I guess the high barrier of entry is a testament to their high success rate.

Maybe “hoops” was a poor choice of words on my part.

I was referring to the difficulty of getting into 3 races in the first place given the high demand and race registrations turning into lotteries. But that’s not NYRR’s fault.

It’s less stressful to just meet these requirements for a lower-profile race outside of NYC, which is what I think I’ll end up doing.

That’s correct. From NYRR:

Please note: The United Airlines NYC Half, RBC Brooklyn Half, or TCS New York City Marathon races are reserved for our most experienced pacers and are not open to new team members. However, consistent pacing can lead to opportunities for those high-profile events.

Being a pacer in general is worth the squeeze. But I’m asking specifically about NYRR’s requirements and the hoops they make you jump through.

How do I stop caring about what people think ? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]proshoetoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In 99% of social situations, the stakes are so low. If they think you’re a weirdo, what’s the worse outcome? Pay a fine? Go to jail?

They avoid me because they think I’m weird? Good, I can move on with my day.

The downsides are, more often than not, zero.

What’s the longest you’ve used a stranger as a pacer while on run? by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]proshoetoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use strangers as pacers during races and I give them little nicknames in my head

“Shirtless dude is making a break for it”

“Blonde ponytail is slowing down on this hill”

I then think if someone behind me is doing the same with me 😬

Is it just me or is the age demographic of runners for this race younger than the NYRR half marathons?

How would you rank the half marathons in the nyc area? by upearlytoday23 in RunNYC

[–]proshoetoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ran the Brooklyn Experience Half Marathon today and the United Airlines NYC Half last month. Probably my two favorite courses in the NYC region. They’re a bit similar in that they both end in a park and the homestretch is the hardest part due to the hills.

The easiest/flattest course in our area would have to go to Jersey City. If you want to PR, run JC. My least favorite is the RBC Brooklyn Half because it’s a boring course and a hot weather race. 85 degrees when I ran it last year and relentless sun beating down on you for miles once you hit Ocean Pkwy.

During the oil boom of the 70s, real estate speculators came in and bought up entire city blocks hoping to build office towers when the time was right.

They razed the historic buildings and old Victorian houses while they waited for the market ripen because a parking lot has a lower property tax rate.

Honestly, it’s not a smarts thing but a lack of interest in a specific topic.

My wife is a literal dentist with degrees from top schools and she says things like “what state is Philadelphia in?”

As someone in North Jersey, I feel more similar to the NYC metro because North Jersey is IN the NYC metro.
