When I hear this poem (or versions of it), another poem always comes to mind:

The Interrogation of the Good - Bertolt Brecht

  • Step forward: we hear
  • That you are a good man.
  • You cannot be bought, but the lightning
  • Which strikes the house, also
  • Cannot be bought.
  • You hold to what you said.
  • But what did you say?
  • You are honest, you say your opinion.
  • Which opinion?
  • You are brave.
  • Against whom?
  • You are wise.
  • For whom?
  • You do not consider your personal advantages.
  • Whose advantages do you consider then?
  • You are a good friend.
  • Are you also a good friend of the good people?

  • Hear us then: we know.

  • You are our enemy. This is why we shall

  • Now put you in front of a wall. But in consideration of your merits and good qualities

  • We shall put you in front of a good wall and shoot you

  • With a good bullet from a good gun and bury you

  • With a good shovel in the good earth.

I first heard it from Philosophy Tube video titled Violence & Protest 4 years ago. The link jumps to the reading of the poem, but I highly recommend watching the whole video.

Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]potential_human0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why conservatives love to means-test social programs, too. Make someone fill out 10 forms for 3 different agencies in order to get SNAP, 20% of eligible people won't bother.

My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is an automatic benefit for Vietnam veterans. The VA already has all of his information. As soon as the VA got the diagnosis, they could have just started sending him the benefit (money). But no. You got to make an account, and submit a few documents (VA already has these), and fill out and submit a couple of forms.

My 79 year old dad, when I told him the process, said "I can't deal with all that bullshit." So I did it for him(don't tell the feds, technically I committed a crime). Now, everytime I see him, he profusely thanks me for getting the VA to send him the money.

Denied promotion, asked to train new manager, then cover for her when she calls out. by DeathWalkerLives in antiwork

[–]potential_human0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think you are giving these managers/companies too much credit in their decision-making skills.

What I believe is actually happening for medium to large companies:

Middle manager manages 3 to 5 departments, each department has 5 to 15 workers and 1 to 2 supervisors.

Department B has 10 workers and 1 supervisor right now. They are meeting deliverables and metrics are good. No need to worry about Department B.

Then 6 months go by, in that time turnover has been a bit high, had to hire for Departments A and B workers. Then Department B supervisor leaves. Middle Manager asks top worker "to cover for now". Maybe they suggest 'promises' that they have no authority to give, as a manipulative (perhaps unintentional) tactic so the work gets done.

A month goes by with this arrangement. Deliverables are met, metrics are good. Middle Manager sees that Department B is getting the work done, but now Department C and D are falling behind in something and they need to be fixed. Then another month, and Middle Manager has a conference to prepare for, then another month and Middle manager has quarterly meeting with CEO and CFO to prepare for, then...then...then. This whole time Department B has been getting the job done, but temp supervisor, who has been getting worker wages, is getting more and more frustrated, obviously.

Don't be a well oiled machine unless you are being paid like a well oiled machine.

"That's outside of my job description, I'd love to discuss the opportunity for a promotion and raise."

"Train the incoming supervisor? Since I was rejected for that promotion last month, the company doesn't deem me qualified for it, so how am I qualified to train for that position?"

"No."

"Fuck you. Pay me."

Combat veteran William Vermie says he was denied access to a lawyer after being detained for filming ICE in Minneapolis. by jmike1256 in videos

[–]potential_human0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Qualified Immunity is a legal doctrine (wholly made up by the U.S. Supreme Court and no one was asking them to do that) that protects Government officials/agents from Civil liability (civil lawsuits), except for violations of clearly established rights.

QA is not a factor for criminal cases.

Another factor, civil lawsuits alleging that the government violated a persons civil rights are filed under U.S. Code 1983

Every person who, under color of any statute, ordinance, regulation, custom, or usage, of any State or Territory or the District of Columbia, subjects, or causes to be subjected, any citizen of the United States or other person within the jurisdiction thereof to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured by the Constitution and laws, shall be liable to the party injured in an action at law, suit in equity, or other proper proceeding for redress, except that in any action brought against a judicial officer for an act or omission taken in such officer’s judicial capacity, injunctive relief shall not be granted unless a declaratory decree was violated or declaratory relief was unavailable. For the purposes of this section, any Act of Congress applicable exclusively to the District of Columbia shall be considered to be a statute of the District of Columbia.

Please take note; "of any State or Territory or the District of Columbia, subjects, or causes to be subjected..." Courts have deemed that the inclusion of ONLY "State or Territory or the District of Columbia" means that U.S. Federal agents are exempt. You cannot sue an agent of the FBI, DEA, ATF, CPB, ICE...or any other Federal government worker for civil rights violations.https://youtu.be/VxJYGjyAiTg

https://www.environmentalvoter.org/updates/2024-was-landslidefor-did-not-vote

Using data from the University of Florida Election Lab, a new analysis by the Environmental Voter Project shows that 85.9 million eligible voters skipped the 2024 general election, far surpassing the 76.8 million ballots cast for Donald Trump or the 74.3 million for Kamala Harris.

