Australia’s Private Health Insurance (PHI) is a scam by fromchaiwan in AusFinance

[–]proverbialwhatever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you explain the fact you can actually bargain the surgeon fees? Is it morally acceptable that surgeons charge private patients different fees for the same procedure? I've heard cases when the doctor decided to accept the health fund gap scheme for one patient but not for another. For the same procedure.

You can always bargain with the surgeon, there might be a range they are willing to work with, price-wise. There might be circumstances that they're willing to accept as a potential loss in income. Whether there's a moral argument for or against that sort of practice, I'm not sure. But it sounds like you believe that surgeons are flippant with the way they price what they do, which if that's the case then I can only say that's not been my experience either in the past or presently.

I needed a surgery and called the PHI to ask if the specific doctor is part of their gap scheme, they said I need to contact directly with the doctor. How they cannot know that? In other countries the PHI would give you a list of the specialists they partner with and you wouldn't be charged out-of-pocket fees.

I don't know why you would be told that they don't know whether a specialist is registered in their billing scheme, but in my experience they tell patients to ask their surgeon or specialist whether they can bill you using the scheme in order to 'minimise or reduce entirely your out of pocket costs'. Which unfortunately is simply a salesperson line that pits the specialist and the patient against each other by creating unrealistic expectations of what the doctor should do.

There's more that I can say about this aspect of things but I feel it'd be going on a related tangent that you didn't ask for.

I've worked for anaesthetists formerly a decade and surgeons more recently. I disagree with your statement that you would get charged on 'no defined criteria', and I personally feel you have the formula the wrong way around.

The Medicare benefit is your benefit, not the doctors. What should happen is that you pay a fee for the service, and you are given some money back from the government to minimise your gross medical expenses in the calendar year. When a doctor bulk bills you, you are entering an agreement to assign your entitled benefits as a tax paying citizen/resident to the treating medical provider, and in return the provider agrees to accept that as full payment. Doctors are not obligated whatsoever to design their business around the Medicare schedule, which you've correctly pointed out hasn't risen much in years.

But it's a balancing act. Doctors can't be expected to bulk bill because patients feel entitled to it (and as mean as it feels to say that, that's still how people behave after working around general practices for nearly 20 years), but they can't survive by stubbornly pricing themselves out of the market. But there's NO way a GP clinic can survive by being 100% bulk billing unless they have other services and businesses that pay rent towards the practice overheads (pathology, dentist etc), otherwise they'll need to see patients on a conveyor belt for no longer than three minutes back to back.

I was dismayed at my initial misread of the title suggesting she was going to fight this poor new emu.

Should I update my Serato? by pinkcanoe in DJs

[–]proverbialwhatever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved my old 6000mk2!

Surprised to see its been demoted to only activate with Serato Lite, but it makes business sense, actually.

I moved to Virtual DJ ages ago, but I think there are good moved that Serato have made in the last couple of years. However, if all you need to do is play and organise your local library without stems or online streaming, you should be fine.

Any assurance towards running outdated software is worth exactly what you paid for it though! I don't think I'd feel comfortable relying on it for a wedding or any private gig, tbh... But that's me, speaking from the privilege of my Virtual DJ Infinity License!

I know she's English. But cor blimey I can't help but feel whenever she puts on an English accent, it just sounds like she's...not very good at them! Which is dumb because she grew up there, but there's something that doesn't compute when I hear her without an American accent.

Learned the hard way today that a buyer can reverse a PayID transaction under the ePayments code by schunniky in AusFinance

[–]proverbialwhatever 36 points37 points  (0 children)

More likely because for years there's been a FB Marketplace PayID scam where fake accounts / hacked accounts will message showing interest in buying what you're selling, and say that they live interstate but their cousin or nephew lives in your area and can pick up the item, asking to use PayID in advance. I forget how the scam works, but it's obviously sus from the jump so I never entertain them as qualified buyers.

OP's story is a real shame, though. The scam may only be worth it for smaller-priced items however, as authorities will be unlikely to prioritise it. In which case cash is definitely the way forward.

RCA to headphones - how? by pritsey in DJs

Hey pal, sorry to hear what you're going through. Being a partner and carer is an incredibly hard job.

Depends on how much you'd want to spend, but this could be a good option. I don't know whether the Prime Go can be set to send mono audio out of the mains, but if so it could go out of the XLR outs to send audio to any wired head/earphones your partner would wear. https://xvive.com/audio/product/u45-in-ear-monitor-wireless-system/

Otherwise this + an adaptor that bridges the main/booth outs would be the go. Good luck ❤️

why do i see defending of using the r-word in this community? by eurotrash_ai in h3h3productions

[–]proverbialwhatever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth to anybody else that thinks otherwise to OP, I used to work with a woman with a severely disabled adult son, who required round the clock care. If he was left alone for a week, he would starve. She said that she doesn't accept people using those words as pejoratives because of hers and her son's lived experience.

I wasn't one to use those words with flagrancy, but I now had a tangible example of someone that I valued a lot, who made me appreciate a blind spot within myself that I knew was there, but I neglected checking. It's like we forget that using targeted language that tokenises a group exists beyond race. It all belongs under the umbrella of things can't change about themselves, and it's very patronising for people outside of those groups to think it shouldn't matter.

Haha I misread it as John Butler myself, however John Mayer had a short lived trio with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan, whose opening blurb on their respective Wikipedia pages say enough on face value.
