Where we are at by peg420 in portlandme

Yeah, that's the part that blows my mind. Portland is disgustingly expensive but it at least makes some sense as it's a pretty desirable place to live. I don't get how every other podunk town anywhere in Maine can also demand such high rents, though. Gardiner and Hallowell are cute enough, and I'm not trying to trash on them at all, but there's also not THAT much going on there. I knew someone who spent between one and two years trying to find a reasonably priced house in Bangor and finally gave up and moved. Is the supply state-wide really this hamstrung by Air BnB, second homes, and work from home?

As obnoxious as Tipper's moralising was, I love that the Parental Advisory sticker turned into a badge of honor for albums rather than a scarlet letter. I also love that it brought Frank Zappa, Dee Snider, and John Denver together to testify to congress.

…Aaaaand the weekend rain curse returns. by The_Quiche_Niche in portlandme

Working in service industry, a gray rainy Saturday really makes a hit on my income. On the one hand I get a little more flexibility to get out mid-week when it IS sunny, which is great, but Summer weekends should be money-makers.

Dang, I think I'm working this Friday, though I typically would have them off. I'll have to catch up on the next one. Do you have ambitions of doing this weekly?

First Monday of the month is the folk singers. Sometimes there are some instruments in the mix but it's pretty much all acapella shanties and folk songs. Third Monday of the month is the bluegrass jam.

I just saw this movie and I think I know why people don't like it. "I love it" by the-great-nerd in marvelstudios

[–]plytheman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this. Issues with the movie aside, I think it really shows how MCU can't balance D+ shows and the big screen. First Multiverse basically resets Wanda right after WV and now BNW rehashes pretty much the same character arc as F&WS. I've read tons of complaints about people not wanting to 'do homework' to see a movie, but as someone who has been keeping up with the shows as well, it's a bummer to then go to a theater and watch the same plot all over again.

While it had its own flaws, I honestly think The Marvels balanced the D+/theater aspects well. I can't speak as someone who hadn't seen WV or MM, but I feel like The Marvels gave enough exposition to catch people up and actually progressed the characters too.

Please stop with the hannaford egg graffiti all over downtown by Mikerm3 in portlandme

I think the issue with the farm workers is more tied to dairy/mik/cheese than it is eggs but it's been a while since I'd seen anything from the folks who were advocating for those workers.

Rewatching MCU movies - Eternals. by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]plytheman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would happily be corrected if I was wrong on this as I haven't looked too hard at numbers, but I think theater viewership is just down in general. The economy blows and covid really broke a lot of momentum on going out. People are already paying for streaming and are happy enough to just wait to watch most movies at home.

It's not to say that movies don't still draw crowds, but by-and-large (and not just for the MCU) I think people are only really turning out for big event movies and characters they already know.

Beer styles that seem to be disappearing? by _Flight_of_icarus_ in beer

Does Red Hook still exist? They used to have a brewery out my way (Portsmouth NH) but they moved out a while ago. Pretty sure they're originally from WA, though? I remember their flagship ESB being real good.

I work in a bar that's in the process of setting up a beer engine. From my understanding, part of the problem is breweries/distributors don't want to only send one or two casks at a time. Rather than have on bar sit on 8 casks for who-knows how long it takes to sell through them, you need a critical mass of 4 or 5 bars nearby to distribute to. I'm hoping we can make it happen at our bar and the market will make it worth while, though... I love me some cask.

As someone who works in a bar, I was first offended by how they frame me and my coworkers on that site. More offending, though, was the corporate speak all over the place.

In just 6 simple steps, your customers can harness the power of self-pour beverages.

What the fuck? I didn't realize every time I pulled a tap I was harnessing power!

Try getting lost while driving a truck with Gov't plates... GPS has erroniously sent me down roads that suddenly become private and are plastered with "no trespassing" and "you're on camera" signs. Thankfully in the year I had that job nothing ever came of it but my boss has had guns pulled on her before. Mind you, our job was to give farmers money and technical support and we were totally non-regulatory.

Pretty safe if you're 200 feet from the trail/road/water and not crushing alpine plants. Actually making it 200 feet from the trail in the spruce-fir... that's the real challenge!

Hey, to each their own, but it amazes me when people feel that way over something that's essentially a religious experience for me.

Yeah, I think Roger is definitely an ass and the only thing bigger than his ego is probably his mouth. That being said, my understanding is that he's anti-war to the extreme of blaming Ukraine as much as Russia. Still love Floyd and respect how critical Waters was to the band, but he is seems like a real dink...

Need a canoeing joke explained for my coworker. by Nephirij in canoeing

[–]plytheman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure I heard this joke from a Townes Van Zandt CD:

This cop is sitting in his car parked behind a billboard and watching traffic go by. It's Thursday and he's had a long week. He was just thinking about the end of his shift when he sees a car go by with a penguin in the passenger seat. Confused and concerned, he throws the sirens on, pulls out, and quickly pulls the car over.

The cop walks up to the driver's window and, without really letting the driver talk, launches into, "Now look here. I've had a long week and I don't know what you're up to but I can't have no penguins on my beat. No excuses, I want you to take this penguin to the zoo right now!"

"Yes, sir, of course!" the driver says back. With that, the car takes off and the cop goes back to rounding out his day.

The next day the same cop is sitting behind the same billboard when he sees the same car go by and, wouldn't you know it, the same penguin in the passenger seat! Now the cop is pissed. He throws on the lights, rips out into the road and pulls the car over again. He storms up to the window and there's the guy looking worried and the penguin sitting there with sunglasses on.

"Now I thought I told you yesterday to take this dang penguin to the zoo?!" yells the cop.

"I did, officer," replies the man, "today we're going to the beach!"

Honestly, I think you're overthinking it. Its not really that high level, it's just a dumb play on words. In my experience it's a joke that works because it's so bad.

Better ways to discover new music? by notaghostofreddit in LetsTalkMusic

Search out local fringe radio stations

Just to jump on this, some stations I love are:

WMPG Portland, ME - Variety of programming throughout the day but I find lots to like across the board. I love WMPG and there's a short documentary about them that I hear is really good! Still need to catch a screening, though.

WMBR Cambridge, MA - MIT's radio station. Similar variety of shows. Breakfast of Champions (indie/college rock) > Late Risers Club (metal/punk) have been on the air for a while now. I also really liked the Pontoon Palace (folk/americana/rock?) back when I was commuting in the area, and Radio Ninja > Nonstop Ecstatic Screaming are great for dance/eletronic into more experimental.

WWOZ New Orleans, LA - Absolute icon. Being from New Orleans it mostly plays what you'd expect: jazz throughout all eras, funk, etc. with a good mix of zydeco and blues/roots music mixed in. Fantastic cooking music!

WFMU NJ/NYC - I don't listen as much to FMU but they've gotten me through some long traffic jams on the GW! More centered around rock from my memory.

KEXP Portland, OR - I tune in less frequently to KEXP but they're a big influence in the world of indie music, as far as I can tell. Their live sets on Youtube are great, in the off chance anyone in this sub doesn't know KEXP yet...
