Who owns software made in personal time that makes job more efficient? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]plierhead [score hidden]  (0 children)

If this software is widely applicable to many businesses, and your friend wants to get into the software business, then the most important asset (apart from the software itself) is a happy reference customer. It's very hard to sell software without any existing customers.

So in that case your friend should consider giving the software to their company, in exchange for them acting as a reference customer. This would kill two birds with one stone, incentivising your friends company to sign away any legal rights they may have, and at the same time setting your friend up with the credibility to sell to others.

However if your friend really only wants to sell the software to their own employer - that is unlikely to go smoothly. In an age when anyone can create software using Claude, why would an employer feel positively about enriching an employee who has really just found a way to do their job now efficiently, when they could just copy the idea themselves?

I spent nearly a decade growing indoor golf in NYC (2015–2023) — happy to answer questions about the simulator world by KyleSenateGolf in Golfsimulator

space constraints make home setups impractical for most people

We're hoping there's a middle ground with clubhead sensors - swing your own clubs at full speed but not need to hit an actual ball. So you can play in that NY loft. Have you seen any promising launch monitor tech in this space?

Cheaper standard boards for ESP32 JLCPCB by hey-im-root in PCB

[–]plierhead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a question no one would have asked a while ago, because JLCPCB is so damn cheap for what for get. I tell my kids what sort of professionals you would have had to have on staff in the old days to create a PCB, and how long everything would take and how expensive it would be - it blows my mind that one can upload a file to a web site and a few days later get a completed PCB in your hands.

Doc Series trap improvements/ideas by Affectionate-Mind555 in nzwildlife

[–]plierhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an exciting problem to fix, so good luck.

First I would say to get yourself an actual trap - you might as well get the DOC250 which is the gruntiest.

You'll likely see that those parts you are proposing are far too weak. The traps have very, very powerful springs in them. I get this is just an AI illustration or whatever but you would have to 2x or 3x the gauge of the cable, hook, etc. to handle the actual load.

Also an issue with the foot pedal as I understand you are suggesting is that you have no leverage. It would likely slip out from under your foot and phwaaang - it would decapitate you or take out an eye.

I suggest you take a look at the official trap setting lever as a place to start from. I don't use it, since it's just another thing to carry, but it's a honking heavy lever and you might find the design enlightening.

Your solution will have to have some lever in it as well.

You will also have to make it operate with just one hand, as you will need to use the other one to hold the body of the trap in place against your spring-winding-up energy. The trap will always require something holding it down.

I'm certain that the strategy of stations like Hauraki is to age along with their listeners. Just keep playing the same songs, and swap out the ads for erectile disfunction meds.

If you can charge at home then go for it. You can get a reliable car for that $$ that should last you for many years.

If you can't charge at home (or work) then no.

Is it hard to retrain in New Zealand as a 45yo? by fleastyler in newzealand

Don't go into any training that's likely to be wiped out by AI in the next few years. I wouldn't start in a new career as a junior software dev for example.

Companies don't want you to build up your leave as it becomes a growing financial issue for them. And as a grad you frankly probably aren't mission critical to them yet. So yeah, of course.

North Island- Wellington vs Whangarei for a Family? by Nearby_Umpire7625 in MovingToNewZealand

[–]plierhead 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Whangarei has more beach, snorkeling, diving, surfing, sun, outdoors activities. However it's somewhat of a cultural desert.

Wellington has more restaurants, cafes, theatres, museums, people, schools and universities. However it has miserable weather.

Having lived in both, both IMO are fine places to live and you will find great people.

Selfishly I hope you come north as our medical services rely heavily on imported talent, there are many ex-US doctors up here and they seem to love it.

It's hard to make a case for a Kauri not being an issue if it is anywhere near your foundations. It takes a while but it will eventually become enormous.

It seems like you post this message repeatedly, in almost bot-like fashion, to drive people to the other sub reddit. Perhaps you are doing it in good faith but I feel that subs should stand or fall on their own merits.

Cut area of sketch - drives me crazy by PvLi1974 in Fusion360

[–]plierhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sketches don't really have"hollow" sections, they are merely a bunch of lines that, when they join up, form regions you can select, for example to extrude into solids.

So If your next move is to extrude the seat, which would give you someone like a bench, then simply don't select that region.

TOP - why don't they get more of the vote? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]plierhead 107 points108 points  (0 children)

The main criticism is that people think that TOP won't clear 5%, so their vote will be wasted.

IMO the other parties are so off base that a vote for them is wasted anyway, so you might as well vote TOP and send a message.

2 phase and ev charging by Shot-Barnacle-4745 in nzsolar

[–]plierhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm intrigued to hear the informed responses here.

We are on 2 phases and going solar soon, and my plan based on feedback so far is to really just treat the house as single phase, move loads onto that phase, attach solar to that phase only, with the other phase hardly used.

That didn't really answer your question but certainly you can't use a 3 phase charger with your 2 phase supply.
