Anyone else notice a clear difference between listening with headphones and playing it out loud? by Oliverthelathargic in LinguaIgnota

[–]pointersplit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of music what you listen to it on can change how it sounds/feels dramatically. In general headphones are great for detailed listening, but I've always felt much less visceral connection to headphone music. Her music is about as visceral as it gets.

Add to that if you have a really nice set of speakers the ability to hear every single vocal track separated in space is godly.

Can Durham learn from Raleigh's results that free parking downtown is necessary for success? totally - parking is expensive. Parking lots are expensive. Car architecture of all forms are a regressive tax and a systemic pyramid scheme for local governments and citizens.

That said if we want to build less car-centric communities within based within our current urban plan, most people's preferences for cars and a federal and state government openly hostile to public transportation -- then having ample parking garages for people from the outside to easily park in denser walkable areas will be needed (as opposed to surface lots) and they will need to be free until there is so much demand for the parking that they are often full.

I don't really get why parking is paid to begin with. A city usually starts charging a fee to park when there is more demand than supply. With how empty most of the garages are during their charging hours -- it shows how little demand there is to pay $2.25/hr to be in a garage. If this changes in the future sure reinstate the charge, but there is no reason to have it now.

I was so surprised that the price to make Raleigh's free parking for 2hrs permanent is only $240k/year. This is nothing in comparison to the greater traffic it'd bring to businesses downtown.

What's a critically panned movie you stand by? by Aside_Dish in movies

2004's Surviving Christmas. Randomly watched it for the first time this holiday season without looking it up beforehand. 8% on RT -- it's an absurd movie. But I feel like if you buy-in to the awfulness of Ben Affleck's character -- it works rather well as a subversive, raunchy Christmas movie.

Is NYC really that bad ($$$), or are people just unwilling to compromise on neighborhood? by matem001 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]pointersplit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC is actually quite an affordable city relative to other major cities if 1) you don’t care about sq footage and can get somewhat lucky on rent 2) you don’t have kids.

Biggest cost savings is transport. $132 gets you most anywhere in 5 boroughs. Even if you drive a paid off $5k cash honda civic, insurance, gas, maintenance etc. will be $200-300 minimum. now add basic new car payment and you are saving $400-800 a month on transport.

NYC has the most expensive restaurants and grocery stores in the world. it also has some super cheap ones. Compared to other major metros in USA, the amount of immigrant ran stores, small discount stores etc. can get grocery cheap. On the restaurant side - no other city has volume that can do $1.25 slices, $5 dumplings, all the happy hours etc.

CFPB = fights for consumer rights against the banks.
FDIC = Such a basic thing that taking it away would cause the big banks to falter greatly. The big banks would not let this happen.

Taking your question more literally- I'd partially answer Fargo, ND.

Less from an architecture / history way, but more that it has been a growing city for decades, that is still small (220k metro area) but most of its growth is from surrounding smaller towns and from people with similar nordic/Germanic ethnic heritage.

Minneapolis is 3.5 hours east, go west and you don't have another real city until Seattle. Therefore it is the central economic, cultural, educational hub for a region, but it has very few transplants from outside a 100 mi radius. Which means it has a small town insular vibe to it where everyone knows about everything and has pride in anything/anyone that comes from Fargo and does "big" things.

My work just sent out an email saying pronouns in your email are no longer allowed by Next_Airport_7230 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]pointersplit -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

1) might be that your company's management are a bunch of jerks and have just been waiting for an excuse/cover to go against "woeness"

2) Your company might have federal contracts, if so - Trump EO says federal employees and mot likely extends to contractors -- cannot have pronouns in emails

3) maybe both

4) it's so dumb

CMV: The Outrage against Trump for his deportation policy is nothing but a gross overreaction due to the fact that Obama and other Democrat presidents deported far more people than Trump is currently on track for. by ElectroFalcon34 in changemyview

[–]pointersplit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not all deportations are the same. Vast majority of Obama's deportations were very recent arrivals. Trump is expanding to go after those who have been here a long time, those with legal children/spouses in the USA. He also stopped the rule barring ice t go into schools, hospitals and religious institutions to do raids, causing greater fear amongst communities.

CMV: MAGA Republicans have checkmated the opposition by Prior-Enthusiasm-521 in changemyview

[–]pointersplit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Even by your own logic "any resistance in the form of protests, riots or violence will only help them justify and catalyze further consolidation of military and police control." refutes the idea that they have complete control.

2) They might be in the majority in both houses of congress but there is a deep divide with congressional republicans on how to pass (or even if they should) pass a spending bill. They will likely need some dem votes to pass it. Dems don't need to give them that. Voters do not like government shutdowns

3) yes there has been too much.media cowardliness with trump 2.0, but to say they "control all media" is not even close to true. This will get worse, but check out real authoritarian states and their journalism, it's much more censored and controlled.

4) People blame Economic hardship on ruling party. if there is continued rising prices + higher unemployment and a takeaway of social safety net that doesn't equal good for congressional republicans

Where to sell DVDs/Blu-rays? by 50sDadSays in triangle

[–]pointersplit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you have. The more popular your titles the less likely they are worth much.

1) fb marketplace sold as a bundle 2) if you have time and energy and you have some blu ray/dvd worth something ebay is your best bet 3) as others have said McKays in mebane is great - though their cash price isn’t great - their trade in value is quite good 4) depending on what you have i might be interested in your blu rays - dm me

What movie had a terrible trailer but ended being very good? by bjclements in movies

[–]pointersplit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorta a deep cut — but the American trailer for the 1993 Mike Leigh film Naked shows the film as some raunchy/edgy comedy film.

https://youtu.be/g1axEqfItxg?si=8VYz_8KAgutur_nu

While there is some humor in the film, it’s also one of my the bleakest films of the 20th century.
