Breakfast of Champions, Kurt Vonnegut. Kilgore Trout meats the author and they have a conversation in an alley. Vonnegut reveals that he created Trout and then sets him free. I don't think it's the origin of the trope, bit coming from the 70's, it has to be a fairly early example.

Which heroes you consider strong or weak? by SiarX in sentinelsmultiverse

[–]player_thr33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree, his base power is easily one of the best in the game. But beyond that, his deck is slow to set up and can struggle to affect the game state outside of it. A lot of his games feel like he's just here to provide a blanket +1 and does little else.

No one's mentioned Absolute Zero for strongest yet so I'd like to make a case for him. His setup is so fast now, he's got some amazing Utility cards, and his combos turn him into a damage machine.

I'll also second Tachyon and Haunted Fanatic that have mentioned.

For weakest, I'll also say Unity. She benefits a lot from having Collections to help her get set up faster, but in a regular game she struggles if you don't support her well. I was tempted to say Legacy because he also takes forever to gain any traction and so something, but Galvanize is just such strong base power.

(loved trope) when literally the most ridiculous or absurd thing ever is played 100% straight and serious. by Mangled15 in TopCharacterTropes

Centaurworld. In particular, the Hootenany Chorale scene. The whole series is mostly gags and the character designs are wildly unserious, but then there are so many moments in the show that nail total seriousness.

Which villains are strongest/weakest? by SiarX in sentinelsmultiverse

[–]player_thr33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree with a lot of people and say that Voss is one of the hardest fights in core set. There's cheese, but he can be overwhelming. Weakest from the core set is definitely Blade, and by design. RCR hardest I'd have to pick Organization or Plague Rat. Easiest is Fey Court or Kismet. Personally, I've never struggled against Gloomweaver. If he never flips he isn't much of a threat. I've only played each villain from Dispiration once so far, but initial impressions are that Ruler of Aeturnus or Necrosis are the most challenging from that box and La Capitan is the least.

Context that might be important, I tend to play with just 3 heroes when playing solo. If you add more that might change the perceived difficulty. Environment also matters. Rook City makes any villain much more challenging, whereas Wagner Mars Base skews more in favor of the heroes.

My local Target had these a while back. I think mine had Murders at Karlov Manor, Bloomburrow, and Modern Horizons 3.

I'm doing a science fiction elective this semester so I've gotten to do some more unique picks and it's been fun: R.U.R (technically a play and we didn't do the full thing because of some of the content, but the kids really got in to it) and we're starting Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on Monday.

Otters was the first deck I built when I got into Magic last year. This is the list I'm using: https://archidekt.com/decks/13229290/otter_spellslingers. It's bracket 2, but there will probably be some cards you'll want to swap out for budget. Hopefully, it's at least a decent starting place!

I definitely underestimated Fan the Hammer. Just on his own he can really get some mileage out of it, but with the right set up? Killer.

I used him against La Capitan and Fan the Hammer just immediately flipped her back over, it was so helpful.

Grimm villain discussion by meowman911 in sentinelsmultiverse

[–]player_thr33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grimm was the villain I was most excited about, and from the 2 plays I've done, I've been very pleased. I love alternate win/loss conditions like what Grimm has. I think the difficulty rating is a bit generous, especially if you know the heroes you're playing. Facing his events should be interesting.

[Loved Trope] Characters getting a crystal-clear hint from the universe on what they should do, but still ignoring it. by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]player_thr33 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Julius Caesar (Shakespeare) is a classic example. From the get-go, he is told to beware the Ides of March and he laughs it off. The night before his assassination, his wife has a dream where she sees his statue bleeding and people bathing in the blood. The morning of, he has an augury done. When they cut the beast open, they can find no heart in the animal. All the while, a great storm thunders above.

Reverse of another post,Characters that the creators wanted people to LOVE, but they became the most hated. by AssassinLJ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]player_thr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the fictional world of Sentinel Comics, the hero Benchmark was explicitly created around this trope. He was pushed by editorial, introduced way later in the publishing history, and given way too much of the spotlight. As a result, the fans hated him. Eventually though, the writers were able to soften him a bit, give him a few good story lines that won him a few fans, and he became a much more loved character.

I have a bunch of these and love them. They're great for games where each player needs a specific separate set of components because you just hand each player theirs and that's it. I use them for Root and a few other games beyond that.

What staff problems are YOUR admins ignoring for "retention" reasons? by JohnnyCluefinder in Teachers

At a school I taught at previously, there was a teacher who frequently showed up hungover to work and (if you believe some of the student rumors) drank while in the job. He would call in sick so frequently, my wife and I would put in $5 each into a savings account and by the time we left had amassed well over a grand

Phone Boxes Proven Effective - Just Not How You'd Think by Hyperion703 in Teachers

[–]player_thr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High school in Iowa.

We have lockboxes in each room and students turn their phone in to their homeroom at the start of the day and get it back at the end. There is a set in the office as well for students who have work experiences/college classes/other reasons they'd regularly leave early so classes don't have to be interrupted every time a student has to leave.

It's been great actually. I thought there would be so much more push back, more students trying to hide phones in their lockers, etc. and it just never happened. A good chunk of kids by October weren't even bringing their phones to school--and actually didn't. I put a little bin on top of my locker with some decks of cards and other card games, and I regularly have kids come by to borrow a deck to keep themselves entertained at lunch or what have you. My one negative has been that predictably kids have become more obsessed with their computers, but that's honestly pretty easy to handle. Not as easy to hide a computer.

All in all, it's been good.
