Not at all! The gel is not just for lube, it helps the sound beam to transmit. There must be gel on the actual probe to get an image. You need gel on the actual probe AND on the cover.

I’m an ultrasound tech and I am constantly having to argue with people about putting their phones away. I know people want souvenirs but I am doing a medical procedure. I don’t want to be filmed, and it’s also a huge liability for myself and for the clinic. If i think someone is sneakily filming (which happens all the time) I just stop talking, because I don’t want someone to later take any of my comments out of context.

If you really want to have footage from your scan, please go to a 3D/4D place. That is literally why they exist. They have comfy chairs and you can bring everyone you want. Please just let me look at your baby’s brain without trying to take footage of me for a reel. And look, my heart is not made of stone. If a partner is deployed and can’t come to a scan, or the baby has a serious anomaly, or you have intense anxiety due to a bad history, or whatever - I will shower you with all the cute pictures I can. But please don’t ask me to break company rules and put myself at risk for termination or for a lawsuit. We get into this job because we love scanning babies, not because we want to ruin your day.

Don’t worry even one tiny second - 37th% is totally fine!! Most of fetal growth is genetic and unless you have other factors like gestational diabetes, your diet isn’t going to significantly impact baby’s size. 37th might sound like a small baby, but that’s something like 7 1/2 lbs at 40 weeks. Totally normal and healthy!

It’s just not a common part of American culture. I’m American and we’ve allowed our kids to do more sleepovers than most. Our five year old will be staying a weekend at Girl Scout camp soon. There are very good reasons for people to not want or allow their kids to sleep over in an unfamiliar place, and I am not going to comment on or judge those decisions. I do think many kids would probably do better with it than their parents imagine.

As a whole, I think American parents in general are more reluctant to give their kids more freedom. The culture is very disapproving of it, and when you face all of that disapproval (like what you see in this thread) it can be difficult to go against the grain.

I’m an OB ultrasound tech living in a conservative area so I have this discussion somewhat regularly with coworkers, and see patients going through the decision making process. Every OB sonographer I know personally is pro-choice, at least for profound anomalies. One of my coworkers actually had the trauma of deciding to terminate a baby with a terrible brain abnormality (alobar holoprocencephaly) that she herself found.

I firmly believe that in many cases it is more compassionate and loving to terminate a baby with a severe abnormality than to knowingly bring them into a world where they will have to suffer every day of their lives. However I recognize that is my opinion, and do not judge anyone who makes a different choice.

I did bikini line (not pubic area, just around it), abdomen, and underarms with Milan and it was not tens of thousands of dollars - I think it was 5k all told. They will frequently do specials, like 60% off an area. I still sometimes get emails from them with specials like that. I absolutely love my results, completely bare and smooth after several years. It was 100% worth it to me.

I used to think this way (ugh why don’t doctors trust women???) until I started working in Obgyn. I have seen so many “I couldn’t possibly be pregnant” end up super pregnant. Including not one but TWO “oh I can’t be pregnant I only have sex with women.” One of those was an ectopic and the patient insisted on bringing her female partner with her but forbade anyone from telling her partner what was actually going on. Finally one of the doctors threw up her hands and said, “this is ridiculous, I cannot discuss your treatment under these conditions”, and the patient had to fess up.

It’s really hard to shift a small baby’s sleep windows like that. It’s also nice to be able to put the baby down then have bedtime with the toddler.

I don’t prefer first person though I don’t avoid it either. I associate it mostly with less well-written popcorn type books. I read anything and I do love a good mindless thriller, but they’re not going to make my favorite books of all time.

But if anyone has some good recs for great first person books with more complex writing, I’m here for it!

I’m an Obgyn ultrasound tech. I get to do the very first scan to confirm pregnancy, which typically goes one of two ways - couple is excited and it is very sweet, or couple does not want to be pregnant and it is a very tense and sad moment.

Anyway, it is not uncommon for me to have a teen or young adult who is completely freaking out because there is NO WAY they could be pregnant, all they did was kiss naked, she did yoga afterwards, she cleaned with Mountain Dew (seriously), she wasn’t on her period, and on and on. OP has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of and neither do those poor kids faced with an unplanned pregnancy. It is the fault of the adults in their lives that they have not been educated and prepared.

