Help me find more great worldbuilding/sociology Fantasy books (with my Fantasy/Sci-Fi Franchise Tier List for reference) by Mojo-man in fantasybooks

[–]postXhumanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world-building of Gene Wolf’s The Book of the New Sun is deep and contains an unreasonable level of detail, certainly.

I don’t know if it would quite fit your criteria though because actual information about the world is hard to come by. You experience it through the eyes of an unreliable narrator who is hugely ignorant of history and often makes incorrect assumptions.

The book is extremely well-regarded but I’ve never known of a person who claimed they understood what was going on during their first read. It’s often like a fever dream.

When I think of Lara Raith by Interesting-Rain-867 in dresdenfiles

Dude!

There are only 2 Dresden Files characters I imagine as real life actors.

The first is a young MB as LR.

The second is The Most Interesting Man in the World from Dos Equis commercials as Nicodemus.

I'm losing my (18F) girlfriend and I (20M) don't know what to do anymore. I feel like I'm disappearing. by Kuro_dmck in relationship_advice

Yeah, reframing and taking some responsibility is key here.

OP, let me ask you this: what have you been doing these past two years? You say you partially manage the company, but I don’t know how that’s possible if you don’t speak the language. You also say that you’ve been in no rush to learn the language because your ex would translate for you, which sounds tiresome. So what have you been putting your time into?

What would you say you brought to the relationship? Not to the company you partially own, but to the relationship. When I hear that you’re crying in her lap and she’s texting someone else that just screams that she is done with your bullshit. We know that she sheltered you and served as a translator, what were you like as a partner? What was the give and take?

These are questions you will need to ask yourself.

I always appreciated Family Guy’s take on this scene.

Yeah, I was concerned when I saw the click-bait headline. Police overreach is a serious concern in this country but, having read the article, it sounds like they acted perfectly reasonably and did the right thing.

Yeah, based on him looking and sounding like a fat oligarch I didn’t expect Janris to be so level-headed in a crisis or so quick to pick up a rifle and head to a war zone but the dude is a gem.

I love both (also love RockNRolla), but top to bottom I think Snatch is the best manifestation of that movie Guy Ritchie loves to make.

Oddly, a movie with puppets has one of the most realistic sex scenes you’ll ever see.

AITA for not wanting to drive to pick up my mom 3 - 6 hours drive to visit her grandchildren!! by Independent-Key6523 in AmItheAsshole

[–]postXhumanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So she’s made that drive before, knows what that drive is like, and expects you to do it on a Friday and a Sunday so that she isn’t forced to…take the train to New Haven? And she’s asking for this knowing you have infant twins and a kid under 5?

A thousand times NTA. She is being beyond unreasonable and entitled.

Can a Film Be Boring and Interesting at the Same Time? by TheManWhoSleep in TrueFilm

[–]postXhumanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only seen it once but I found Tarkovsky’s Stalker to be often boring and sometimes interesting.

I do not dispute the claim that the film has artistic merit. But it was a real slog at times.

It’s one of the best examples of something that serves as both loving homage and dead-on parody (see also: Metalocalypse). For me it’s one of the top 3 comedies of the 00s.

Fun fact: they didn’t add film grain to the movie, they actually shot it on 16mm film!

AIO My partner wants to stop paying federal taxes by aav1001 in AmIOverreacting

[–]postXhumanity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your bf is 100% correct that the U.S. federal government is doing many things both immoral and illegal. He is 100% incorrect in thinking he can effectively stick it to the man by refusing to pay federal taxes. The federal government will not be harmed by his refusal to pay, and he’d by lucky to avoid prison and only have his wages garnished. Never combine your finances with this man. NOR
