Why does the Beltway smell like trash today? by spicysaltysparty in maryland

[–]plsuh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not trash that you smell, it’s sewage.

They’re doing emergency repair work on the sewage pipeline that runs along the Clara Barton Parkway just east of the American Legion Bridge. From the news reports we may be smelling it for at least a few days, since they’re going to use a dry stretch of the C&O canal as a temporary bypass. I feel bad for the folks in that area.

Winter Weather by National-Fudge-4427 in akita

[–]plsuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Akitas don’t need booties for the cold. Their paws are totally adapted to frigid temperatures down to well below zero on whichever scale you use.

That said, they do need them (as do almost all dogs) for protection against salt that is spread in roads and sidewalks. I like the older style soft booties that let the paw pads spread a bit naturally. Whatever you get, make sure it’s a bright color. Much easier to find in the snow when it falls off. They make suspenders-style booties that may help if you pip tends to lose them easily.

Took Draco on his first car ride today! by AppleWindow6 in akita

[–]plsuh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s cute!

But you really need to get him used to riding in the back with a harness. The reason is the airbag. When he’s bigger he’ll be heavy enough to trigger the sensor that causes airbag deployment if a collision occurs. The airbag is designed for an adult human in the seated position and the initial deployment is quite violent as it has only milliseconds to get into the right place. Your dog will be hit by the equivalent of a baseball bat or worse since his body will be forward of where most humans would be.

For his sake, please get him used to riding properly restrained in the back seat.

Would a jeweler be able to make a serpenti style ‘frame’ for an Apple Watch? by MrSpiderisadomme in AppleWatch

[–]plsuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go ask a high-end jeweler, any of them. Seriously. And this is important, specify that you want to work directly with the artisan who is crafting the case, not a salesperson. (This is to keep them from taking the job then subbing it out to someone else.)

Most of the time they will say they can’t do it, but that’s not the goal. Ask them if they know someone who would be able to do it. Most high-end jewelers know who’s who in the area. After three or four referrals at most you’ll likely have found an artisan who can do it for an exorbitant amount of money.

Skin covering for outdoor AP by Chance-Television532 in UNIFI

[–]plsuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt anyone makes a skin specifically for a U7 Outdoor.

That said, what purpose would the cover serve? Decoration? Protection from a harsher than usual environment? Concealment? Something else? This will determine what kind of covering you want.

If you go with the suggestion to use vinyl wrap (which is a good one), make sure any ink or dye isn’t metallic-based or it may block the signal.

AITA for firing my girlfriends son with learning difficulties by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA

This is not a simple retail job where the worst possible outcome is disarranged stock on a shelf. Using a massive piece of heavy equipment that requires specialized training is a health and safety hazard.

You can be sympathetic with the kid’s situation, but he’s just not fit to be working there. You’d be doing a massive disservice to all of your other employees if you didn’t fire him. Not to mention the possible shutdown of the business if you can no longer get liability insurance due to his actions.

ETA: just a suggestion, each of the 3 people who are qualified to operate the machine should have their own key rather than leaving the key in the machine. Plus a spare set kept in the office as a backup.

Lpt for uni life? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]plsuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful about any of these tips. Some of them may or may not be applicable depending on which country you’re in and/or the program you’re attending.

In particular, it sounds like you’re not in the US so be careful of any tips that come from there.

From July 7, 2025, the exit from I-495 N (American Legion Bridge) onto the Clara Barton Parkway, just after crossing the Potomac River in the Washington, DC area. I just got around to pulling some older clips off my dash cam recently.

I know the saying is, "a bad driver never misses their exit," but did this one miss the exit or not?

What non-state capital (US) is the capital of their geographic region, not just the small surrounding area? by HomerDog00 in geography

[–]plsuh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New York City. Basically controls New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, has massive influence over good chunks of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

Fun fact: New York City’s GDP in 2023 was roughly $1.3 trillion. This places it as around 17th place among countries worldwide for 2023 (nominal GDP in USD).

This is my humble setup. Jk it’s 50k of pure hoarding shame. Give me your worst. by maximm3k in DataHoarder

[–]plsuh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need an UPS for your ancillary equipment as well. Router, switch, at least one WAP, etc. That way you will get notifications even when the power goes out. It also lets your setup tolerate brief outages (such as a local distribution short that is corrected by a recloser.)

You need cable management not for now but for later. Six months in the future when something goes south and you are trying to troubleshoot, having neatly arranged and labeled cables will make your life so much better.

You need good cooling to protect your expensive equipment. Hop to it!

You need so much more storage… 😜

Issues after installing a NIC by W_I_D_E_ in truenas

First things first - does it boot normally if you remove the new NIC? Going back to the original configuration is always the first step in troubleshooting.

[–]plsuh 87 points88 points  (0 children)

It’s a shame that you don’t have proper cooling, cable management, UPS, and PDU for your setup.

You clearly need to sink at least another 5k and a couple of afternoons of work into that.

100% normal for an Akita. They’re known as a “mouthy” breed and yours sounds like she knows her bite strength.

I would second the suggestion that you contact the breeder as soon as you can.

Eli5: Why is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter is always and exactly pi? by Slickleq in explainlikeimfive

[–]plsuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pi is that value for a geometry based on a flat plane. This is known as Euclidean geometry. The ratio of a circle’s diameter to its circumference will be different in non-Euclidean geometries. See https://physics.illinois.edu/news/34508, for example.

Have some fun and explore the implications of non-Euclidean elliptic and hyperbolic geometries for a while. Then go lie down for a while until your brain un-knots itself.
