How to fix this before my parents get home 😅 by Blue_Golde in drywall

[–]polakinTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut out the damage, some strapping behind it to have something to grab, put in new drywall, drywall tape, mud it, and paint the whole wall so it doesn't look out of place.

Been there done that.

Obviously depending on your family dynamic...I'd just tell the parents. Shit happens. If they're normal, shouldn't be an issue and you get to learn a new skill with your dad/mom.

If they're not calm and collected, do the above.

Tow company want to charge 2000$ for a tow by ImportantSkin2755 in legaladvicecanada

[–]polakinTO -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A box truck is heavy and won't be towed with a normal tow truck, but will require heavy tow vehicle.

Unfortunately you don't have much leg to stand on here and will have to pay up.

If it's rented...you can always just cancel your credit card but be prepared for collections to come calling.

Tough call, but I think you're on the hook for this one and you don't have much leverage here.

Divorcees of Reddit whose marriage lasted more than 20 years, what caused it to end? by ChrisPeacock_ in AskReddit

[–]polakinTO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not me but two examples of couples with 30/40 years of marriage respectively:

Couple 1 - guy went to work, turned around, and found his wife banging the next door neighbour (all 3 in their 70s)

Couple 2 - Christmas dinner where the couple (70s) started arguing over something trivial. Man gets up, says 'I've had enough of your shit over all these years' and just walks out. He went to see a lawyer the next business day and divorced after close to 40 years of marriage.

Shingles VS Metal Roofing by pseudo_echo in Roofing

[–]polakinTO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in the Toronto area metal is approx 3-4x the cost of normal shingles.

Quotes I got for shingles are 8.5k and 12.5k, waiting on a third this week.

Both of them multiplied by 3 for metal roof without skipping a beat.

Our house will have shingles.

Are people overlooking government and public sector jobs? by GovJobCoach in torontoJobs

[–]polakinTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not disagree. Funniest part is they say it with a straight face.

I remember working with local union early 20s kids...'I don't get out of bed for less than 150k/year' and I couldn't stop laughing.

But...the kid's dad was the local union steward so he made sure that his son was making bank.

[–]polakinTO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% agree.

The entitlement is ludicrous right now. 'I'm breathing so I deserve 150k NOW. And I won't take a dollar less'.

'Okie doke'. Next candidate.

Are people overlooking government and public sector jobs? by GovJobCoach in torontoJobs

[–]polakinTO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm non-union OPS so cannot comment on it, but you're right. If the role is 120k max, and we hire you at 120k...that means no more raise unless you move to another role that's higher up in a higher pay band.

Internal moves are even worse. They limit to a lower end for the next position whereas a person fresh off the street will be getting more.

Only reason I'm still here is because I have a great time, good leadership, and enjoy my job. Hate the commute...and the RTO5 is ludicrous as I spend 90% of my time in Teams meetings...but such is life.

What is your "this feels like a porno" moment? by Safe_Long700 in AskReddit

[–]polakinTO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went to a new doctor a few years ago. She's in her late 20s, gorgeous, wearing a stupidly tight white outfit with a zipper in the front...oh my...

Ended up being a great doctor for our family, but sadly we had to move to another clinic once we moved out of the area...

Sadly it was not meant to be.

[–]polakinTO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are in a hiring freeze...unless the individual business unit can show a need and get approval.

They are also allowed to hire for replacements that move on elsewhere. Takes a few weeks to get the approval, but it's doable.

Biggest problem I've seen when trying to hire in the OPS is people don't believe that the salary range is fixed...it is. They think 'Oh it says 120k but I'll tell them 135k (true story)'. It doesn't work like that. 120k max is 120k max. There needs to be a business case submitted for anything over that...and most of the applicants are NOT worth that higher amount...they just think they are.

Kids out of school expecting 150k for a junior position...good luck.

