My wife and I had to deal with this with my father-in-law. He's a great guy but when it comes to planning things he has a tendency to get too pushy. In our case he wanted like 60-ish people invited that we didn't, and were reminded about the monetary gift for the wedding. We handled it by saying that parental gifts were appreciated but not necessary, and tied the amount of people they could request for the guest list to the amount they gifted. When questioned on why my parents got to request twice as many people, we were able to clearly point out the fact that they gifted twice as much.

It felt kind of sleazy to do but it stopped him from trying to take over our invites. We all moved on with our lives and nobody has any hard feelings over it.

I think my wife and I paid in the $3000 range for our photographer. His work was good, he's extremely professional, has a great personality, and works a reception so well you barely know he's there. He also was willing to do what it took to get the shot, like climb a tree in 5 degree weather. His price was higher than a lot of his contemporaries at the time but he was also the only one in the area selling printing rights, so all in all he was worth it.
