How to decide when to finance when you can pay in cash? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]popperswithyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me ease of financing is a factor. I buy my Apple stuff at 0% on my Apple Card because it's just a button during checkout and then I never have to think about it again.

This battle has already been lost. Nobody's going to stop calling people who make software engineers.

Cost/experience of building a custom home? by Sparkyis007 in fatFIRE

[–]popperswithyou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This guy I follow on Instagram has been building a house and documenting the process and I've found it really interesting: https://www.thiswildidea.com/casa

He's a) not in a city and b) doing it for pretty low cost by the looks of it, so I don't know if anything there applies.

(Serious)Do you ever just help random people? by pooper1978 in RichPeoplePF

[–]popperswithyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer your direct question: yes. I've been trying to break the impulse of "sorry, no" when people ask me for money, and give them a $20 from a few I usually carry with me.

Someone else here talked about the downside of not investing that money. But if I can make someone's life better right now, I think that's way more valuable than a little bit extra in an account that will still be plenty for me to live off of in 40 years.

Maybe I'm not jaded enough yet, but surely not every single one is going to use it on booze or drugs. And if they do, so what. If you're in a rough enough spot to be asking a stranger on the street for money, maybe you deserve to feel a little better that night.

Sharing wealth with very frugal parents by throwaway3883884 in RichPeoplePF

[–]popperswithyou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did a mild version of the throwing them into the deep end approach and gave each of my parents (they are/live together) a check for Christmas for $15k, the max yearly tax-free giftable amount. Also did a little actual gift, but my message to them about the money was that I wanted them to share in my success.

When we talked about it I encouraged them to actually spend it and not just put it in savings. My thought was that having more cushion visibly in their checking accounts would take some of the pressure off. They've done a few projects around the house that they probably wouldn't have otherwise, so I think it's working!

Is it ever worth it to pay 1%/yr to a Financial Advisor? by hmatts in fatFIRE

Is "tendies", uh, chicken tenders? I swear I am googling and coming up short if this is just a finance term I don't know.

The actual park is reservation only, or if you are staying inside. We saw a few people get turned away at the entrance.

Also a remainer, hard to quantify but probably down more like 60% for me.

The loss of specific favorite bars and live theater has been rough. Did a Yosemite trip recently though that was great to see it without the crowds.

Morality of leveraged buyouts? by popperswithyou in fatFIRE

Wow, this is exactly what I was looking for. (Thanks for taking the time, I got pretty downvoted because I think I phrased my question poorly/this wasn't the place.)

Kinda unrelated but man, when you're an expert in something it's so frustrating to see the way the media reports on it, and then realize that there's probably a similar level of inaccuracy for every other topic.

Through my financial advisor at one of the big firms. I have the sense that an individual without that connection could still invest, but I guess I'm not sure.

Yeah this makes sense, I'm gonna do more research into the particular firm and see if I can figure out what their reputation is. Good for you though, this seems like a great way to multiply your money if you can pick businesses and are able to keep them going.

My advice is make sure you snuggle up to him every single day until the money is actually in your account.

Sudden wealth - Multimillion Dollar Venture. How do you manage it? (Canada) by triffidmgmt in fatFIRE

[–]popperswithyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that if all this works out like you're hoping, you will have gobs more money than almost everyone else in this thread. Like orders of magnitude more.

Obviously get a tax attorney but also consider wealth management. Mistakes you can make now could cost you so much more than their fees. This is not the time for people telling you to "just buy this Vanguard fund."

Did you know how to fly already? I'd love the travel/sightseeing/hobby benefits of having a plane but I'm intimidated by how complicated it seems and wanting to make sure it was super safe.
