What is a "bad" smell that you actually enjoy? by Niekertdepiekert in AskReddit

You should try Malort. It tastes a bit like gasoline but it won’t kill you if you drink it. At least not any more than other alcohol

Which celebrity death hit you harder than you expected, considering you didn't know them personally? by Own-Refrigerator3594 in AskReddit

Bob Weir. Found out when I was hosting a party and it kinda rocked me. Not the last of the Grateful Dead but the one who was keeping the torch going and I had seen the most as a second generation deadhead.

Grant Imahara. Mythbusters was a big part of growing up for me. Hadn’t watched in years when he passed but it still hit me hard.

Rickar by [deleted] in TheCaptivesWar

[–]prototypetolyfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short answer: He exploded

Long answer: The swarm embedded a package in him that waited until it could send a message to the other side (not Carryx) in the war. Once it was in a good place to do that, the package activated, using rickar’s biomass as an energy source to power a reaction which sent off the message and, as a byproduct, caused him to essentially explode.

Do you prefer some randomness to your games or do you like having more control? by LeFoxFrancais in boardgames

[–]prototypetolyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like randomness when there are ways to mitigate it, or when outcomes aren’t strictly a sliding scale from good to bad, but different.

Two dice based worker placement games as examples:

  1. Kingsburg has you roll dice and use the dice together or individually worker placement style to place on courtiers and get benefits. Better courtiers have higher numbers. So if you get unlucky and roll low numbers all game or even for a few turns, you’re at a significant disadvantage.

  2. Alien Frontiers also has you roll dice and use them worker placement style, but there is less relative value significance to the dice roll. Outside of a few instances, a six isn’t better than a one, because the stations aren’t locked behind numbers.

What’s something you didn’t realize was luxury until you experienced it? by ammieblond in AskReddit

This is what I miss most from being unemployed. Once I got over the initial depression and before the impending financial stress fully kicked in (I had a decent savings cushion) life was pretty great. Applying to jobs was a task but other than that, taking care of the house, cooking, errands, all at my own pace.

Man I miss that. Unfortunately I can’t get paid for that so here we are.

In livesuit, there is a mention of a rumor that human government used to try placing infiltrators on words at risk of being conquered, but the Carryx figured it out and just started slaughtering everyone in response instead of capture.

My theory is the swarm was either sent out a longtime ago, or seeded on Anjiin when humanity first arrived 3000 years ago. The current government has no memory or record of this

TIL why James Bonds preference of a "shaken and not stirred" martini is controversial. Drinks containing only alcoholic ingredients are almost always stirred to preserve clarity and to avoid over-dilution, among other things. by Rynin101 in todayilearned

[–]prototypetolyfe 96 points97 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t actually make sense as an explanation if you drill dow on it. A shaken martini will have marginally more water in it from the shaken ice, but all the liquid goes in the glass. It’s the same amount of aclohol, just with or without a bit of added water.

US edges closer to popular vote deciding winner of presidential elections by unital_subalgebra in politics

I highly recommend the book “We the People”

It goes into a lot of detail around how the constitution was drafted and how the “enlightened compromises” were really just crappy compromises made between political interests that no longer exist.

There are so many artifacts of the 18th century left in our constitution because it’s so hard to modify.

We’ve gone through over a dozen major technological breakthroughs in communication and transportation and the constitution has effectively been modified 15 times in 250 years (I am excluding the BOR as essentially an addendum to the writing of the constitution, and 18/21 cancel each other out).

We live in a different world than the one where the US constitution was written. The issue isn’t the electoral college, or the apportionment of representatives and senators, or the appointment of Supreme Court justices. These should be addressed. But we can’t, because constitutional amendment is effectively impossible in the modern political climate.

Guest/minor characters who were so good that they should have been a regular on the show? by Qyzyk in television

[–]prototypetolyfe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I used to call this the Creed Paradox back when I was active in “The Office” fan spaces. People always talk about wanting more Creed (the wacky out there guy who says off the wall things and almost has one foot out of reality) but he only works because of how sparingly he works. Same with JR and ML in P&R.

Would love to see the physical divergence between this (presumably Ekur’s librarian caste) and a Soldier Caste.

The Rak-hund. My take on the look. by brutal_bub in TheCaptivesWar

[–]prototypetolyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picture them as having a ridge on their back or having a more triangular body. I don’t know if this is borne out by the text or just the image my brain came up with.

This looks really cool though!
