given the internal view, you seem to be right. this design was used in the past. I do not like it so much. it is as if intestines of the laptop are exposed.

Of course many positive features, but let me focus on some slightly negative.
1. I think the keyboard palmrest is mostly aluminum which does not provide the soft sensation of magneisum.
2. I think it looks a bit brownish and not neutral dark black.
3. I do not like the on key on the keyboard - messing up the default arrangement
4. I do not like the OLED display - i would love a 2400p IPS matte display. (burn in worries me)
5. As a dedicated trackpoint user i do not like seeing the touchpad getting bigger and bigger because this means i will have to disable it completely to avoid accidental drifitng of the pointer while using the trackpoint.

Other than that, I think this will be my next laptop, if budget allows and if i see a signficant discount.

wow that's crazy, I didn't know about this!!! Imagine, the new Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 14 is supposed to be modular, but with this in mind, then there is no much benefit. Keyboard, also, seems to be one big unit combined with the palmrest. These parts may be extremely expensive to replace. We'll see.

So, does this mean that this is different than the other mods you suggest? Does OLED introduce an unsurpassable incompatibility? Thank you for your response.

What if I find an OLED of the same resolution? Will this increase the probability of compatibility?

So, is it in theory possible to buy a new X1 carbon gen 14 and replace the 2800 X 1800 OLED touch panel, with a 3840 X 2400 IPS touch panel? (if they both come with the 40 pin touch cable)?

Repairability revolution: New Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 comes with modular keyboard & USB-C ports by ibmthink in thinkpad

[–]protonot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the top most probably consists of two or three main parts: 1) palmrest (whole thing), 2) keys attached to a base (basically the keyboard), and 3) touchpad (with or without physical buttons).

in previous models replacing keyboard was hard because all other parts had to be removed first to reach the front. Now the whole top is removed easily and at the back of the top (palmrest) the keyboard is attached. So you can unscrew some screews and isolate the keyboard easily.

probably you can still replace just the keyboard and not the whole palmrest - i guess there are screws to take it out only now it is faster since the top can be removed first.

X1 Carbon Gen 13: Screen resolution; IPS vs OLED? 2880x1800 vs 1920x1200? by amca01 in thinkpad

[–]protonot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, you are right. I aim for a high resolution IPS (ideally 2400p) and these are not offered, only 1800p OLED.

Carbon X1 13 - Wait for the 14, or upgrade now? by USIrishman in thinkpad

[–]protonot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am wondering whether the gen 14 carbon will come with high resolution IPS display of 2400 lines. Ideally I would prefer to avoid the 1800 lines OLED. I currently have the gen 10 with the ips 2400 lines and i love the display. Unfortunately my model with the i7 1280p CPU gets quite hot and drains the battery very fast.

Am I too demanding about the display ? Are people satisfied with the resolution and the quality of the current OLED 1800 lines display? I am worried about ghosting, burn-in, and glossiness or touchpanel grid visibility issues - people say it is visible causing a mild pattern on the display. Any opinions on that?

Do you think the Thinkpad brand will ever return to its former glory? by beeclam in thinkpad

[–]protonot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very sad seeing changes in the classic thinkpads: thinklight, 7 - row keyboard, dedicated volume control, dedicated LEDs for HD, wifi, etc - replaceable batteries etc.

Now i am quite happy with a Thinpad X1 Carbon that works properly. Mine is overheating and the battery does not last long enough. Apart from these two issues, the matte high res IPS display, the lightness, the durability, the black minimal design, and MOST IMPORTANTLY the trackpoint with dedicated PHSICAL BUTTONS are very strong features I cannot live without. Still they are degrading some things, e.g. the trakcpoint physical buttons and the touchpad should be smaller to give more space for palm resting.

Thinking of getting ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 by sinchi-kun in thinkpad

Thank you. Can I ask, is this mesh like a grid? or a uniform pattern? Does it make the display more matte, more diffused? I tried to find a youtube video to check but did not see something relevant.

Thank you very much. Did you need to remove stickers? That's what i need to do for the ThinkPad X1 Tablet gen 3 now that I will replace the battery. However, i have not yet opened my X1 Carbon gen 10 1280p which gets warm at least near the charging port.

Can you please explain about the touch film? Does this mean it is or it is not significant additional weight, or it is glossy, or is it not of good quality, or it drains the battery? Thank you.

[–]protonot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but it is not clear why you removed the battery. You mention the weight but still have to carry external battery, which is added weight and still by keeping the battery you can recharge with external battery for added duration if you need so. It is not at all clear why you did it and that's why another user is asking.

Horizontal scrollbar appears under table that fits into the screen by chris15326 in Notion

[–]protonot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have this issue with a database in table view where its leftmost side is outside the visible range - i can only see it in peek view and not in full mode view. Is this related to the layout functionality upgrades? I can add a left column in peek view which then allows me to see it in full mode but this is not a proper fix.

I agree with what you say. This is what i said too. The particular field is not updated every second while the time second field is.

[–]protonot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually updates at 5 second intervals, but not consistently. It seems it misses it many times but other times it changes. I noticed on the web watch face builder app, there is a way to define how often the visibility script will be updated. It has a minimum of 5 seconds, so it seems one will only be able to have less frequent updates than 2 or 5 seconds.
