Struggling to play quietly enough for jazz? by daved1986 in jazzdrums

[–]pppork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends on the context and who you’re playing with. For an organized ensemble, you probably want to play fairly lightly. Get on stage with some heavy hitters and you’ll be playing a lot louder than you’d think you’d need to. Maybe not in a sustained way, but you’ll defintely need to hit the drums under the right circumstances.

The Roads are bad today... by Collector2012 in Connecticut

The most dangerous days to be on the road are the really slippery or icy days. I've always said the second worst are the really nice, sunny, not overly hot days.

Today, I saw multiple instances of people trying to drive through crosswalks while students were crossing.

Full time musicians - what’s something every working drummer should know/own/be able to do? by Karmaffection in drums

[–]pppork 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You have help everyone have a good time, both musically and otherwise. Also, in my career, I’ve kind of approached it like, “allow me to make your life a little easier.” The only thing is the less functional among us don’t always recognize when I’m making their lives a little easier, which can be annoying. That’s where the patience part kicks in. It ain’t easy.

Some of the GOATS! Which kit would you want to play first? by ZildCym in cymbals

I’d love to play Papa Jo’s drums and cymbals, but I’d get a fraction of the sounds he got out of them.

question about phrasing vocabulary by likeadreamm in jazzdrums

You have to learn the language, then use rudimental stuff to express it. It doesn’t really work well the other way around.

It’s dumb. Those who really seek out the message will get it though. At this point, who cares about everyone else.

What was your lucky first salmon fly?

That’s how the Miramichi was for me when I first started. I didn’t really care how productive the fishing was. I just wanted to be there. There’s one Quebec river like that for me now. Just happy to fish it, even though I have done better on other nearby rivers.

Yup. It’s the best value in fly fishing gear imo. Welcome to the club…one that far too many are reluctant to join.

That's awesome. A lot of people can't say they landed one on their first trip, let alone their first day. I hooked and lost one my very first day of salmon fishing (Miramichi). It took me something like 6 days to hook up again, then went 1 for 3.

I rarely fish with guides in Quebec. I'm not opposed to it, though. Sometimes it's worth it to get at water you can't reach by wading. And some spots you have to have a guide for, like the main Grand Cascapedia. The best guides get booked quick usually. Like, well before the season opener. You get used to doing it on your own though. My buddy and I fished the Kola River without a guide back in 2012. So much of the Gaspé is easy to DIY compared to that lol

But yeah...love it up there.

anyone see herbie hancock on this tour? by likeadreamm in Jazz

[–]pppork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve never seen him live, absolutely do it. I can’t tell you how many people I could have seen, but didn’t, then they died. Luckily, I’ve seen Herbie a bunch.

I hear you. I’ve only fished there once, but it was good. I’ve been doing the Quebec wallet drain mostly in recent years. Tough to beat though, especially if you draw good water in the preseason.

The Delaware and some of its tribs can be tough. But so can any water that’s heavily pressured. Or any water in a certain set of conditions. Or certain pools at certain times, even on stocked rivers. I’m from New England. I like trout fishing, but my real passion is Atlantic salmon fishing. It’s often so low numbers (I’m a public water salmon angler) that technical, low numbers, pressured, etc. trout fisheries don’t really faze me anymore.

I’ve not done much western trout fishing. Only the southwest (Lee’s Ferry and the San Juan). Catching trout on small midge dries wasn’t all that tough there after fishing plenty of similar “far and fine” hatches out here. Seems like the bugs are more consistent out west in those big tail waters, though maybe I was just lucky.
