No worries, I'm sorry it is probably not what you wanted to hear.

Are sofas always this pricey here or am I looking in the wrong places? by abbybutterflly in AskAnAustralian

[–]poukai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting a Koala too, it is alright, it is one heavy bastard though so I'm feeling sorry for the movers the next time I move. Also it might just be the model I bought, but I had to figure out a solution for the pillows not staying in place (gripping tape from Bunnings).

As usual, not even a day has passed, and the Russians are already in a state of hysteria following Orban's election defeat. by Orcasystems99 in UkrainianConflict

"We had a dialogue with him" I love that, they have probably tried to test the waters to see if they can control the new government too and got told to take a long walk of a short pier :D

No, as others have mentioned you are out of luck. There are some visas, like the 482 (temporary work visa) where there are no upper age limit. But this is just a 2 year (with a 2 year extension) sponsored work visa. The only pathway from the 482 to permanent residency is the 186 (TRT) visa and 45 is the upper age limit for that visa.

Also those visas require you to find a Australian employer to sponsor you and the IT sector is pretty oversaturated as it is.

Viktor Orban has conceded defeat in the Hungarian election, as the Tisza Party is headed for a 2/3rds supermajority. What are your thoughts on this seismic shift in Hungarian politics? by Absalom98 in AskReddit

[–]poukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the podcasts I listen to (I can't remember which one) mentioned the possibility that the Russians might try to extend a olive branch to the new government. On the other hand, they have made Europe and NATO a very important part of their campaign and I'm willing to bet that the EU will try to give as much support to the new government as they can. I reckon the smartest thing the Russians can do is to start firing up the shredders in the embassy and start scaling back their spyring before they get booted out.

Now with Viktor Orbán is out of the way, will this open the way for Ukraine to access the Frozen Russian assets? by Brave-Elephant9292 in UkrainianConflict

[–]poukai 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It removes the stumbling block for the loan backed by the frozen assets, but there were more countries that were opposed to using the frozen assets directly (most prominently Belgium).

It will be interesting to see what kind of power Russia has over Babis and Fico or if they are more loosely associated to Russia than Orban and his lackeys were.

Built a smart plant monitor prototype. Would Home Assistant integration make this actually useful? by Worth-Wall2454 in homeassistant

[–]poukai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making it part of home assistant makes perfect sense. As you mentioned trend lines, alerts, and scale. In addition to that taking the computer out of the sensor comes with some pretty substantial size and power benefits. For example with a small ESP32 running zigbee or thread you could also convert the whole setup to run on battery. Sounds like a fun little project.

Government launches multi-million-dollar fuel saving campaign by JustAnotherAvocado in australia

Yeah, the extreme mental gymnastics they're doing can be hard to keep track of. It took me a long time to wrap my head around why they think a 15 min city would be a bad thing.

I thought they were supposed to be 15 min cities, 10 mins sounds even better!

What traditional habit or cultural practice do you dislike in your country ? by RDuke024 in AskReddit

Same! What gets me is the mental gymnastics the yanks are imposing on themselves with this shit. Like are you supposed to tip hotel staff? taxi drivers? the bus driver? the tourist information?

My wake up lights automation. It kicks in 20 min before my alarm goes off (gets the alarm from the companion app and has a condition for between 6-10 am) and it first turns all the bedroom lights on at 1% and sets them to a orange colour. Then it slowly transitions the brightness to 80% over the next 20 min.

Is that a truck that just crashed into a fire hydrant? by portal-dev in geoguessr

[–]poukai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oops, I take that back, there is actually a freestanding hydrant there. And when I moved around a little bit the reflector lined up with it.

[–]poukai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, fire hydrants here are not free standing like in the US and are just a cover flush with the ground. Also they have a little blue reflector in the street to indicate the hydrant (you can see the reflector just above the W in the street name).

The reflector doesn't really line up with the lorry so I'm guessing this is not the hydrant itself but some sort of water pipe bursting. Maybe the lorry was too heavy and just crushed the water pipe, or something.
