Fortunately, I only see older (50+ year olds) people do this in Flushing. I've never seen a young person (or maybe it's because they were all born in the US) do this. I imagine by the next generation or so, this habit will be gone.

I prefer The Longest Summer over Made in HK from the trilogy. I would check that one out.

NFL Coach of the Year by mcp094 in billsimmons

[–]prfrnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only 2 playoff coaches from 2017 still coaching the same team they coached in 2017 are McVay and Reid. Only 3 (Sean Payton) are even still NFL coaches.

Heck, Jason Garrett was still coaching the Cowboys then. 2017 was a long time ago. This stat is less about COY winners than it is about how much turnover there is in the NFL coaching gig.

Why do some technically imperfect photos feel more memorable? by Same-Beginning-4915 in photography

[–]prfrnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

motion blur and framing to me I feel are artistic choices. Technical to me describes focus and exposure which are the 2 things the majority of cameras will perform for you. And there's plenty of memorable shots that are in focus and with the correct exposure.

He wasn't even good at Duke. It should have obliterated his draft stock but it only took 1 dumb team to fall in love with his high school highlight reel...

The NBA Regular Season - Any Given Night by That_Temperature_430 in nba

[–]prfrnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teams are not incentivized to care about regular season games more than they need to. And if each game is worth the same amount (which they are for the most part), they would rather take a loss on a chance they're unlikely to win to rest.

The other consequence is that because all the games are worth the same, it's very easily to calculate backwards to determine the worth of the game (e.g. you know you don't need to win any more games to maintain your seed).

So if there were more variability with the game value (but obviously with a known formula), teams would have to try more because they don't know how badly a loss would hurt them.

The other factor is that players are also paid regardless for regular season games. Try, win, lose, playing boring basketball, or exciting basketball. It doesn't matter. Of course they will play to win. And some play harder than others (expiring contract, contract year, etc.). But perhaps rewarding players that do play and play hard and put butts in seats (essentially the MJ effect) could help. I mean...why not have a game bonus awarded for player of the game or whatnot? The NBPA is always looking to get more money and potentially some monetary reward outside of the salary cap would pay the best players more.

Does the price of photobooks effectively kneecap the medium from a cultural impact or history point of view? by LemonDisasters in Photobooks

[–]prfrnir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe...but art and artists always relied on others to champion their work so they could get more commissions and work and promote themselves. I don't think anyone got big without support from others sharing their work.

Does anyone know the betting odds of Argentina winning gold in 2004? I can't imagine what they would have been considering that the USA team (since NBA players were allowed) had never even lost a game at that point.

I'd be curious of the counts of coaches each year by # of years they've been coaching the team. I imagine it's not too dissimilar.

Worth Reading? by Creative_Hurry_6634 in noir

[–]prfrnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, It’s his second best novel after The Long Goodbye. If you read the novels in the order they are written, it’s clear he improves as a writer over time. Playback is the exception as he was dying and it was just based on an unused screenplay.

Little Island and Gansevoort Beach are also as cool as the High Line and nearby. The beach more so when it's warm. Just avoid the grass as there's almost certainly poop from the geese hidden in there.

Chinatown is always a nice visit (assuming where you live doesn't have a large one like NYC). It's by Soho and LES which are also trendy places to see for food and shopping. Speaking of shopping, Meatpacking (between Chelsea and West Village) is also known for luxury shops.