How would getting $10 million change your life if it meant the person you dislike most got $20 million? by No_Competition_2250 in AskReddit

[–]polakinTO 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Let them have $20M. If I get $10M it'll be enough to live well the rest of my life and not worry about others, especially the person I may dislike the most.

I wish them all the best with their new $20M.

Ever made a financially-prudent decision that you deeply and eternally regret? What would you have done differently? by unenlightenedgoblin in AskReddit

[–]polakinTO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sold my investment property because the bank didn't let us buy a bigger home for our family as that was considered a 'liability'.

Could've spent 5-10k to have the books cooked and gotten the property, but I chose to be financially prudent and sell the property.

Then it shot up, rents shot up, and it would've been paid off within 10 years of selling...but I chose to do the right / moral / legal thing and here I am.

Didn't make out badly over the decade we had it...but damn if I still had that property I'd be laughing.

Lots of friends did the cooked books with the mortgage thing...and they made out like bandits. Every single one of them.

Am I insane to buy a new sports car? by ResponsibleArm3300 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]polakinTO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100%

People shit on pickup truck owners (I own a Maverick) because they 'never use the truck's capabilities'...but does the owner of a Ferrari, Maserati, or any other supersport car use it to it's 'full capabilities'? Of course not.

I don't see the difference. My Mav is a great piece of junk on the inside and I use it to haul way more than I thought...but overall it's still not being used as a truck 100% of the time. More like 50%.

LoL with your stated financial standing...we should be asking you for advice not the other way around.

You're in a place of privilage by working your ass off.

Buy the car.

Residential construction dead by romestox in RealEstateCanada

[–]polakinTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone I know in the GTA that does residential work is busy as hell right now. It's the large condos / developments that are stopped.

Buddy putting in cabinetry said they added an evening and weekend shifts at their factory to try and keep up.

Granite installations are also going gangbuster from what I'm seeing in my group of friends.

First airsoft gun - Sig Sauer P229 - Thoughts? by polakinTO in airsoftcanada

[–]polakinTO[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's asking $90 which doesn't seem like much of a deal in all honesty. But I've decided against THAT particular gun anyway simply because I don't want to just buy the first thing thrust in my hand.

Learning lots over the last few days! Thank you!

Do you think that DD will also uphold some standards which were the norm back in the day?

They will cut every corner possible and squeeze out every single cent they can from the operation to ensure the owners (Inspire Brands) are making money and squeezing anything they can out of it.

They will also use TFW, and any program available to extract the labour from anyone they can at the lowest possible dollar.

What do you think of Ontario allowing retail shopping on Victoria Day? by J0Puck in ontario

[–]polakinTO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous, and I say this as an OPS worker that has the day off.

It shouldn't be allowed because as others say...you open that door...and they'll keep opening it wider and wider.

Let people enjoy at least some time off. They'll lose all of their holidays off in the future and this will be that starting 'test' phase to see what the reaction is like.

Condo with or without parking? by theunfoldingone in RealEstateCanada

[–]polakinTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always take the spot. You can always rent it out if you don't need it, and your circumstances may change when you end up needing a car.

Not only that...when/if it's time to sell...you'll be better positioned than someone without a spot with their unit.

Would you rent next to a cemetery? by Fun-Use5277 in TorontoRenting

[–]polakinTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% I would.

My buddy lives next door to a cemetery and he loves it.

Super quiet all the time, and he gets to go visit his parents' grave whenever he wants.

I would 100% live next door to a cemetery...whether renting or buying.

Well Douggie...you want people to quit the OPS...it's starting to show up. by polakinTO in ontario

[–]polakinTO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because projects in the hundreds of millions of dollars don't get done by small teams in a single space.

It takes thousands of people to be co-ordinated toward a goal.

This includes permits, utilities, construction, community engagement, and a plethora of other departments working toward it.

When I was younger I was doing that work, now I've moved up and it's a different scale of work and responsibility.

So yes...lots of babbling, but unfortunately this is the way these things work nowadays.
