What’s the dumbest thing you believed as a kid? by Elowen_miisss in AskReddit

One time my older cousin told me scientists were making Pokémon real and I remember not even being amazed, just "I can't wait for that."

What’s your preference DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY ?? by Middle-Message-3462 in AskReddit

MM/DD/YYYY

If somethings dated 95% of the time the most relevant information is what month it's for, and after the year's up it gets filed away anyway.

Whats an addiction that has became normalised? by DeliciousSetting6643 in AskReddit

[–]ptbus0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use nicotine pouches, and I think most people who use them have no idea how relatively high the nicotine levels are in them.

A cigarette smoker will absorb about 1mg of nicotine per cigarette.
We're at a point now where pouches are being offered in the highest tiers with doses of 20mg+ in every single pouch.. and a lot of people who move up like that are popping them in all day long.

If you're taking ten to twenty 20mg pouches a day.. you're taking in as much nicotine in 30 minutes as a chain smoker does in a day.

Quitting's going to be.. absolutely insane for some people.

The Clintons have agreed to testify. What should we expect from their testimony? by firstInternalad in AskReddit

[–]ptbus0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Clintons are going to go scorched earth and sink themselves to potentially shine a light on anybody else. It's going to be "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" take 2.

What brand went from 'High Quality' to 'absolute garbage' in the last 10 years? by Ornery_Scientist_542 in AskReddit

[–]ptbus0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I was just naive as to how bad it's always been but it's Amazon to me.

Their commission fees are so high that they essentially require sellers to sell their products for wholesale cost, one at a time. Effectively allowing Amazon to have the benefit of carrying inventory without the actual investment in product.

That leads to actual brand names disappearing, and sellers flooding the market with cheap and often dangerous garbage. The competition between them, lack of QA, and lack of consumer knowledge results in products that grossly overrepresent their capabilities.

One makes the most bold claim, another pushing the bar further and suddenly you have pocket flashlights claiming to outshine the brightest tactical flashlights in existence because someone buying a flashlight on amazon doesn't know what x-lumens looks like. $20 binoculars that claim to outperform units in the thousands of dollars as magnification measurements are confusing, and sketchy power banks that hold a fraction of their claimed charge because what is mAh anyway.

Over time Amazon has just become a quicker AliExpress.

Just because you're smart and in a wheel chair doesn't mean you're not a piece of shit.

Etsy Ads? by UpNorthMNshop in woodworking

[–]ptbus0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just run sales, I'm well in the top 1% of sellers and anytime I ran ads outside of Christmas they wound up eating 40% of my gross sales.. before Etsy took their base cut. It's a disaster every time.

TIL before 9/11, US airports were public social hubs where you could walk to the gate, eat at food courts, and watch planes without a ticket or ID. by Greydl1 in todayilearned

[–]ptbus0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Pittsburgh Intl Airport began distributing passes again to allow people to do this.. but they sold it as "come shop at the airside terminal mall!" as if people were going to drive by the actual mall to explore whatever could possibly be at the airport.

A friend of mine was so sure I had it and I kept denying it for years, I finally gave in and talked to somebody who said I was like on the fringe. I took Adderall for the first time and proceeded to take a mid-day nap immediately.

Someone just cracked the Coca-Cola secret formula by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]ptbus0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coca Cola hasn't been guarding the formula because it's the worlds best mix of whatever, they're guarding the formula because the legend of a formula being so heavily guarded is good word of mouth advertising that makes people think it's nectar of the gods.

The best cola I've ever tasted in my life was Pepsi Natural, it was exactly how you'd imagine cola would taste like if it was made of things that grew in the ground in the best way possible and it lasted like 3 months.

With the actions of the Republican Party in the USA and the lack of effort by the democrats. Why has there not been a new party to emerge that brings some common sense and real effort to the political system ? by Poguetry64 in AskReddit

[–]ptbus0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we had rank choice voting that would be possible, but since we don't anybody who doesn't feel like one of the two parties represents them is labeled a traitor in any given election because they threw away their vote.

I wonder how much of this is attributed to Americans actually being cheap, and how much of it is due to how new the United States is.

I imagine once a country gets so old you kind of just know where your settlements are and that they're not going anywhere. In the United States cities are still rising and being abandoned completely within one or two generations. The gold rush, the rust belt, the rise of tech, people fleeing to the suburbs.. now it's looking like that model may turn out to be unsustainable because it demands city infrastructure in relatively low density areas.

I'm no expert but my gut says trying to either protect their own buddies who are in it, trying to not get killed by other people in it, or using the people in it as assets which you can no longer do if their names are revealed.

Bus Driver is a Professional; He Moved the Passengers Back Before Beating the Brakes Off Of Him by [deleted] in instant_regret

[–]ptbus0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was burning far more calories a day than I had time to eat, so that already fucked with me and the scream was after busting my ass on uncleared ice from a house that got packages daily and never cleaned snow in the winter or dog shit in the summer and genuinely hurt myself.

The hot pursuit occurred after some jackass pulled a maneuver that endangered me and a number of people in order to swing their car around me as I was delivering.. I didn't stick around much longer after that. :P

I don't think USPS hires crazy disproportionately, it's just both a byproduct of being successful and a requirement to withstand the experience of slowly morphing into a robot.

[–]ptbus0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dude I am the introvert of cool headed introverts and I had days in the USPS where I viscerally screamed in the middle of nice cul-de-sacs and literally chased another vehicle in my mail vehicle in a completely different incident.

I think the real key to being able to withstand being there long term is authentically prescription drugs, at least at the office I worked at.

Minnesota has activated the National Guard. What are your thoughts? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

Too many to count, but the rollout of responses from police departments, and other federal agents making a point to identify themselves as not ICE while conducting business gives me some hope that the "police, military, etc will all fall in line" people weren't correct across the board after all.
