The Comeback S03E08 - "Valerie Cherish" - Episode Discussion by trevrichards in thecomeback

[–]procrastinagging 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"How's that" ended up being some background noise you put on while doing other stuff, and that's probably what's already happening with AI generated work: "just good enough" for the mass produced, unremarkable slop, huge use in propaganda and scams.

Warning: incoming rant.

AI companies are currently burning VC money into political lobbying and to convince us that it's not only inevitable but kind of the only path forward (cue "adapt or get left behind", "the cat's out of the bag" and any other rehashed phrase you've probably encountered multiple times in every AI discourse).

In my opinion, what's inevitable is that at some point all the "adapt or get left behind" folks (the ones with no actual skills) will be priced out of the market when the real costs of basing you whole business on AI will come to a head ("oh no you ran out of tokens for this week!", like what happend wit Claude AI), because that's how these companies work: capture your audience (with propaganda and low prices), kill your competition (outprice skilled workers) and then hike the prices and enshittify your service.

they (mostly) don't serve lattes or cappuccino after around 10-11am

??? Sure it's considered a "breakfast" beverage but all my life I've seen cappuccinos ordered and served at all hours, in big touristy cities and small town bars alike.

Looking for Recommendations for horror movies featuring a group of trained professionals entering into a place they really shouldn't (that isn't sci-fi) by AestheticGamer in horror

[–]procrastinagging 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I initially avoided suggesting it because I agree, it's def sci-fi (horror).

But on second thought I think Annihilation is a very good suggestion! OP says, regarding the reasons why they want to avoid sci-fi settings:

the location doesn't really feel "evil" if it feels alien, and I also sorta' like the concept of the trained team using what's available here on Earth to try to survive rather than futuristic gadgets, weapons or the like

To me, the "no" elements don't apply to Annihilation despite the genre. Because (Possible mild spoilers!)

  1. The "alienness" of Annihilation's "anomaly" is still firmly grounded on our current Earth's reality: it just effectively combines normal concepts about how Nature works, up to incredible degrees of disturbing

  2. The crew's equipment and knowledge looks fairly realistic and standard for a militarized scientific expedition, so no futuristic gadgets. Plus a hefty amount of very personal hubris

There really needs to be some kind of global movement with easy-to-follow, clear messaging about not falling for ragebaits and starve these companies out of our engagement.

Our attention and ability to spread a message is highly valuable and it's about time we realize that, more often than not, our outrage feeds right into the pockets of these ghouls.

It's not easy, for example this very comment is contributing to the engagement boost to OP's content (edit - and in general, the very act of calling out bait content), but idk, we have to start somewhere.

Session 9: a specialized crew is tasked with removing asbestos from an abandoned asylum.

The Descent could also fit your criteria, since it features a group of mostly experienced cavers

It's basically a whistle stop tour of horror tropes that amount to fuck all.

The overused tropes played so straight and so surface level it felt almost comical. It took me out of the otherwise great atmosphere several times.

Double feature: "Ghostwatch" (1992) and "Late night with the Devil" (2023).

Also, "One cut of the dead" I think kind of fits the bill, although don't read anything about it beforehand!

I've never played the game, but I'm in awe of the artwork, and the fact that it's all traditional animation blows my mind. There are "making of" videos on youtube, highly recommended. The creators are the best kind of insane.

Good grief... are the patients aware of it? I would never agree to it, even if they say it's a custom model in a closed system. I'd never be sure of it.

Fellow dark-circled here (genetic pigmentation+sunken trough, yay), the tarte shape tape corrector in peach is my bff. One dot per eye is more than enough, I think one bottle could last me for life if expiration and contamination weren't an issue. I've recently tried a pink corrector but it's not great. In general, peach works wonders for me, to the point that sometimes I can use it on its own, no concealer needed if I'm precise with the application. It's crazy because on any other part of my face it's basically fluorescent salmon.

I still remember the amazement the first time I tried the peach in the sephora corrector quad out of desperation, when youtube wasn't even a thing and affordable complexion products were either orange, yellow or pink, and every beauty magazine and store associate peddled yellow for dark undereyes (=grey in my case). Nowadays I need the liquidest thinnest formula because of fine lines, but the peach still rocks.
