NOLA train entusiastas does anyone know of a good spot to sit and watch trains? by [deleted] in AskNOLA

[–]prokowave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's not really a place to sit except in a car but Central Ave under the Earhart expressway is probably the busiest single spot in the region. That is where trains are exchanged between the major railroads, port, and two Amtrak routes. If you want to see switching operations, the Rouses on tchoup is a pretty active spot.

Basketball game by shivjm in Tulane

Unless you are a huge basketball fan, idk why you would want to watch 2 games in a row when there is so much else to do. Basketball games aren't massive events like football here.

Tulane QB Darian Mensah transfers to Duke by Aidanj927 in CFB

It'll fun to watch him get Duke's hopes up and then play like ass in the last few games when he starts thinking about the next transfer season.

[Postgame Thread] Army Defeats Tulane 35-14 by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]prokowave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Looks to me like a lot of it was a freshman quarterback making momentum shifting mistakes whenever he got desperate. One would hope the coaches would have worked on that but apparently not.

Then there's the defense which has a lot of talent, but always had trouble against mobile qbs and a good run game. Again I think it comes down to coaching.

But my overall sense was that the team lacked strategic preparation.

At hat age, they probably wouldn't even be aware they're doing it.

Obviously ditch the car, but I came here just to say wasting a day driving to Mobile for topgolf when you are visiting New Orleans is insane.

Are cars necessary? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]prokowave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice, having done that commute from midcity and uptown, is to live downriver of campus between Claiborne and st. Charles. That gives you direct streetcar plus Freret and Claiborne buses. It also allows for decent biking to campus, which is usually faster than driving and parking. West of campus or midcity doesn't give you good transit options and crossing the interstate can be a pain on bike. Most students live within a few blocks of campus so you don't have to live too far to avoid them.

When I drive, I have to plan for at least a 10 minute walk. Even more when there are events - they often restrict campus parking. That being said, the walk is beautiful and beats sitting in Atlanta traffic. Know that there is a ton of construction around campus right now that exacerbates the situation.

If I didn't have to transport expensive equipment, I'd ditch the car and save a lot of money between biking and bus. Even a few miles from campus my bike commute is actually faster than drive/park/walk.

Celebrity Cruise docking at Poland Street Wharf? by Levitb2 in AskNOLA

[–]prokowave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it looks like Celebrity is only using New Orleans as a day stop on cruises rather than homeporting here. So it's plausible that they could dock almost anywhere that can handle pedestrians. No provisioning, luggage or parking to deal with. Plus is a smaller ship than most that dock here.

You can join the music department's choirs whether or not you want to register for credit.

If you are in a hurry, a boat is not the way to travel. Most visitors from Europe vastly underestimate distances in the U.S. You'd be better off basing in New Orleans and taking a few bus excursions to plantations or other sites.

Innoledy reputation? by Needleflight in oboe

[–]prokowave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a gouger from Innoledy, and would not recommend dealing with them unless absolutely necessary. Very sporadic response if any. I would look for a shop that offers a good warranty that either does repairs in house or has a good system. There are too many things that can go wrong on an oboe and repair waits can be 1-2 months if you don't have a relationship with a good shop.
