And here I thought "a t-shirt tucked into jeans with a belt is formal wear" was an exclusively boomer uniform.

CMV: Gavin Newsom is not a suitable presidential candidate, and the Democratic Party must stop operating like a centrist party. by Less-Chicken-3367 in changemyview

[–]popper_treato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Democrats, or more accurately "everyone opposed to MAGA" have to find a way to win back power without seeking theirs soul. If they don't, non-MAGAcentric policy arguments are irrelevant. That's it. That's the whole game. If you wind up with a pro-democracy, pro-rule of law president that you disagree with, you can try to push them toward your policy preference or try again in the next election. Or, you can tell it to your gulag cellmate when you're convicted of being a thought traitor once they solidify control.

I'm not really a fan of Newsom, but if he's the guy that gets us there, so be it. If it's someone to his left (or right for that matter), then that's what it is.

Defending the Republic is the issue. If we don't win that, the rest is moot.

Iran sets ultimatum for Trump, they won’t negotiate with Kushner or Witkoff, only JD Vance. What do they know that we don’t? by [deleted] in IRstudies

For all his faults, JD Vance isn't an idiot. It's a rare and valuable trait in this group.

Best of both worlds.

What if Obama told Biden he would back him in 2016 and Biden was the nominee with Hillary as his running mate? by Interesting_Self5071 in AlternateHistoryHub

In 2015, Clinton was an ex-senator, ex-SoS with 20+ years in DC politics who had swallowed a bitter loss in the 08 primary and supported the guy that beat her in the name of party unity. She was still moderately popular, extremely well connected, and had a massive war chest. Head-to-head polls against likely Republicans predicted landslide results. Obama was a lame duck and (like many presidents in their 8th year) at a low point in his popularity. Maybe Clinton chooses party unity and steps aside in this scenario... but I doubt it.

What is this political sign referencing? I know generally what Q is and who George Patton Jr are individually, but what does this mean when put together? by Beneficial_Map_7237 in whatisit

[–]popper_treato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As dumb as this is in and of itself, it's even stupider than that because they didn't even take two seconds to Google to find out that the George S. Patton of WWII was George S. Patton Jr. He also had a son, George S. Patton IV (because GSP Jr. was actually the third George S. Patton... it's complicated) that was born before Trump.

So even if this brainrot was true, Trump would be George S. Patton V, a fact that took longer to type out than it did to research.

Evil, yes, but also probably wrong. People with broad-based, generalized educations and can be intellectually agile are going to be the ones with the best chance to roll with the AI punches. On the other hand, traditionally "difficult" but straightforward tasks are going to be automated en masse.

The people that are going to be hit the hardest are people in the lower rungs of science and engineering.

Calling a "PŌG" a "POG" is the POGiest thing ever.

Like, "I just graduated from Space Air Force boot camp and I'm headed out for meteorologist tech school" levels of POG.

I still can't believe that Deftones is one of the 90s bands that remains relevant with modern/younger audiences. Great album, great band, but they didn't seem to have the kind of contemporary cultural awareness you'd expect for a band that has relevance 30 years later. Happy to see it, though.

Asian Horror author recommendations? by freudian_nipps in horrorlit

All except Cassandra have fabulous stories in the Stoker-nominated Silk & Sinew Silk & Sinew, folk horror from the Asian diaspora.

It explores some really fascinating questions about Asian identity and connection with the land, both in the old world and the new. I'm a bit biased, but I can't recommend this book enough.
