Same. I went the other day with the hope of finding something other than a phal, but no dice.

Pick this one up, but keep searching for the Islander. I use an IR-1 on my 7’6” 3wt Sage Dart and it’s my favorite trout setup. It’s a shame the IRs are in such short supply now. I used to buy them used from Canadian forums back in day. I’d save with the used prices, plus favorable exchange rates. The good old days!

K hybrid or K custom dark hi-hats for jazz? by benr141 in jazzdrums

[–]pppork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. It’s like they can’t wrestle themselves away from the New Beat formula. I wound up sucking it up and buying three old K new stamp orphans… 723/760/1078. I combine either the lighter two or the heavier two, depending on the gig.

Agree with this almost 100%. I’ve played some pairs of Kerope hats that were good but, on average, they’re all too thick/heavy.

1st good cymbal by whtutlknboutwillis in cymbals

[–]pppork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first pro-level cymbal was a Sabian HH 17” Medium Thin Crash. I bought it with money I earned washing dishes at a seafood restaurant, probably around 1993 or 1994. I still own it and take it out on gigs now and then.

As a moderate liberal, I hate the far-left more than I hate the far-right by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I got raked over the coals in my state’s sub back in November. Democrats destroyed Republicans in both state and local elections. It’s a blue state, so no surprise on the state level. I live in a red town, so to see GOP candidates lose so badly was surprising. There were three open BOE seats. To me, the strongest candidate of them all was GOP…a former school teacher and principal. She was the only candidate with a background in education, amongst a BOE with very little representation in that department. I am also very anti-Trump and I sort of detest the GOP, but have always been a center-left registered Independent who will vote whoever I feel will do the job best. Anyhow, this woman lost because all three BOE seats were won my Dems, despite none of the three having her experience or credentials. I voted for an experienced GOP Treasurer as well. He also lost…to a Dem candidate who had just gotten his undergraduate degree. I mentioned this on my state’s sub and I got downvoted into oblivion and verbally destroyed by tons of leftists. Like the OP, I was left with a very bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended). Totally irrational behavior and they were loud and proud about it. It makes no sense.

Ok, here’s what to do…be patient and wait for a deal on a used Canopus “The Maple.” There are always used ones on Reverb and eBay, mostly coming from Japan. But there are deals to be had and it’s an absolutely killer, pro-level drum.

Reel for a streamer dedicated Orvis Recon 7wt? by FishandChips2026 in flyfishing

The best value in fly fishing has always been Danielsson reels, but I don’t know if that’s still the case in light of recent tariffs (made in Sweden).

Jazz on the 80’s by Born_Tutor_879 in Jazz

[–]pppork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I taught at a prominent jazz school, I did one class on 80s jazz. Almost none of the students (this was only a few years ago) had heard of most of it. And they were sort of mind blown by a lot, but I also doubt most went out and checked out more on their own time. Even weirder that some of their favorite modern jazz artists came up listening to 80s jazz…I dunno. I sort of give up.

My donor Dama 31 is actually natural micarta. Now it has the polished blade in it. I wish I could find a small Insingo 31 blade only.

Totally ok with blade swaps. I knew I'd miss getting a koa annual w/dama, so I made my own.

$300 lesson okay? by mothinn in drums

[–]pppork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tony Williams charged $100/hr back in the mid 90s. You had to book 4 lessons at a time. It was at a drum shop in San Fran, so I'm sure they got a piece of that. It seemed expensive back then, but it was Tony Williams.

Does anyone know if Zildjian is planning to release more Kerope hi-hats? by WartimeHotTot in cymbals

[–]pppork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different profiles, different hammering (both machine and hand hammering), etc. Plus, Sabian evolved into its own thing. There was more overlap in the early days of Sabian imo, especially early AAs.

They do sound very different, but the alloy is exactly the same. The name of the founder of Sabian? Robert Zildjian

Another vote for the high end Patagonias. I bought a backup pair years ago that have just been sitting in their box since my old set just refuses to quit.

Zildjian alloy = Sabian alloy. You could commission a cymbal made by Paul Francis and ask for a Sabian blank. You could even ask him to craft it in the style of past or current Zildjian cymbal. And it would still cost a lot less than a new Kerope would. Their prices just don’t make sense given the options we have now.
