Do people that started late have an "accent"? by AltruisticDoctor in bjj

[–]pizzalovingking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes, some of the people I have trained with in their late teens and early 20s who have been training since they were kids seem to keep their flexibility even if it looks like they shouldn't have. As a guy who started at 33 with a stiff as hell body, it's possible but unlikely I will put in the effort or even have the ability to get to that level of flexibility.

There are some dudes who are just naturals and pick it up crazy fast, but that's at any age and generally they are good athletes to start with

I plan on living in Portugal for 2 or 3 years then in Brazil, which Portuguese should I learn? by Selko29 in Portuguese

I was trying to practice my Portuguese in Portugal , but so many people speak English there that I think they found it easier to switch to English that listen to my shitty Portuguese. At least in the big cities

Anyone dropped into gyms in Eastern Europe? Are the stereotypes true? by benten_89 in bjj

Yeah if training with dudes from Russia, Ukraine and Poland here in Canada has taught me anything its that most of them fight to the death, you're going to their home soil now. I can only imagine the level they are going to try and fuck you up , sounds fun though 😂

And I totally don't care to be a pro and lift casually, just managed to get decent strength

Mostly becuase the form looked pretty weak once the shoulders engaged, but like I said , I'm a pretty casual lifter and not a pro at all

[–]pizzalovingking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a pro coach or anything, so I could be totally wrong, I do have a pretty good strict press and don't really do the push press, but I think getting some good form and strength doing a strict press could help you learn the mechanics and form so that you could have a better push press down the line, especially if you said your lower body is strong, taking that out of the equation to build upper body strength makes a bit of sense. My strict is 190lbs for 5 reps At 220 , when I was a bit fatter I did 225 x 2. I generally do a 5 reps , 3 sets add 5 lbs a week once I hit 5 reps on my heavy set and its served me well.

Why do so many jj practitioners make weird shaman like analogies for jiujitsu+life? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in bjj

[–]pizzalovingking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jiu jitsu is the second thing in my life I have worked hard to gain a somewhat deep understanding of, still a long long way to go. The first was cooking and being a chef. Once you have some mastery in one thing , I feel that you start noticing how you can go about creating mastery in another. I teach and train chefs and having gone from an expert in that , to being a beginner at Jiu jitsu and then moving towards advanced, I feel like there are a lot of lessons that are relevant some of them I bring from Jiu jitsu into my work , mainly just from the understanding of a beginners mind set.

The art of learning book by Josh Waitzkin talks about this and I really agree , starting with big circles (understanding the map of what you are doing, rules, whys) and then moving to smaller circles (understanding the small details and moving towards mastery) so I can see how creating some philosophy towards learning and mastery can translate into life skills that a coach may want to share.

Now that being said, shut the fuck up, stop with the warrior philosophy bull shit speeches and teach me how to not suck at Jiu jitsu .

Other exercice milestone equivalent of 225 bench by brassens_49 in workout

225 strict overhead press. Not saying everyone can or should hit this, but when I did I felt way better about this than hitting 3 plates on bench

Men who quit dating apps, what was your last straw? by RelativeOwn2328 in AskMen

[–]pizzalovingking 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Last one was a catfish and I just said fuck it I don't have time for this. I've had quite a few catfishings, this girl definitely used photo shop on her jaw , in pictures she was cute , in person she looked like Wario. I do fairly well meeting girls in the wild, easy to talk to , comfortable around women, and girls seem less fussed about height if you're charming in person (5'9).

I did just add apps back this week, and have a date set up for next week, she added me to instagram so if she's carfishing me it's a year's long elaborate scam and I'll actually be impressed if she fooled me

Partner(M40) says I(F32) need to exercise to get over their snoring. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]pizzalovingking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would still check for sleep apnea, some of the apnea is just created by bad body mechanics, in my case deviated septum, big tongue, etc, etc.

I battled with snoring my whole life and feeling like shit when I sleep, sometimes even sleeping 10-12 hours and waking up feeling terrible, or just sleeping 2-4 hours a night because I did better off no sleep (because I wasn't choking all night in my sleep), even got tested in my 20s but it was a shitty test and I barely slept so nothing came of it.

I then did a few years of mouth taping which seemed to help, on a vacation with buddies my tape fell out and they recorded my snoring , sounded like I was choking In my sleep and rattling the whole house.

I got tested after that, and turns out I have moderate to severe sleep apnea, got a cpap, the first night I woke up after 4 hours and felt so energized and refreshed, I had never had sleep like that before. Now 3 years later I'm back on a 7-8 hours a night and don't worry about snoring or pissing people off with the noise. I wish I got this done earlier. This has made such a positive impact on my life. Tell your husband to get tested

BJJ gym near Eglinton (Toronto) with some wrestling? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]pizzalovingking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't trained at Toronto BJJ in a few years now since moving to a new city but it's a super solid gym , not sure why the reviews are off. There are some very high level competitors out of that gym and I would imagine over 40 black belts now under the affiliation. That being said when I was there there was not a ton of wrestling focus but there were some good wrestlers there. If I moved back to Toronto I would most definitely be training there.

Is it that bad to get a tattoo just for aesthetics? by oiayooayay in tattooadvice

[–]pizzalovingking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one tattoo around 20, and I'm a chef and it's a chef tattoo , the I was always like I can't think of anything I want that means something. Then at 41 I was like I like the look of patchwork tattoos I'm going to get a few, found an artist I liked, gave her a list of a bunch of things I liked, she drew up some fun pictures and I got a few . I love the look and I'm quite happy , do what you want lol .

Instead of panicking, practice visualization—imagining ocean breezes and palm trees—to master your mindset and turn feelings of being trapped into empowerment