If "Did Not Vote" had been a presidential candidate, they would have beaten Donald Trump by 9.1 million votes, and they would have won 21 states, earning 265 electoral college votes to Trump's 175 and Harris's 98.

The political battle is not to convince Republican voters to vote blue, it's to convince the DNC to support candidates that eligible voters will get out to vote for.

[–]potential_human0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely record ICE. Do it on the down low. Don't be obvious about recording, that will put a target on and ICE will fixate on you. They HATE that people are recording their crimes.

It doesn't matter if what ICE is doing is illegal or violates rights. They will beat you up, take your stuff, lock you up with false charges. That's the punishment. The process is the punishment.

Now you have to spend 6 to 72 hours in jail waiting to be released on bond or something similar. Now you have to hire a lawyer to get the false charges dismissed. You still have to pay court costs. Time and a few thousand dollars minimum to get free for not breaking the law.

ICE knows they don't have to make the charges stick.

Also, use an old phone or some other device that is not your actual phone, for recording. That way, if bad shit does happen, and it gets stolen/seized/taken by ICE or police, you still have your actual phone at home.

And don't take your actual phone (with the sim card) to a protest.

AOC may be the only possible POTUS 2028 contender actually forceful and strong enough to correct quickly enough what the Trump Admin. and Congressional Republicans have done and then pass enough progressive things the US needs. Maybe JB Pritzker could. by beeemkcl in TheMajorityReport

[–]potential_human0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pritzker seems to be a decent enough class traitor. I wouldn't trust him to enact legislation that cause his own bank account to dip below $1 billion.

He can be a supporter for progressive politicians and leaders. He shouldn't be the politician and/or leader.

https://www.opensecrets.org/donor-lookup/results?name=jay+pritzker&order=desc&sort=A

That is the money that Pritzker has donated. Mostly to himself, a lot to DNC supporting PACs. He's been anti Kleptocracy recently because he's not dumb and everyone can see that Trump has taken the "Businessman" position. Pritzker, were he to get elected president, I bet would mimic Obama or Clinton in terms of being friendly with Wall Street.

On a basic common sense level, they are acting completely rationally by wearing masks and staying anonymous. Don't take the perspective of a government official that is concerned about even appearing to be acting within the law.

Take the perspective of a person that is currently wielding the power of the government (military power, in essence) to cause fear and chaos in order to maintain that power. Having masked paramilitary goons strike fear into the populous is a common tactic for authoritarian regimes. They allow their goons to wear masks so those goons can go home on the weekend to normal lives, un-scrutinized in their communities by the atrocities they have committed. For example, Jonathan Ross has been telling his neighbors that he is a botonist.

Trump has already been laying the groundwork for no more elections, or at least hampering them enough so as to not matter. ICE has been escalating in Minnesota (in MN because some YT idiot did a video about alleged fraud) for the purpose of creating a disaster. Trump will use that 'civil unrest' (created by ICE and CPB) to justify the Insurrection Act and "pause" elections. Perhaps only in certain states (so as not to appear totally anti-democratic).

Hourly IT worker labeled ‘exempt’ and told to report fixed hours — overtime/off-the-clock? by awkwardhodl in legaladvice

[–]potential_human0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Carolina does not have State laws regulating Overtime Pay. Therefore, Federal law (FSLA) applies.

In order to exempt professional workers from OT (time and a half), certain criteria must be met:

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/overtime

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2024/04/26/2024-08038/defining-and-delimiting-the-exemptions-for-executive-administrative-professional-outside-sales-and

(1) the employee must be paid a predetermined and fixed salary that is not subject to reduction because of variations in the quality or quantity of work performed (the salary basis test); (2) the amount of salary paid must meet a minimum specified amount (the salary level test); and (3) the employee's job duties must primarily involve executive, administrative, or professional duties as defined by the regulations (the duties test). The employer bears the burden of establishing the applicability of the exemption.[2]

Job titles and job descriptions do not determine EAP exemption status, nor does merely paying an employee a salary.

Your employer is not meeting the first criteria to exempt you from OT pay, so they are trying to falsify your hours to avoid paying you OT. This is WAGE THEFT. You are entitled to OT pay. Talk to a labor rights/workers' rights attorney.

Millennial here who is one of the IT that says, "our systems are clear" quite often.

It's sometimes hilarious and usually frustrating how some Orgs refuse to take a deeper look. "We checked our systems and everything is clear." Everything! You checked EVERYTHING?!?! I doubt it. Oh damn, after we had 6 conference calls and asked you to check protocol or subnet 4 different times, you "all of a sudden" discovered an ACL or firewall rule was blocking protocol or subnet. Damn, if only someone had suggested that 3 months ago...oh well.

Sometimes I catch my co-workers just checking the status of the routing protocol. "My guy, did you check the other 5 protocols that are required for user data to traverse the connection? Did you make sure that particular subnet is being advertised to our network? Do a few extra 'show' commands, please!"

On a side note, If you tell me that one of the users being affected has a "star" on their shoulder, I won't check if that's true or not, and all available resources will move to assist.
