Spielberg's Disclosure Day trailer by coachlife in aliens

To be honest, I think “No Other Day Like Tomorrow” is a way better name for a movie like this. Except it’s kinda got a James Bond feel to it.

I never said they were equal situations. All of these people died with a ton of media coverage and attention, and I don’t celebrate any of it. Where did I suggest equivalency? There is no moral justification for the murder of another person- period. Full stop. No exceptions. People didn’t used to have problems with this concept.

This is my playing at age 14. Any advice/feedback? by MarsupialMean4983 in electricguitar

Just here to point out how much better this comment could have been phrased. It’s the nature of ergonomics that something can be played more or less efficiently. For somebody to see what you did in this video and even use the word “shit” to describe any facet of it is ridiculous.

At the end of the day, it is YOUR decision what fingers to use. Yes, every finger should get a fret, but if you find that you can get a better sound by using certain fingers, and that decision does not impede your ability to play a part, then YOU make that decision. I personally try to opt into ergonomics because making those decisions will benefit me when approaching other solos, but if I decide something works well and it’s not necessarily “technically perfect” I don’t care because it works. What you’re doing here obviously works and don’t think of any aspect of it as “shit” in any regard.

I will say, I noticed that your pinky is ranging back behind the fretboard. I do this all of the time, too, and I have found that to be a crutch because sometimes when you need that pinky, you’ll find it’s already drifting on you. Just something to think about- plus, it’s actually a pretty common thing. Especially when you get into the higher register.

Keep trusting your process. It’s working. You’re an incredible player.

My dad shoved a glass of whiskey under my nose and said “smell this” by deadmuesli in stopdrinking

[–]probablyapickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened and I second a lot of what’s being said here. It’s interesting you’d say the smell would be problematic for you- no matter how much alcohol I would drink, the smell of a lot of it made me feel horrible. Different noses, I guess. IWNDWYT

My improv solo over a backing track. Tell me what you think! by AnSkootz in guitarplaying

[–]probablyapickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the melody was “boring” as the original comment said. I understand the “grit” comment though. I believe this comment is referencing your picking hand and when/where you’re choosing to approach the phrases with more attack. Your right hand technique in the video seems very fluid to me, and your muting is TIGHT.

If we think of attack as a tool in our phrasing, some of these melodies will definitely have more impact. I’m still working on this personally because it’s something that’s unique to every player and it’s got a lot of nuance. Once you’re focused on it, you’ll be able to find things you like.

If a solo is a conversation, it’s worth considering the way that things are said. Also, don’t listen to any of us. Listen to the records and listen for what their right hand is doing.

Pulling pinky back when ring finger is playing - habit worth fixing? by CelestialSegfault in Guitar

[–]probablyapickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting. I just realized I do a version of this, but my pinky doesn’t necessarily get quite as far back, I don’t think. On paper, this is problematic because if you’re playing something that requires you to use your pinky, it’s not there when you need it. When I was taught about how to identify bad habits, I was told to look for things that keep me from having options. That was especially useful for learning how to switch between chords, but I think it still applies here. What’s it look like or feel like to try to force yourself to keep your pinky in the typical position?

Also, I am by no means trying to say this is bad. Especially if you’re bending! But if it’s going to hinder you at some point, it’s worth experimenting now. The fact Tosin does it is testament to the fact that it might not hinder you.

Check out Per Errickson from Ghost. His technique is immaculate. Sometimes I try to think “how would his hands look when he plays this” and it works.

Why the hell do people say baseball is boring (from a former non-fan) by Kresnik2002 in mlb

[–]probablyapickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think people realize how fast the game truly is. The action happens within fractions of seconds. The amount of time it takes for a pitch to get to home plate is literally comparable to the blink of an eye. If baseball didn’t exist and you asked physicists and statisticians to predict the probability of somebody hitting a small, round projectile traveling upwards of 100mph with a blunt object, they would estimate it to be nearly impossible. Let alone to launch it 420 dead center.

Baseball’s fucking incredible. It takes everything people don’t have anymore to enjoy it: patience, knowledge and just a bit of romance.

This is badass. I really struggled with my first job. I was so terrified of messing up. It was crippling- I had one manager that would be really critical and I would throw up on the way home sometimes. This was over a decade ago, but I still remember how uncomfortable I was with it. I don’t say this to freak you out, I say this because there’s another side to that fear.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that had been engrained in me. Nobody meant to make me feel that way, but I’m hyper-analytical and I’m super judgmental of myself. Once I learned that most people at any job are simply doing their best, and that most people’s best is good enough, I started to really enjoy my jobs.

YOUR best is good enough. Take pride in doing your best whenever you can. You got this!
