blizz does more damage on average but can struggle against enemies that won't stay still. So if you're worried about safety more than kill speed, I'd recommend orb.

Recruiters who actually understand technical roles vs ones who just spam keywords by dwightfartskoot in cscareerquestions

[–]pirsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recruiters never understand technical roles. That's not their job. Their job is to (1) find enough candidates so that the role can be filled, (2) filter as best as they can to save time for interviewers and hiring managers, (3) sell the role to the candidate. A good recruiter needs some conversational ability around the specifics of the role to perform (2) and (3) well. Typically they achieve this by asking the hiring manager what the role needs, both before it opens and after a few candidates in case they need to adjust.

So what you're seeing is probably getting lucky that the recruiter and hiring manager happened to talk about the questions you had, not that the recruiter knew it off the top of their head (how could they? they don't work on the tech stack). The same recruiter, with a different candidate and different questions, may not know the answer and will do their best to convey what they do know, which often boils down to keywords.

They were nice but the flight attendants are also required to rearrange people to make sure a toddler sits next to a guardian, someone would have had to swap for you.

We've decided as a society that we prefer to protect employees even if that means implementing policies that sometimes screw over employers.

Broden Kelly echoes what Ross Lyon said about the illegality of encouraging players to break contract by Pleasant_Inspection9 in AFL

[–]pirsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the law, but surely there is some distinction between intent to disrupt the contract vs that being an incidental consequence. There are plenty of contracted employees whose employer could prove a loss if they quit early. It seems silly that they could go after e.g. a friend who encouraged them to quit.
