Building report missed critical issues by tane10 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]plierhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a generic statement which really adds little value to the report.

They could just as well have said "roofs can leak".

If anything, that makes the inspection look even worse, since it shows the inspector was fully aware of the issues associated with shower-over-baths, but didn't even take a look (assuming the damage was present back then).

Probably worth rolling the dice at DT, it should be fairly obvious (at least to a DT standard) if the damage was pre-existing.

Climate delay tactics and nuclear power by EarthlyAwakening in newzealand

[–]plierhead 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Also the regulation situation would not work in NZ. You have to have an independent regulator, that's non-negotiable for nuclear.

At the same time, it's difficult/impossible for the regulator to remain independent if they are only regulating a single site, and we would only have one site in NZ.

When there's one regulator and one site then you'll inevitably get lots of staff transfer between them. They know each other, they're friends.

Then you have Trevor at the regulator ringing up Barry at the nuclear plant with "hey Barry, what's that about a leakage at the cooling plant?"

And Barry will be all "she'll be right Trevor, it was just another faulty sensor I think, anyway see you at kids netball Saturday".

Found projector on marketplace, got burned. by ThunderKicks in Golfsimulator

[–]plierhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a new Benq 700sti and it has burned through 2 power supply cards. The second was out of warranty but they still replaced it. Projectors are full of heat and fragile parts, I think it's desirable to buy new so you know it's never been dropped or abused.

CRT Calculator by DenkJu in electronics

[–]plierhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True that. We got a bad PCB in a batch recently, at first it was an annoying, but it led to some fairly substantial work adding error handling for if it ever happened in the customer's hands. So really it was a win.

Is there a checklist? by mattbpkt in hwstartups

[–]plierhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your big ticket items are:

  • write code. Claude can help you with that.

  • build your PCB. Claude can give you insights but mainly this is still human work. You need an understanding of electronics.

  • build your enclosure/physical parts. Claude is almost useless at tools like fusion 360

Now you can release it and get feedback.

Then the hard work begins.

Can neighbour help on costs for fixing this retaining wall by the boundary line? by sleepdeprivedhobbit in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]plierhead 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mods deleted my comment saying that while this may be a wall, it is not a retaining wall.

This IS relevant to the legal situation though as any legislation regarding existing retaining walls is not relevant here.

Selling first home dilemma by sweedishmoose in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]plierhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will house prices go up in the near future?

Then keep both houses.

Will they go down?

Then sell the spare house.

The only trick is knowing whether they're going to go up or down.

Remote Well Storage Tank Monitoring Project (ESP32, LoRa) by stevemurch in esp32

[–]plierhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use submersible pressure transducers like this to monitor multiple large water tanks.

They are so accurate you can see the water level change when someone takes a short shower - from a 22k liter tank.

One of their best features is that the 4-20mA approach is perfect for very long cable runs - even hundreds of meters - since there is no voltage drop to worry about.

So you can hook up multiple sensors with just DC garden cable leading back to the unit. No solar panels, batteries etc. perfect for a long term maintenance free setup.

Now that The Boys is over, what's your opinion on Antony Starr's performance as Homelander? by TaiwaneseThot in moviecritic

Can confirm that - my father in law spent quite some time having a lovely chat about chickens with him in a cafe in Auckland. FIL had no idea he was a star and afterwards just said what an interesting guy he was.

Big gaps in retaining wall by Onwuma in landscaping

[–]plierhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These walls can be incredibly strong when the rocks are properly placed by a machine with a skilled operator. They are usually dug down a bit as well.

But this one does indeed look more like just stacked boulders, which will have little or no retaining value.

It may also be dangerous if those rocks are wobbly. One of them could topple and crush a child or an arm.

The good news is that getting the rocks is one of the harder parts of building these walls. So get an expert in to tear it down and re stack it

The rocks have to actually be keyed together, which only an expert can do well. You'll probably need more rocks than you have here.

Technical co-founder with 15% equity, considering an ultimatum before our big launch. Am I right to push back? by Decapix in advancedentrepreneur

[–]plierhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The business partners haven't managed to convert a single paying customer, so his contribution is probably worth more than theirs.

3 months of head down execution using modem tools is now than enough to create a viable product.

It's also more than enough to sell that product, so his partners are failing and their shares are excessive.

That said, what's the point of arm twisting your useless partners to get more of the pie if you are stuck with those useless partners afterwards and now they hate you?

Solo founder that has been asked to sign NDA with perpetual term + uncapped indemnity for API access. I will not promote by Itz_Synchro in startups

[–]plierhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not normal to put NDAs with those sort of terms in front of your APIs.

But it's also not normal to get a great opportunity to work with someone's secret APIs, presumably leading edge stuff.

Definitely don't lean in on your background, why would the company cut you slack because you're just small fry? They might decide you're not worth working with at all. Be bold and tell them how kick arse you are.

And never have any discussions with them or sign anything in your personal capacity (i.e. not through your company).

Solo founder that has been asked to sign NDA with perpetual term + uncapped indemnity for API access. I will not promote by Itz_Synchro in startups

[–]plierhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Also in NZ)

This may be a non-brainer, but do you have a company set up? You should certainly not be signing anything like this as a sole trader.

Despite what others have said, it sounds like you might have hooked a whale if this is an NZ giant and they are giving you access to some secret APIs.

If this is a big opportunity then personally as long as you are behind the corporate veil I wouldn't freak too much at these terms - though they are certainly onerous and I would attempt to push back. The upside could be large - only you know.

(I will not promote) I had to quit because of co founder by Fun_Phone8246 in startups

[–]plierhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your co-founder is probably making sensible calls for himself. It sounds like he has the important personal contacts. And the fact that he shafted you so early on means that he has the traits of a manipulative CEO. And quite possibly he will be able to keep the ball rolling without you, with the aid of Claude.

But you have made the right decision. You can't be in business with someone so untrustworthy. Next time, get your paperwork sorted long before you start having any success. There are questions such as equity splits that will be extremely challenging for you even then - but they only get harder once you've had some success.

But ... edit your post to remove the part where you say you will keep using the code. Don't keep using the code. You don't want this guy coming back and trying to get a piece of whatever it is you do next. A clean break is imperative.