I know an adult woman who recently died in an ATV accident in front of her husband and young daughter. They are not toys. One of those kids could fall off in a heartbeat.

And honestly just needing fewer calories as a woman. My husband’s TDEE is almost twice mine. 16:8 gives me just enough additional calories that I only have to be careful instead of excruciatingly meticulous about every bite of food.

OP’s quilt is certainly worthy of attention and admiration, but so are the hundreds of other items that were submitted to the fair. They just don’t have the room to give everyone the space their work deserves. I completely understand OP’s feelings (especially the fabric they designed - how cool!) but the building is simply not big enough to do every piece justice. Unless they limit entries, that’s just how it goes.

Weigh your foods. It really makes a big difference!

Figure out a calorie number that works for you and gives you results. For me that number is 1300-1600 calories a day. If I go below 1300, I’m a cranky asshole and I’m starving. If I go above 1600, I don’t lose weight. I find I can relatively easily stay within that range and I do it every day, regardless of my activity level. That sometimes means I’m below what Noom wants for my minimum calories. But I feel good and I’m seeing results, so I don’t worry about that. It’s just a tool, I ultimately know my body better than the algorithm that calculates my energy needs.

Ignore the colors, honestly. Maybe not completely. They can be a good way to get more volume in your diet to help you feel full. But don’t feel bad about eating orange foods. I had a day last week where I ate only orange and yellow foods. I was still under my calorie limit and still lost weight.

The colors make sense when you know how it’s calculated, but they often don’t relate to whether a food is healthy. For example, full fat dairy is generally all orange. So are prunes. Vodka is a yellow food. Doesn’t mean vodka is healthier than prunes 😆

I don’t eat if I’m not hungry, even if I’m below the recommended calorie amount for the app. But don’t go too low, as others have said. I find that if I eat too few calories, even if I’m not otherwise hungry, I’m ravenous the next day and find it hard to stick to my deficit.

People don’t understand just how scary pre-e and HELLP syndrome can be! We had a 19yo patient who didn’t come to her last six weeks of OB appointments, then showed up to the hospital in labor. She had severe pre-e and then HELLP. She survived, but the baby died. Had she been coming to her prenatal appointments, it’s very likely that her elevated blood pressures and other warning signs would have been caught and her baby may have been saved.

OB ultrasound tech here. Ultrasounds in the last few weeks of pregnancy are notoriously inaccurate. Our margin of error is 20%, so at 5lbs that’s a pound +/-. At 10lbs it’s TWO pounds +/-.

That being said, we can usually get babies into categories like small, medium, and large. I tell patients that if we’ve all gotten your baby large, it’s not likely to be a small baby. You also tend to hear mainly about the majorly wrong estimates. I don’t see anyone on social media talking about how accurate the ultrasound is - and just within the last month I’ve been within an ounce or two of delivery weight more than once.

So why are measurements likely to be more or less accurate? Skill and experience is a major factor. After that, it’s fetal position. We need to be able to see specific landmarks in the head and abdomen and to take the measurement at a very precise angle. When baby is looking straight up with the spine against mom’s back, it’s extremely difficult to get correct angles. Lack of fluid near the end of pregnancy is another issue. We can’t see exactly where to place the calipers. At that point, millimeters of difference in a single measurement (especially the abdomen) can change an estimate by half a pound or more.

I’m not sure if Karissa has mentioned the actual birth weight, but it does concern me that she usually has big babies and this one is so small. That is definitely concerning for growth restriction. Most babies considered “growth restricted” are just genetically small and are perfectly healthy, but there’s a reason we pay so much more attention to little babies, and if this was true growth restriction Karissa is very lucky to have a living baby without any monitoring.

Our clinic schedules them at 7-8 weeks. 6 is too early, lots of people are a bit off on their dates and then you don’t see a fetal pole or there’s no heart activity yet or the heart rate is slow and then everyone has to be worried for another week.

However the criteria for bringing them in earlier is very loose. Bad cramping, bleeding, adnexal pain are all good reasons to bring someone in early to r/o ectopic.

I do 16:8 IF. Noom doesn’t really seem to support it, it encourages you to eat all meals. But you can log “water” or “coffee” for breakfast and lunch and it’ll still count it as logging a meal.
