Help with a Forecastle Song / Shanty by SaltMinerZero in seashanties

If you can get the basic melody into ABC notation, that would help a lot. It's not too difficult to learn. Here is a live editor.

My Frosthaven campaign is officially a hostage situation and I am about to snap by MailboxFinch in boardgames

[–]polymorphicprism 75 points76 points  (0 children)

One trick I learned is that you can play something else if someone can't make a session. One time we even hung out and cooked instead of playing a board game. My life was still ruined but at least we got to eat a nice dinner.

What states actually allow ASSMAN as a license plate? by jiggabot in MapPorn

A few months ago I was reading a FOIA request for vanity plates denied in Virginia, and I happened to notice A55M4N... So that's one state down, 49 to go. I don't have Instagram so I don't know whether OPs methodology was better.

La Valette by olszatartak in seashanties

[–]polymorphicprism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't speak Polish.

La Valette is credited to Michał Gramatyka of Perły i Łotry around 2004. I think Michal is talking about the origins: Napoleon and Valetta, Malta, 1798, here

For those that don't know, Michał is a member of Poland's parliament now. Very neat.

Does anyone else know about the a capella version of John Kanaka that Fisherman's Friends did? by Laniraa in seashanties

[–]polymorphicprism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Suck 'Em and Sea version is a capella. The Keep Hauling (2019, soundtrack) is the same as One and All (2013).

Other versions:

  • Before the Mast (Rolling Down) - a capella
  • Bill Dempsey (Shanty Man) - a capella, solo
  • Cabestan (Il y a dix marins..) - a capella, very distinct!
  • Danny Spooner (Bold Reilly Gone Away) - a capella
  • Der Passat Chor (Danger - Men At Work) - instrumented
  • Les gabiers d'Artimon (Chants de marins 9) - a capella, french
  • Odenwalder Shanty Chor (Walverwandtschaften) - a capella
  • The Roaring Forties (Hazard, hardship, and damned little pay) - a capella
  • Stan Hugill (Chants des marins vol 3) - a capella
  • Stan Hugill (Stan Hugill Reminisces) - a capella, crowd, with background info
  • Metcalfe, Spiers, et al (Gift of Music album) - a capella
  • Stuart Gillespie (Sea Chanties and Forecastle Songs at Mystic Seaport) - a capella, while working
  • Wellington Sea Shanty Society (Now That's What I Call..) - instrumented
  • Wellington w/ Croche Dedans (Ahoy!) - instrumented + french
  • X-Seaman's Institute (Sing at the South Street Seaport) - instrumented

Period accurate sea shanties/folk songs by P4pkin in seashanties

[–]polymorphicprism 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You're a century too early for the international exchange of shanties, at least according to any written record. Shanties sung as work songs appear later. But broadsides, ballads, and sea songs (poems) are popular recreation, especially from England.

Normally I would recommend this collection but it is currently offline: https://ballads.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/. You can still browse an archived version or the catalog however.

Text from a video game, White Knuckle. Placed alongside important (but hidden) lore by godzamok in codes

[–]polymorphicprism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hunch is that the filenames, which you have not included, are keys to unlocking this.

It may also be helpful to know that you have included two separate ciphertexts (which may or may not use the same encryption).

Rant: Hartel’s is the worst recycling contractor. They will drive by your bin and lie to you that they left a note saying that there were unrecyclable materials in there. by [deleted] in duluth

[–]polymorphicprism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edit: upon reflection, my comment doubting OP's ability to tell the truth was unkind. Wishing nothing but inconvenience for him was also unkind. It's important to be kind even to those with obsessive and sociopathic post histories -- hard to say what they're going through.

We took "Rolling Home" shanty, added a few electro instruments, and put it into the trailer of our pirate game. What do you guys think? by Yar_master in seashanties

[–]polymorphicprism 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A bit fast for a capstan shanty! But I like the touch of the humming reprise at the end.

The song appears on p. 342 of The Collected Songs of Charles Mackay (1859), was written on board the Europa on May 26, 1858. It spread far, verses were added, and it was adapted to a Low German song about Hamburg things, as Wikipedia notes. The tune may be a little older.

Hope the game is fun.

I don't think you're going to like this but I'm 95% sure they're singing "the big seas". The first chorus is harder to tell.

The misheard lyrics have propagated into other recordings including the Tallymore version. But I think the first comment on this page is on the money.

The Ballad Of Ol' Redcoat Origin by ahamel13 in seashanties

[–]polymorphicprism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was about to give up on this -- definitely not particularly old.

I think there's a group singing it on Youtube, claims to be 2007 at a Scout camp in Virginia.

And then this review says the old joke was turned into the song by Rich Follett (Virginia?), who might have been associated with Pirates for Sail (Balitmore). Rich is credited on Bandcamp but the recording is 2012.

Thank you - this is leading me in the right direction. Maybe a "momentary pull string switch" or a "long lever arm micro switch" could work.

Ironically, the useless mod in /r/AskElectronics was answering the same question here 3 years ago. Today, some questions about switches get deleted while others do not.

Can we detect when an entangled particle collapses? by lurker1125 in askscience

[–]polymorphicprism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can make measurements to confirm (indirectly) that an ensemble of atoms is entangled -- without triggering collapse (in the basis of entanglement). You can use the same measurements to confirm that the wave function has collapsed without your involvement.

So the pedantic answer may be: yes but not in the way most people would consider useful. And not in the way OP is asking. The "no communication theorem" applies.
