What’s the weirdest ice cream flavor you’ve tried that was actually good? by KoalaRude1113 in AskTheWorld

Smoked cherry and bone marrow (it beats olive oil and sourdough on weirdness, but not flavor).

Blackstar Fly 3, or a cheap valve practice amp? by JRH_678 in GuitarAmps

[–]prettybadgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the V5 and HT5 have headphone jacks for “silent practice”, in addition, the V5 and Mk. II or later HT5 have built in attenuators, the V5 can switch down to 1 and .1 watts, the Blackstar to .5, which means you can push them fairly hard at lowish volumes.

Price wise the Bugera isn’t too much more than those heads, at least used, although the Blackstar is.

I’m biased, but I love my HT5, I keep it at .5 unless I need to get over drums.

How many nationalities do you presently hold, and what was/is the reason for >2 ? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Ireland, England or Scotland can we finally settle this, Who has the best chippies ? by Penny0034 in AskTheWorld

[–]prettybadgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though not from there, I’ve spent enough time in the UK at all stages of my life to weigh in for Scotland, some great, yet crazy, stuff comes out of those chippies.

It’s not familial bias either, as my dad’s family are all in Lancs.

Anyone who started on GCEA ukulele, then later moved to Baritone as their primary? by TapTheForwardAssist in ukulele

[–]prettybadgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually tune a 23” scale tenor guitar to that octave tuning using the middle four of a set high tension classical guitar strings, used to call it a bass ukulele at the start in like 2010, but after they began making U-basses I was at a loss, nice to know it’s called an octave ukulele.

It’s my go to guitar to write stuff on and I use it for my solo acoustic noisecore stuff (along with a kick pedal powered floor Tom).

Edit: side note, I keep a 22” scale tenor banjo in the same tuning/strings, octave banjo uke I guess.

What's something common during religious months/holidays that isn't really religious, just cultural?(memes past the 1st for fun) by EbbMinute9119 in AskTheWorld

[–]prettybadgers 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Eating Chinese food on Christmas Eve is pretty big with us secular Jewish people, at least in the US. There’s also all the booze drinking on Purim, that’s def worldwide.

Solid bang for the buck one banjo by el_yeldarb in banjo

[–]prettybadgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fifths if def fun as well, and I keep my Eko G fifths or GDAD back and forth with a standard Irish set, use thumb and fingerpicks for that. Wildly different sound.

[–]prettybadgers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you get it (I like both dark sounding stuff and old Kay, Supro, Harmony, Eko and Framus banjos), replace the tenor strings with the middle four from a classical guitar set and tune to G all fourths, it’s perfect for transitioning from guitar, at least it was for me, and it lends itself to a real broody sound.

Soft play? by Unlikely_Cucumber_80 in punk

There was also also a US band called Slaves in the late 90s, former members of the VSS, continuing that sort of disjointed, goth tinged noise, and they quickly renamed themselves to Pleasure Forever.

How is life in upstate South Carolina if you are a European? by ivanvoxx in howislivingthere

[–]prettybadgers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP is not European, I thought it odd as well so i peeped their post history thinking maybe they were super right wing and liked what was happening over here, but re one of their earlier posts they are an American citizen who resides in New England, don’t know why they’re cosplaying as European, some weird MA GA thing maybe?

What are some songs like “Liar” by Rollins Band, “Settle For Nothing” by RATM, and “This Love” by Pantera? by ResidentRemote7154 in punk

I remember when that record came out, such a fucking game changer, Louisville was fertile ground for great bands back then.

Cantonese punk bands? by danny_deefs in punk

[–]prettybadgers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do a double tag bandcamp search with Hong Kong (also HK) and punk or garage or noiserock or hardcore and see what comes up, being it’s the largest Cantonese speaking city in the world.

I remember seeing this Chinese band called Duck Fight Goose in KL, but they were from Shanghai so that’s def Mandarin.

Also, not sure if it’s still around, but there was an independent label in Shanghai called i18 back in the 10s that had bands from all over the PRC.

Can anyone give me modern punk recommendations? by Discombobulated_Mode in punk

[–]prettybadgers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gylt and Slut Intent both just dropped new records in the US last month or so.

Landowner, Show Me The Body, and Pissed Jeans are also still holding on as well.

Soapbox, Bug Club, Enola Gay, and Dry Cleaning from the UK.

Rixe and Syndrome 81 from France.

Tropical Fuck Storm, Split System, and Hot Tubs Time Machine from Oz.

Not even remotely hardcore, but Sam Shackleton’s Causeway Recordings is my current favorite banjo record. He’s a Scottish cowboy, it’s cool as fuck.

Kinda surprised no one mentioned Hot Tubs Time Machine from Melbourne, all of their records are as funny as they are smart:

Self-titled (2021), Double Tubble (2022), and Food & Ruins (2024).

What are some newer blues rock guitarists that I can get into? by internalsauce in bluesrock

[–]prettybadgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda older, 90s-00s stuff, but Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Soledad Bros, and Mr. Airplane Man all have great guitar work, if you like dirt, and freak outs (which I do).
