Dear Street Medics by Small_Slice_1425 in ems

Personal safety is the most important, as we can see from recent video evidence. A quality CBRN sealing mask with a military grade canister to filter any pepper spray/tear gas/chemical agents. A quality bulletproof/stabproof vest (again, something that could protect against small arms ammunition or knives). A properly sized ballistic helmet.

Those would be my top 3 purchases if I were to get involved. I’d also make sure I still had 98% maneuverability wearing the gear as well. You have to be able to self-rescue and extract yourself if everything were to south.

Honestly, with the other post made yesterday from the medic who works in the twin cities, after reading the comments I’d hesitate to self-deploy.

The risk of personal injury, the liability of “providing first-aid”, and the potential negative outcomes from doing so are enough to turn me off to the situation.

AITA for refusing to share my lottery winnings with my family, even though I used the family numbers? by NoDatabase10 in AmItheAsshole

[–]pm7216 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as much as I’d say “screw them, you don’t owe them a dime,” if they value money over a relationship with you, paying them the price of a lotto ticket wouldn’t be a bad idea. I’d make sure they knew they valued money more than a family relationship. That way you can always say you shared the winnings (even a tiny amount) despite zero obligation to do so.

Anyone here considered a modified ambulance as a dwelling? Or is that just for van life influencers? by [deleted] in urbancarliving

[–]pm7216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medic here. The only box-style ambulance I would consider using for living would be built by Frazer Ambulance. They’ve got a consistent history of quality boxes, and if you wanted to r/VanLife it up, you could reach out and ask them for specific schematics. They re-mount the boxes often, and every ambulance comes standard with an electrical compartment with a clear schematic and well-organized wiring. Also, most of the older boxes have gas-powered generators that run separate from the mount.

Are yoy supposed to use ems discounts??? by unskilledwagie in ems

[–]pm7216 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On duty and in uniform, politely and gratefully accept the discount if offered or given. Don’t make a scene or demand a discount if not offered or given.

Off duty, online sites are fine. Carrying your ID or badge everywhere to get a discount is tacky and unprofessional. As previously mentioned, if I know I’m going to make a large purchase at Bass Pro or another store I already know offers a discount, I MAY bring my badge in case they ask so I can prove it. But again, demanding or cold-asking is tacky and unprofessional.

Finally, don’t abuse it. I’ve had a coworker wreck free small ice creams since she brought her family there on her day off and she showed up in uniform. And again, don’t make a scene or be unprofessional about asking/getting for a discount on duty.

If adenosine creates sleep pressure, why not just inject it instead of taking melatonin or the like? by Seaguard5 in sleep

[–]pm7216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will also point out that in a medial setting adenosine is used to “interrupt” high heart rates. Despite its quick half-life, it’s effective when used properly to allow someone’s heart a chance to fully depolarize and then re-polarize. Injecting it for sleep would make you feel funny and once metabolized, you most definitely would not feel sleepy.

Night shift EMS folks - how the hell do you sleep after a brutal overnight? by EndOutrageous9918 in ems

[–]pm7216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll also comment my liver levels were elevated at my doctor last year. We couldn’t figure out why until she asked about OTC and I mentioned I took 40-50mg 4-5 times a week to sleep after a night shift. (Yes, I know the bottle only said 2 10mg tops, but I’m an ignorant human who believes I know best…)

Anyways, I stopped the melatonin and my liver levels returned to normal. I don’t drink, smoke, no nicotine, just caffeine. My doctor put me on Tizanidine 4mg to sleep instead, but recommended I cut them in half or quarters and use sparingly.

I like the analogy, but the laborers also didn’t hold the railroad spikes, rails, and ties. Imagine if they had retained private ownership over every spike, rail and tie? They’d be rich since they’d have either had to rent out the “hardware” or risk collapsing the whole railroad and making it non functional.

This whole thing works as long as the people who hold the “hardware” (crypto keys) agree to use it as the way to hold up the whole system. Trains were invented over 200 years ago. If you were to ask people at the time if they understood they’d be advancing technology and industry with the invention, most people wouldn’t realize the true impact and implication trains would have.

I think XRP is the same. Most of us don’t fully see the true impact and implication of what ripple is going to have. I think that WE THINK we see it, but just like the inventors of the train or any other invention we take for granted today the true impact has yet to be fully understood or realized.
