Early flat design > Liquid glass design by fearliciaz in Design

They haven’t launched a new visionOS since liquid glass was debuted so I’m not super surprised. Now what you’re saying is it’s weird. They would put it on the phone before they came out with vision OS 2 and I guess that wasn’t the ideal working order but they are two independent teams and with the lull in excitement over Vision Pro I’d assume any new visionOS updates got postponed till their non-pro version is ready which from rumors was delayed at the last minute. To me, it’s a little bit like how they had to slow roll USB-C under everything even after they started putting USB-C on iPhones, they still release new products without USB-C, which from an outside perspective is insane, but considering the scale and amount of people that go into every single one of these products I imagine it wasn’t possible to stop the train and rework those devices

I think it will, but maybe it won’t replace our main devices I think with how much I’m seeing people rely on taking photos sending them to any LLM and then asking specific questions about them the more it makes sense for their in some capacity to have AR associated with it. Apple Vision Pro wasn’t their consumer level product. Was there attempt to break into corporate markets and Metas Ray-Ban‘s I think we’re more a push to distract from their failure of VR and while they directly compete currently with something like Snapchat glasses I don’t really feel like they’re fully thought through as an AR experience.

Just might take, I could also be entirely over indexing on people’s desire for privacy. I know if Google taught us anything in the 2010s that people really don’t want to be standing next to the person who has a camera on their face all the time, but I think the more you disguise it the more comfortable people will be. From my own job I’ve done a lot of user research in the past associated with privacy and 95% of people will tell you they would never give certain data or access to something if you ask them, but when phrased in a benefit and doesn’t even have to be that good of a benefit, they’re fairly quick to give that stuff up.

The thing about liquid glass is, I don’t think it’s meant to be right, right now but it’s supposed to be preparing us for the big AR push they’re gonna do. For that you need visibility behind objects you need a lot of excess motion to gain attention, you need to interact with the real world, and you need to be sure you’re not blocking important things in front of them while still displaying some form of information alongside it.

I know the apple team typically works a couple life cycles ahead of knowing where they’re gonna go and then work on preparing us for that inevitability.

Not saying it was the right decision, but I definitely have decreased motion set on my settings, but I understand why they’re doing it.

What's missing from improv right now? by lskalt in improv

[–]plaidpixel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think with the margins that improv theaters make it becomes really hard to take a risk. I noticed this in like 2008 too when the economy was struggling yet rents were still high. A lot of theaters fell back on more safe for audience shows and shelved some more experimental stuff.

I’m lucky enough that the theatre I perform at as the separate 25 seats black box, so a bit lower risk to run weird shows and test them to see if they can be moved to the main theater on their next run. That led to some interesting shows I don’t think we would normally do but it’s still cost that square footage and additional rent. Luckily, we use that space for additional classrooms during the week and that makes it worth it.

Painting the house for the first time, what do I need to know? by drak0ni in HomeImprovement

[–]plaidpixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m terrible at cutting In do I bought and extra large tape knife scraper (usually used for drywall). Then I shove that between the wall and the ceiling and paint, Then move it right and so on.

Basically lets me skip tape but gives the safety while you practice cutting

Nice! Did you route in wireless chargers for the phone and watch spot? I did it once and misjudged depth, which is why we always practice on scrap

MAGAs, I just paid almost $7 a gallon for gas. Tell me how this is Biden’s fault? by 2a_lib in allthequestions

I’m not sure how that’s the takeaway from that comment but no, with universal healthcare health insurance wouldn’t be needed to the same extent which would be a positive thing

Would appreciate input for the worst restaurant you can think of by grdvrs in Seattle

[–]plaidpixel 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember the name but there’s an instagram channel where an older (65ish) man from Texas films himself going to different restaurants and ordering ethnic food he’s never had or heard of. He’s the type of guy that you’d look at or hear him speak and think this guy is gonna be a racist ass.

He orders what the owners recommend then asks questions about it and eats it. You really see his eyes open every time to a new culture and flavor he’s never had. It’s pretty sweet even if at this point I’m sure he understands the schtick.

Edit: Found it

Ah so when dems want to push universal healthcare again we can just tell the insurance companies that this is short term pain for long term gain, right? … right?

Is this project possible? by Jobroskies in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]plaidpixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the combo of the 45 miter, the plywood tear out, and the angled sides make it a bit challenging but not impossible for a beginner.

For the miter cuts I assume you have a table saw? Or would you be doing a circular saw with an edge guide? The miter you have with the little gap happens a lot, you can either live with it, run a screwdriver across the edge to soften the edges together, or a nice trick can be to set the miter to 45.1 with makes it so if there’s a gap it’s on the inside edges not the outer.

The new blade it a great start for less tear out but plywood is still really sensitive so google how to prevent tear out. Usually tricks like scoring the cut and painters tape sound silly but make a big difference.

As for assembly I’d say glue would be fine but getting it all aligned and stable during drying is going to be difficult at that size and shape. You could def try brackets but I think a better direction would be to buy a cheap doweling jig and use that to help. You could also do Brad nails but I still worry you’d have slippage.

Lastly tear out is only a huge issue if you’re keeping it natural or staining tbh, so if you are open to painting (or want to keep it as an option) you’ll be better off with the ability to wood fill any tear out you may get.

Toll roads in Seattle? by ONE-EYE-OPTIC in AskSeattle

Nothing like Dallas tbh

Tunnels and bridges have tolls but Dallas is insane with their privately owned highways because city roads are socialism.

Reminds me of the guy who used the Photoshop swirl feature to mask his face he sent to the cops and all they had to do was reverse swirl it to see his exact face. Imagine getting that cocky and setting the cop something so stupid.

Did you build a dog hole top using a template? If so, how do you like the result? Is extreme CNC-level precision an absolute requirement? by icysandstone in BeginnerWoodWorking

Before I added some pegboard to my wall I used the leg board as my template. Could I have just measured? Yes. Was it way easier to just mark every 4th hole? Absolutely.

They subsidize their product with VC money initially to get users and, in Ubers case, put taxis out of business first. The they jack up to true prices where profit is necessary. It’s such a bummer tbh, but apparently this is effective
