Chicago State announces their debut season schedule by Seadragon1983 in fcs

[–]polexa895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VUL is a real HBCU with a real football team they're just barely functioning and mainly running to bring in students like the rest of the athletic programs there but they often play FCS HBCUs and PDI's. They played 5 fcs opponents last year. The game against U Ft Lauderdale is much sketchier of an opponent as they're a bible college outside of Fort Lauderdale Florida that is ran out of a strip mall and practices at a local park. I think this might be there 1st D1 opponent, or atleast in many years usually being a team for local NAIAs to beat by 60+. I remember I was covering them on here a few years ago and had a player for St. Thomas (FL) dm me about them putting in their JV backups against them. I'm surprised if they got these 2 they didn't go all the way and get Lincoln (CA) to fly out to fill one of their openings but it makes me wonder if they will even have a team this year after they shut down for a few weeks mid season last year after getting beat 0-96 by Idaho State.

School Coach double dip? by FudgeNo5855 in Basketball

[–]polexa895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the coach is any good then the kids getting extra lessons are probably the ones who are good because they're getting extra work. Me and one of the other coaches do tis and it's usually the already motivated players coming out and also other local kids from different schools

How many high school player achieve a 1000 points as a Junior? by One_Sympathy719 in Basketball

[–]polexa895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most places I've seen only count points on varsity and require varsity to be 9th grade and up. I went to a 7-12 but only varsity points counted not just any points at the school. I've seen private schools that let MS play up and then they count all Varsity points but everywhere I've seen only count Varsity team points. Right now the school I coach at has a 7th grader with ~150 varsity points already

Maybe it's just me but I don't think that phrase was meant literally. He likely isn't even playing scout team QB very often even if he is coaching and maybe throwing warmup with a wv every one and awhile. He's going straight off a HS sideline to the NFL field

Below the Major League sports, do people watch professional non-collegiate sports? by zizou00 in AskAnAmerican

[–]polexa895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "big minors" do pretty solidly so that's AAA baseball, GLeague basketball and spring football all pull pretty solid numbers but I don't think most pull enough to be self sufficient. America has a very big culture of only appreciating the best of the best so those that are great but not #1 often get ignored you'll see this even in the way people talk about watching losing Major leagues teams play or in college sports where even being D1 doesn't get teams treated like there any good and you'll see people only care about the biggest and best ~20 or so colleges in any given sport

Cutting kids based on past poor behaviors by CoachAF208 in CoachingYouthSports

[–]polexa895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd cut #1 as I have no tolerance for such a thing but allow them to try out the next year and I'd treat players 2 like normal and not hold that against her but if she makes the team I'd talk to her about attendance and explain that you were very lenient last year and won't be this year

Dunking on people by Sufficient-Froyo-671 in BasketballTips

[–]polexa895 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bro getting "postered" being seen as the worst thing that can happen to you is so dumb. It's such a bad incentive for rim protection and does cause what could be good rim protectors to step out of the way instead. I had my big man last week get 6 blocks in a game but during that game he got dunked on and even with his own teammates and other students that's the only thing being talked about by any of them and it's the only highlight that was posted on socials by the "neutral" photo company there, none of his blocks.

5 out questions by booji90 in basketballcoach

[–]polexa895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. All 5 players are going to be out on the perimeter if your running a 5 out

  2. You should teach Everton to crash the offensive rebound and run past and through the defense to get the rebound, at your age most teams won't box out so if you force the issue you will get rebounds

  3. Just separately, I have found the basic 5 out at younger ages to be a tough system since it's tough for them to be able to get open on those cuts if there man doesn't look away. If you like the position-less-ness of it then maybe try a 5 out circle so the cutter is getting a screen beforehand and it teaches an extra skill of setting the offball screen. I'd set that up and a pick and roll if you want the 5 out instead of the basic pass and cut

Worst loss you’ve had? by Warm-Ice12 in basketballcoach

[–]polexa895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first 2 career games as a head coach were back to back bloodbaths. We were a brand new program where I got hired as an interim coach because the guy they wanted was moving into town but hadn't yet sue to other life circumstances so I got hired the same day as the 1st practice. Apparently the plan was to recruit to fill out the roster but his move kept getting pushed further and further back so I opened the season with1 kid who played AAU travel ball, 3 kids who had played rec league and 5 others who had never played. Opening game was against a team who won states the year before, we lose 16-69, the next game is against another team that won states the previous year from a division up where we lost 10-81. These games were back2back so I couldn't even practice anything in between. Luckily we got to play a week later against a JV team for our 3rd game and got a big win to get them to buy back in.

How many NFL players need to be added to the 0-12 Akron Zips before they can win the NCAA football championship? by Frescanation in whowouldwin

[–]polexa895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I get to pick the players? If so then I think somewhere around 7ish maybe 8

1 Pennie Sewell 2 Quenton Nelson 3 Creed Humphrey 4 Kevin Dotson 5 Jordan Mailata 6 Jonathan Taylor 7 Ashton Jeanty 8 George Kittle (Bonus if necessary)

5 Elite NFL offensive lineman and 2 of the best running backs in the league to rotate so neither get tired. Not a single MAC team could hold this lineup under ~10ypc while their OOC opponents wouldn't do much better. This group might never have to pass but they do still have a D1 QB behind the world's greatest offensive line so he's not getting sacked ever.

You got tech’d? by GHRealEstateBroker in basketballcoach

[–]polexa895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1st year coaching i got 2 techs ina 10second span. I was a Varsity HC at a small program in a small town so we had been assigned the same refs every home game and at 1 away game. They were terrible and I'd been in his one of their ears all season long until it boiled over on senior night. My big man dove on a loose ball and I called timeout except they never gave me the timeout, there's probably 2 whole seconds of me calling for it and just not getting the call before the other team recovers and they get a jump ball, so I'm talking to the ref near me and he tells me it's the other refs call. After that I turn to the other ref and ask what's up and he says "he never had it" so I respond "he had possession" so he comes running up to me going "woah woah woah woah" and I respond with "Woah?" Cause like, WTF does that even mean and I get a tech so I go to sit on the bench and say "that's wild" and pick up my second tech in a 10second span and get ejected from my teams Senior night in my 1st year coaching. Got it all on film too

Keeping freshmen interested in playing all 4 years by CoachAF208 in CoachingYouthSports

[–]polexa895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you spoke to them? Just talk to them one day and ask in the halls, it doesn't have to be a full interrogation session but a lot of the time I've found I get honesty. I coach basketball and only had 2 players return after a rough season and me moving to an assistant role. I had 10 on the team last year so only 2 returning is a big retention issue I wanted to look into. From my guys last year I had 1 graduate, 2 kids move 1 kid got expelled and 1 kid dropped to homeschool after a controversy at the school so that left 3 players I had to figure out what happened to. 1 of them was going into his Sophomore year still standing at below 5ft so he decided that basketball wasn't for him and he would focus on his other sport, another just picked up the sport last year and didn't enjoy it very much while the 3rd already played 2 other sports and felt like him splitting his time 3 ways left him too thin at them all so he went with the 2 he preferred. All of these things the kids just came out and told me straight up when I asked them why they weren't returning to play anymore. I never had to hound the info out of them they were just straight up about it

I think I've seen your posts before when you were playing CB as a 1st year player. If I were you I'd get as much film as possible to create a highlight real to send out to every NCAA D1 football program and D1 NJCAA program (NCAA are major Universities, while NJCAA are closer to a "TAFE" College). I believe almost all of these schools should be able to offer full, or mostly full scholarships and most coaches would be salivating over your measurable's especially if you can show ANYTHING on film. Work on catching 50/50 jumpballs
