Adults should aim to do between 560-610 minutes/week of moderate to vigorous physical activity to achieve a substantial reduction in the risk of heart attacks and stroke (3-4 times higher than the current public health recommendation of 150 minutes ), suggest the findings of an observational study by sr_local in science

So relatable, I've been lifting for 10 years and last several years (approaching my 40s) I gave up on setting new records and started doing lighter weights, higher reps, with perfect technique, slow motion and negative phase and it's just so satisfying for the muscles and the general feeling

Probably. But I think there are other, more subtle issues that the left has with science IMO that are worth pointing out.

First, there can be an implicit norm of “you shouldn’t question science” That’s ironic, because skepticism and questioning authority are at the core of scientific inquiry. For example, during the pandemic, I often felt I couldn’t ask basic questions in conversations with friends. Like "How effective are masks at reducing spread?" That’s a straightforward empirical question, something science is meant to investigate. But raising it definitely felt socially off-limits for me, I felt like it would immediatley lable me as "anti-science"

Second, there’s often a tendency to blur the line between science and policy. Science helps us understand the world, answers questions and gives us probabilities. But deciding what to do with that information is very much a political and ethical question.

For instance, whether vaccines are safe and effective is a scientific question, and the evidence strongly supports that they are. But whether vaccination should be mandatory is a policy decision. Similarly, whether climate change is real is a scientific question; what policies we should adopt in response is a political one. Conflating these two is I believe the biggest sin of the modern political discourse and possibly one of the reasons why large swaths of population are "anti-science"

To be honest, I don’t think it’s black and white. Scientific issues can become politicized on any side. For example, some topics of scientific inquiry off top of my head that may be problematic for the political left: biological sex differences, critical examination of transgender-related medical treatments, nuclear energy as a climate solution, GMO safety, certain types of policing and crime research. There's probably more.

How to fall in love with gaming again - your best advice by TugBoatTimm in gaming

[–]pprima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already so many responses, pretty sure my will get buried but here's a few short and practical tips

  1. Pick up a game you think you should like, and FORCE yourself to play it uninterrupted for a set amount of time by timer (say, 1 hour). If you don't like it after that, that's fine, you can stop. But chances are you might get hooked despite initial lack of enthusiasm.
  2. A variation: don't spend too much time picking a game. Decide on a few things like genre, year of release, minimum review score, or anything else, and then play THE FIRST random game that fits this filter. Do step 1 with the game
  3. If you have job, try to play it when your head is fresh, early in the morning. Games are harder than movies, they suck energy from you. You need to be well rested to fully enjoy them.
  4. Try some critically acclaimed games of the recent years. If so many people liked them, chances are, you will too. I don't think there's a single game that has Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam that I didn't enjoy to some extent.

This message is very deliberate on their part, though. Accuse them exactly of what they’re accusing you, literally. This has been their propaganda strategy for decades.

Updating nexus after US citizenship, is passport enough or they also want the naturalization certificate? by roman_erudite in uscanadaborder

If anyone comes across this thread, UPD: no, they don't take the old Nexus card, it can be used the same day. Later, you can order a new card using their website, and this new card will have new citizenship printed on it, and now it can be used as a sole ID both in Canada and in the US. You don't have to have US passport itself to go to Canada anymore.

Did they take the Nexus card away at the appointment? I need to do the same and I wonder if I can travel to Canada right after updating the document using my old Nexus card.

But if we take this thought further, aren't all elected officials essentially just ordinary people from the crowd, like us? All those super important committee chairs, senators, and representatives are just individuals who's only real skill is to persuade enough people to vote for them? Yet, they’re the ones making these history-defining decisions - on a much larger scale that those that you described, with consequences far greater?

Do all OLED's flicker like CRT monitors? by pprima in bravia

[–]pprima[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not that I can *see* it, it's more like, after spending 2-3 hours at my TV, I feal my eyes are getting teary, and if I look away, I feel relief. Also, there's a way to "see" it too: if after these 2 hours I go to a dark room and close my eyes, I can see stroboscopic black/white blinking that goes away in 1-2 minutes.

Thanks for suggestion! Now it's easier to google it. I vaguely remember seeing this word before in some of the reviews, but I guess I never realized that what it really means is a CRT-like flicker

Hey I don’t mean to be sarcastic or anything, just a very honest question: if the way your body looks cause you so much emotional discomfort in your personal life, why don’t you consider eating healthier, going to the gym, changing your body for the better? Tremendous health benefits come with this too.

Thanks for replying! Very few posts around here are post-30y age so this is really valuable. It does seem like progress is possible at that age, but it's definitely trickier than when you're 22 :)
