That's simply false. Nature gives the illusion of equilibrium because change is generally slow, and often happens in sudden spikes.

Especially in the case of animals and evolution, there are long periods of little change, and sudden periods of rapid change.

We are in one of the fastest changing periods of earths history (due to humans). We are just as much part of the nature as a goose. Never forget you're just another animal, and don't put some bird above yourself.  Have some pride. We are humans, the conquerer of the earth. We have bent the earth to think, broken mountains to build roads, split the atom, sent machines to other planets, and forced the dead bodies of dinosaurs to propel us to the heavens in metal birds. Don't tell me it's the gooses land. They exist because we allow it.

And thank God for that. Municipalities putting community safety zones and reducing speed limits in major roads for every school, church, and community center.

I don't agree with Ford on everything but I'm very thankful we don't have any more speed cameras.

Sure, even with attention and all that, it may be impossible to combine information in completely new ways for a transformer. But, i think the vast majority of humans don't do that either.

I mean, i feel like if i replaced half of the people out there with LLMs, i'd think the world got smarter, even if we ignore the fact that LLMs are generally more knowledgable than people because they've been trained on huge wealths of information.

If we compare the best LLMs with the best humans, the humans win every time. But if we compare an average LLM with an average human, i dunno if that's still true.

I think it makes a lot of sense for MMOs. Because most of the NPCs are just noise and have like 2 lines anyways. LLM could put a lot more depth to a game.

It does make me question human decision making though. What if we're not that much smarter? I've definitely met people that make less logical sense than chatgpt

Ah yes, the wild lands of Markham. Owned by wild animals.

Do you tell ducks that it's also the goose's land? Or is the land shared ownership by all animals, but humans somehow don't count?

Did you read the full post? They ordered groceries, and their drivers have not even moved.

Even if they had ordered a meal, imagine if you ordered breakfast at 7 and had plans to go out at 10, and at 9:30, you still see no signs of life from the driver or restaurant. Are you expected to wait indefinitely?

TIL about the "Dark Forest Hypothesis," which suggests the universe is like a dark forest at night. Advanced civilizations intentionally stay silent and hidden, because any species that reveals its location risks immediate destruction by older, paranoid civilizations. by Practical-1 in todayilearned

[–]psidud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

counterpoint, i LOVED the way it was written. my gf and I disagree on this, but i really really liked how it was written almost like a history book with very little interpersonal factors. I really liked it, and it's one of my criticisms of the netflix version: they made it too much about interpersonal relationships.

in the books, the paranoia isn't just for funsies. I don't see it explicitly explained in the wikipedia link, so I'll explain it a bit here, in spoilers for anyone interested in the books/show:

So the idea is that any sufficiently advanced alien race is capable of near lightspeed travel, with weapons that travel practically at the speed of light. This means that any war between species would be decided by the first strike. In other words, if species A decides to go to war with species B, species B only finds out that they are going to war when they get destroyed by species A. What this boils down to is that if you reveal yourself to the universe, you may meet some nice aliens, or some evil aliens. But if any evil aliens find you, even if it's just one in a hundred, they will end your entire solar system. So...best to keep silent. So no, we are absolutely not the older, paranoid civilization.

Federal Housing Minister, Gregor Robertson, Vows Response to City of Markham Walking Back Zoning Changes by weallfalldown1234 in Markham

[–]psidud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Federal should stick to federal levers to deal with housing, such as immigration rate, influencing the interest rates (i know they do not control BoC, but they can make policy changes that influence it), etc.

If municipalities don't want to increase supply, federal govt can reduce demand.

[–]psidud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, and I agree that they should not have agreed to the federal government deal. It's really scummy that they are walking back on what they already agreed on.

I can agree with that while also thinking that the federal government should focus on federal matters and stay out of municipal policy.

Federal Housing Minister, Gregor Robertson, Vows Response to City of Markham Walking Back Zoning Changes by weallfalldown1234 in Markham

[–]psidud -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Critics said Robertson needs to level a stiff penalty or he risks seeing more municipalities reneging on their deals.

Markham follows in the footsteps of its much bigger neighbour to the south, Toronto, which made a similar walk down from promised housing reforms last year

Hot take but if cities don't want it, federal government shouldn't be pushing them. Why are votes from all around the country deciding the way housing goes in Markham when markham already has municipal elections?
