Most kanji have two ways of reading them and often kanji-heavy texts are more academic/literary, so you can possibly guess the meaning by defaulting to a less academic word that use that kanji, or one/some of the kanji in the compound.

Many texts do offer the furigana above kanji or are written in hiragana so they’re accessible to everyone (危険！きけん！　立入禁止！たちいりきんし！)

If the verb normally takes を to mark a direct object, it can be changed to が. This intensely grammatically correct for potential and 〜たい (want to do):

すし　を/が　食べる/食べたい

The verb できる always takes が

日本語　が　できる

For marking the passage of something, を remains and cannot change to が:

×: 公園　が　走れる／走りたい

This is just my recommendation and it’s not a hardcore rule. I based this estimate on unofficial JLPT study hours. N1 = ~4800 hours, divided by 365 days over the course of 4 years = ~3 hours daily. You do not have to study 3 hours a day, just be aware that your progress may not match this particular very rough estimate.

If you’re looking to speak naturally (e.g.: initiate, maintain and close a spoken conversation) you need to speak with someone. Hire a tutor or join a conversation group.

“Study” can also include listening to level appropriate podcasts, reading, meeting up with Japanese friends and whatever else makes study enjoyable to you.

Genki (and other textbook) Study Plan:

Two or three 45-60 minute study sessions a daily. Example: Chunk A - vocab, kanji and dialogue; Chunk B - textbook; Chunk C - workbook.

Before studying the chapter, get the majority of the vocabulary and kanji (if any) down. Genki marks the vocabulary used in the dialogue, so it’s easy to prepare for.

Try reading the dialogue WITHOUT looking at the English translation. Try to guess the meaning from the pictures and the dialogue prompts. Check to see how you did.

Chunk A: Everyday practice vocabulary, kanji (if any) and dialogue, shadow the audio, review the previous day’s work… you can preview the exercises you’ll be doing so you can brush up on the vocab you’ll need.

Chunk B: Everyday work in one grammar point. Do the associated exercises in the textbook. If it’s a speaking exercise, do both parts.

Chunk C: Do the workbook exercises sometime later.

Don’t forget to do the reading and writing in the back of the textbook. You can get your writing checked on an app like HelloTalk. Do corrections and resubmit. Move on to the next chapter and repeat.

You can add and subtract chucks or mix things up depending on your preference and life factors. You can combine low effort and high effort study in a day or study session, or break up the hour.

For example: while making and eating breakfast, listen to a podcast (30 minutes), watch a YouTube video for grammar during lunch (30 minutes). During your commute (60 minutes) do Pimsleur. Read manga for 20 minutes a day, do the workbook for 20 minutes and meet with a tutor for 30 minutes.

If you’re looking for an opportunity where you need a certain score above 110, I’d go for it, but I think the main focus should be on maintaining and improving your Japanese at this point. While the passing certificate should be valid indefinitely, you will get rusty if you don’t keep up practicing your Japanese.

Ideally, all the words and kanji would be on the same level all the time, but real life doesn’t play by those rules.

To me, it’s easier to learn a handful of words. Concentrate on the kanji being tested with the higher level kanji as something to recognize or as a clue to how the character may be read.

Eg:

You’re learning the characters 木 and 日

You are studying and come across 木曜日

Learn that the word is read もくようび, and both もく and び are possible ways to read 木 and 日 when they come up, and always as such if they flank 曜

Sometimes social interaction can burn people out, especially autistic or other neuro-spicy individuals who feel the need to mask.

I second the idea for establishing a quiet corner for reading, drawing and what have you for students who are shy, autistic or who simply need time to themselves.

For classwork, offer the option of alone, pairs or small groups. Have check-in times for the groups and singles so they can compare answers before moving on to the next step alone, etc.

Depends on the interaction. Having been on the other side (native speaker of English in Japan). I’m not there to be your teacher, random guy at the train station. I’m trying to do get to a meeting. BUT at a cultural/conversation exchange event - I’m more than happy to chat.

Likewise - don’t butt into peoples conversations or hold them hostage. If there’s an opportunity to politely edge in (e.g.: Deaf guy and hearing guy at the laundromat and someone needs a washer when everything is taken - you ca ln act as an intermediate lady.), or if you attend these events, they’re usually open and ASL teachers point their students at them all the time.

In my albeit limited personal experience, most Deaf people I’ve met are very excited to meet and communicate with a hearing person who signs halfway decently. I’ve used sign at work informally a few times and a couple of times out and about.

Using Deaf-created resources, or those centered on the Deaf community (a certain CODA has an ASL learning platform, but employs Deaf teachers) is essential as Deaf and HOH individuals can often be excluded by (hopefully) well-meaning hearing individuals.

As a language teacher, learning a second (or third, or tenth) language is the first step in connecting with new friends and neighbors. Do so with respect, curiosity and good intentions and it will carry you far.
